I don't use Steam. I like GoG. I really appreciate the fact that GoG updates older games so they can be played on newer systems.

No reason a person can't buy from both companies, especially since some newer releases seem to be only on Steam currently.
However prices on Steam are significantly higher than GoG on many games they both offer, which leads me to believe that if I wait, those newer releases will be selling for less on GoG.

How does Steam get away with higher prices? I thought gamers were more savvy.

Please post some examples, I'm interested.

Never seen a game more expensive on Steam compared to GOG. It's often the other way around.

There are many games here that cost more than on Steam.

Here's one:

There are few more. But you're right, it's more often the other way around.

How?
Steam is way larger store , many users don't even care about the price , they just buy games nonstop , even games they won't even play. Ofc steam can get away with high prices easily.

Funny, but for me, Civ IV is at the same price. And the Colonization game is more expensive on GOG by almost 1CDN$ lol


So I guess it all depends on your location... Yeah, people buy games on Steam with their eyes closed, literally. It's insane!

First a general example:
I literally scanned the thousands of titles that Steam offers under $5 and found about 20 that were worth buying.
Since most of Steam's titles are newer, that tells me they are selling titles that were produced cheaply intentionally to make a quick buck. That is a red flag for me. They don't care that they sell crap.
Compared to GoG's titles under $5 which are mostly either older quality titles or sale items. I can find an equal number of titles worth buying amongst a much smaller list on GoG.

A specific example is "Caravan", a title on sale on GoG for $1 which I recently played and is a gem.
Steam still offering it for $10.
My experience having worked retail for years at Tower Records is that sales mostly are generated at the source, the developer and distributer, not at the retail outlet.
So why is Steam not passing on the savings?

Highly unlikely. The other way round is true. Often things are a little bit more expensive on GOG, and you definately don’t get the amount of games. Direct comparison isn’t always possible, as even if steams prices may seem higher in certain circumstances, the amount of key resellers out there selling them for next to nothing, and the number of sales, means it’s completely skewed towards steam end.
GOG games however are often worth more, being drm free.
It’s also not true that gog is the only one making older games available, there is actually quite a few companies doing it, steam included sells old games (although don’t think they actual patch things themselves).

People who care about price don't buy steam games on steam. Just picked up some wonderful Capcom and Konami classics collections for peanuts via Humble in the past month. Would love to have those on GOG but will purchase them where I can, especially if the price is good.

My point exactly and personal proof that Steam is a lesser value than GoG:

I own 1100 games(not previews) on GoG.
I spent $2000 US on GoG.
I never spent more than $15 US on a GoG title, as I wait for sales usually.
I have received 48 free games(not including previews) from GoG during giveaways.
Average price per game equals $2 US.

I would say 200 games I own are quality games which means I spent $10 US on each of these if I discard the other games. This is a good value in my opinion.
Since GoG offers a curated library unlike Steam, I can take a chance on a unknown and still come out ahead.

Not sure what this thread is about. Steam and GOG in the United States have the same pricing. Publishers set the price, not the store. The only time they would be different is in a sale, if the sales are not going on at the same time. The new Leisure Suit Larry for example, which I am waiting on a sale for, is only on sale on Steam at the moment. The base price is the same though, and eventually it will be in a sale here.

They may sell the older games, but they do not update them to run on Win 7 or 10, and as you said they won't patch games like GoG does which is a huge convenience.

Take as example the classic "Betrayal at Krondor", an awesome game everyone should own.

Steam sells it, but has not updated the operating system beyond XP and Vista.
