Lifthrasil: So, what about it. Can you solve my riddle? Then I'll post a more difficult one. :-)
avatar
zeogold: I'm getting to it, hang on here, buddy boy. I've got 3 people I'm juggling a conversation with in chats and am trying to respond to people in 5 different threads.
The riddle master ... stumped by too many conversations! ;-)

Have you ever played The Silver Seed expansion to Ultima 7 - The Serpent Isle? There is a nice dragon riddle master called 'Stumpy', who plays a riddle game with you.

Never played the Ultima series (outside of trying a game or two a little bit because they were free). RPGs just ain't my thing.

Dessimu: I would have taken you somewhere between 31-65 years old O_P Or 131-165. I think it is the hat. Makes you look older.

Anyway, Happy Birthday, mate!
Thanks!
So, where was it you would've taken me that's 31-65 years old? Is it a restaurant, I hope?

dtgreene: *math*
...calculus is killing me enough as it is. I'm just gonna skip all that and say "42".

zeogold: Or, in short:
A woodchuck would chuck no amount of wood since a woodchuck can't chuck wood.
avatar
GR00T: I prefer the response I first learned:

A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
I knew there was a better response than the one I had posted, this is it! Thanks!

Dessimu: Edit: thing did not work
What were you going to try doing?

Smannesman: I'd love to stomp the self proclaimed 'puzzlemaster'.
"noun: stomp; plural noun: stomps
1.
(in jazz or popular music) a tune or song with a fast tempo and a heavy beat.
a lively dance performed to popular music, involving heavy stamping."

I'd love to do it with you, but I'm a terrible dancer.

Lifthrasil: Well, I don't want any steam. But I can give you a riddle. I have written several for my roleplaying group and just for fun. Let's start with an easy (kind of mathematical) one. (You have to find the number that the question mark stands for)

3 ~ 4 = 1
1 ~ 1 = 4
1 ~ 9 = 5
4 ~ 5 = 1
9 ~ 6 = 2
5 ~ 2 = ?
Interesting. I'm assuming the "~" is some sort of hidden function. Is it safe to assume that the function remains consistent, or at least changes in a consistent pattern?

Actually, neither problem is related to calculus.

The second problem I gave is actually pretty easy and doesn't involve any calculus at all; just elementary arithmetic. No, you do not have to compute the number in full. (Hint: Look for patterns in the last digit.)

Not solving the first problem is understandable because no one has solved it, therefore I do not expect you to.

I know it isn't related to calculus. I was just saying that I've got enough math to deal with already, but alright, I'll take a look at the second one.

It is a consistent pattern and if you figure out what the ~ stands for, you'll soon know the answer of the riddle.
I'm frankly staggered no one's pointed out this so far:

zeogold: I'm not sure when to end the giveaway, so let's just say February 30th.
Neverending fun, huh? ;)
Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon in the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

Read the sentence directly after it.

This joke! Good one! At the mood I am in now, I would invite you to some grand place at night just to sit down at the table and listen to some good jazz.

Not in, thank you. I'll just leave a silly riddle as an homage to the mighty Blaine:

What has four wheels and flies?

Either a garbage truck or Ian Fleming's car.

The former. The latter was Scaramanga's car btw. ;)
