Gasp! I'm posting about Steamworks in a GOG forum.

From what I understand, Steamworks is a tool suite and offers DRM as one of its features.

I imagine it would up to the developer to use that option in said tool suite but do most Steamworks titles use this?

Do most of them launch Steam as soon as you click on the game? Are there any Steamworks titles that require no Steam client? (Yes, I have looked at the GOG thread about DRM free Steam games)

I have tried to look for the Answer far and wide. On steam itself as well but I think it might be productive to ask here.
Yes it is. Titles that I know use Steamworks as an argument to remove multiplayer support from GOG release.
Yes, next stupid question.

So you're saying that there are games on GOG that use Steamworks and by using it, the multiplayer is bugged or unplayable?
Pretty much yes. A game can support steamworks, and not require the steam client, but likely some functionality will be disabled without the client. I guess it depends on your definition of DRM-free.

Examples:
According to the list of games that can be played without the steam client, Dungeons of Dreadmor use/support steamworks, and can still be played without the steam client. However, none of the mods installed from steamworks will work without the steam client.

Fez can be run without the steam client, so long as you disable steamworks with the argument --no-steamworks.

Killing Floor can be played single player without the client, but requires steamworks, and the client for multiplayer.

TL/DR: A developer can use steamworks without using CEG, but many of the features of steamworks require the client anyways.

Your farts don't smell. Only other peoples' farts smell.

That's a really great explanation. Thank you, hummer010.
I consider it DRM regardless...

Recently to get Limbo for free (connect) I had to go ahead and add it to my steam library from Humble Bundle. So I figured, sure why not? And went through 7 pages of keys adding them to steam (in case I get future free games... Android Cactus later?).

Anyways... Downloaded a few of them and they require steam while others (Cuthulu saves the world, and Toast Time) don't. Safe to say, any that refuse to work without steam have gone in the trash bin and I've given a 'Not Recommended' review based solely on that. Now that I've gotten 7 more games that don't require steam to run, I've once again deleted the client.

Hopefully, never, ever again.
"Steamworks, Is it DRM?"

This topic, Is it Trolling?

Thank you. I've gotten stuff from Humble Bundle before and that's good to know for anything involving Steamworks. I have done the same thing with DISTRAINT and although, it seems to be a Steam exclusive it runs fine without Steam but I'm curious to whether it indeed uses Steamworks but I'm really happy it runs without the client.

Hmmm. I know to test my games (some of them using RPGMaker) the easiest test is to rename the steam client and see if the game will even run. I suppose disabling the internet too might be another addon test...
