Hello everyone,

i was just wondering if i can get the install files from steam if i include them in GOG.
Or maybe i misunderstand the whole thing.
Do Steam games always stay with steam but i can play them through GOG, that is what i do now.
But the actual install file i can not get, as it requires the steam program.

Thank you

yes
This is GOG, not Steam. You need the game on Steam and their client to play a Steam game. I guess you can start it from Galaxy if you just have to have several clients open while gaming. You need Steam running in the background.

I am glad I need NO client whatsoever to play my GOG games :-) Actually, GOG never even released it for Linux anyway.

Nice thing about Linux is that we do have a lot of options for client alternates such as MiniGalaxy, Lutris, Gamehub, and a plethora of other community utilities.

Assuming that the game is DRM-free, you can create a shortcut to its exe file, and then start the game from some launcher application using that shortcut, so Steam client running in the background is not necessarily needed.

Why anyone would do that is another question, if running a client isn't a problem as such, then it's just easier to use Steam client to launch Steam games.

True but that applies to a fairly small percentage. Of course, 3% (or whatever the number is) of a huge amount is still quite many games.

That is called DRM, and that's the things that sets GOG, as a store, apart. The install files from GOG are yours to keep. Once you download them and back them up, you don't GOG or any client again (for single-player).

For non-GOG games, Galaxy is simply a launcher. For a Steam game, GOG essentially just launches the Steam client, which in turn installs or launches your Steam game (and GOG can optionally shut down Steam once you exit the game).
Man that is a bummer.

I mean i already payed the game. Not mine.
I am a long time member with GOG but Steam sometimes had good sales. Not an excuse but i actually thought it is mine.

So ok, in order to have the install file i need to get it through GOG.
At least the integration works. I am not that often online in steam anymore and i have some games that are on both platforms. Apparently, these games are not identical which i find sad.

In some respects, i feel cheated. I think i have to be more aware of these kind of things.

Thanks for the explainer. :)

So do you wish you would have bought the GOG version instead of the Steam version, or what?

If so, check the Steam's return policy and whether you are still eligible to it. I don't recall what the rule was in Steam, you have played it for less than 2 hours, or what?

Anyway, depending what Steam game it is, it may be also possible for you to just compress the game install directory, and there you have your portable "installer" for the game that you can play without the Steam client. Depends if the game allows that or not.

I do not understand your problem. You bought the Steam version and got the Steam version. Steam has your money, steam delivers your goods. if you buy a burger at McDonald's, you cannot pick up your burger from Burger King either.

GOG offers offline installers as a special service. if you want this service, you also have to buy from GOG - how else is GOG supposed to survive? And how can GOG get more drm-free games if the big publishers only earn their money with Steam?

Furthermore, I consider that Batman Arkham Series must be released on GOG.

I got over it.

Steam is just so big today.

I shifted to GOG for that reason. Some games i have to rebuy. It kind of sucks, but that is it.
Anyway, i do not care so much about the gaming experience on Steam though it is much better if you want to connect to other friends.

So i got over it and made my peace with it.

Yeah, just switch from one shitty proprietary client to another and then you can be all hipster and say you don’t use steam whilst doing exactly the same.
There's a whole thread about how to get Steam games to work without Steam client.
Not all games work without steam though.

I also moved away from Steam and never look back.
