I personally set them up for a week (or a bit more) to give everyone a chance to see them. Setting them for less than a day means that some people won't see them (morning/evening/sleep etc), and not everyone visits the forums every day. Since it is a group (or private) giveaway, thus limited number of entries either way, there's not much benefit to shorter lengths.
But to each his own.

Good point, I'll try setting them a bit longer in future. My first one at two weeks was a bit long though :)

if i need it to be short i try catch some of thurs, fri and the weekend.
