May I ask a question? What information is shared from Steam to SteamGifts during signup? Also, is information continuously shared after that point as well? I'm a little uncomfortable not knowing...

Steamgifts will check your library, your wishlist and your groups.
This operation is made once a week.

The collection of games (not DLC) you have in your account, wishlisted games, list of groups you belong, your avatar picture and account name.

Every week, SteamGifts will sync with your account to keep track of all the new games you currently have and everything else as above mentioned. If you have a private profile, SteamGifts won't let you use the site until you have made your profile public (at least for a moment) to sync with your profile. You can do this manually from the site too, and then change the privacy of your profile if you want.

Azrael360: your avatar picture and account name.
I forget this !
But you can change your Steam or Steamgifts user name independently I believe.

Well, you can change your community name anytime and as much as you like, but it's your account name (the one you can't never change once the account is created on Steam) the name shared.

Ho, yes, true :-)

...thanks to you both.

I'm very wary of any OpenID-type system that shares information, builds comprehensive profiles of my activities, etc.

Well is your Steam profile normally public?

No, I turned everything to private that I could when I signed up and have kept it that way. Why do you ask?

because you need to set your profile to public (at least once a week), it is a steamgift requirement, so everyone can see what games you have to prevent scams.

"Note: We require all registered users to have their Steam game library synced with our site. If your profile is public, this will automatically be done on a regular basis. For those using a private or friends only profile, you'll be able to bring your account up-to-date by briefly switching to a public profile for a few seconds a week. This is done to prevent users from entering giveaways for games which they already own."

Also, steamgifts requires you to own, like $120 in non-bundle games to even use their site :/ no way to check unless they know your library.
