Huge lags, inventory fails to load etc. One would think that by now Valve knows how much strain Steam users put on Steam servers and they would've test their hardware against huge numbers of requests. But no. (
I think the point rather is, why would they bother to spend on extra infrastructure that's only going to be used in the first few hours of the sale. I doubt it hurts the sales.

I would imagine that they have some fancy cloud setup on their backend where they allocate extra servers for times like this.

Oh wait. That's when IT folks do a setup, not their managers.

edit: Oh wait. They had the same problem last year:

I think you're confusing "Never Learn" with "Don't Care"

As already stated, it's only for the first few hours, and it probably doesn't hurt sales at all.

It could be a case of ever increasing demand, though. If they adjust servers according to the last sale, the next one might as well have a simultaneous user increase that's way unexpected.

As someone who came up in supermarkets and did lots and lots of scheduling, some fields do look at past and projected sales.

I guess some fields don't.
Steam sale is better than DDoS attack :)
-When GOG has a sale-

"Ooo a sale, let me check my wishlist to see if anything I want is discounted"
-clicks wishlist, loads almost instantly-
"Oh yes, these 3 games are, I'm gonna buy them"
-Clicks on games, games automatically added to cart-
"That was easy"
-clicks on cart, 30 seconds later all games are brought-

-When Steam has a sale-

"Ooo, it's one of those big Steam Sales today isn't it, let me just open up Steam"
-Clicks Steam Shortcut, nothing happens, click again, still nothing-
"*Sigh* This again"
-Restarts Comp, waits 2 minutes, clicks Steam, Steam opens onto Library-
"It's about time, now let me see what games on my wishlist are on sale"
-Clicks Wishlist, Steam opens up a page from a game previously looked at-
"hmm, that's frustrating"
-Clicks Wishlist, Steam says 'There are no games in the wishlist'-
"*Sigh* This again, I thought they fixed this"
-Clicks Store, Clicks Store again, Clicks the Wishlist Link on the store page, after about 30 seconds of loading it opens-
"Finally, oh wow, these 3 games I want are on sale"
-Clicks First Game, lag, opens up Game Page, Clicks buy, lag, Opens up Cart, Click back to wishlist, more lag-
-Repeat 2 more times-
"Alright now to pay for these"
-click, lag, click, lag-
"Wow, I hope these games were worth all that waiting around"

I mean, surely a company with the resources Valve has is able to make the whole process smoother, it's embarrassing. I'm not even exaggerating the using Steam roleplay, that was me twenty minutes ago trying to buy 3 Total War games.
In these occasions, is only the store side of Steam that is affected, or is the client also borked (and thus one cannot play their DRMed games)?

Just checked. Both :)

Only the store, the client part isn't affected (except visiting the store)

Could the two of you come to an agreement, please? xD

Sales numbers aren't being hurt by the site's poor performance at these times, so why change? "The store lags now? Whoopdiedoo - the customer will wait, or will come back later."

All modules lags. Library is local, so it loads quickly, but I bet you'll face a problem once you leave a game and saves try to sync. Unfortunatelly, I'm not going to try myself, I'm currently enjoying DRM-Free gaming (:

And, everyone knows that during the first few hours of every big Steam sale they have server problems. So, you wait a bit and have no problems at all through the rest of the TWO WEEK LONG SALE.

In addition, you know darn well that GOG has it's share of problems during sales - discount percentages displaying incorrectly, notification emails going out after the sale has ended, etc., etc.

I love GOG or I wouldn't be here, but you're not going to get very far claiming that GOG has fewer technical problems than Valve.
