Any art form inherently has politics involved, so as games reached out to larger audiences this was a no-brainer IMO. What I did not predict or expect was that it would cause such a passionate and angry "war" between extremists that would torch so many moderates in the middle with endless fire. I really think the endless gamergate stuff, from BOTH sides, was a reason I stopped gaming for a while.
