uchristensen: I have no experience with SteamCMD. Is that able to stand-in for the client itself, when the client goes unsupported?
SteamCMD is not really a client or a client stand-in. It's a command-line tool to download/install/update steam games. Nothing more.

It's very useful for people --- like me --- who don't want to use the steam client at all (I have never installed it), and for people setting up multiplayer servers. Not much use otherwise.

CRILLER3: Win 7 might be as you say "ancient" but for some people it still works and why replace something when it works perfectly fine?.

PixelBoy: The irony here is, for me personally, that I mostly use Windows 10 to play games with, I only use an old laptop to download them with.
It's not a big issue to use some other computer to download, but it is kind of stupid that the download will be the problem, not the actual compatibility.

Anyway, when it comes to ancient OS, I think what this thread has so far completely missed is that Steam client will no longer work with Windows 8 either.
So if you have a system that is three years newer than some Windows 7 computer, it doesn't help at all.

For the record, I use Windows Vista on my Desktop, and it does the job that needs to be done there, so if something isn't broken, there's absolutely no need to fix it.

I wonder if there is some way to run Steam Linux client in some emulator in Windows 7/8?
That might help those who have no access to computers with Windows 10 or 11.
i use win 10 for all my gaming needs but i just love how everything just worked on Win 7, i had more Bluescreen on win 10 than my whole windows history ( 98SE,XP,win 7 and 10 ) for me Win 7 was THE best OS .10 is good havent tried 11 since my laptop cant run it ( says MS :S)
sorry i don't know much about linux OS but when im FORCED to switch OS im gonna try linux or something that has a good gaming support .

Hi, I have a question about this. I'm building a retro PC (if you wanna call it retro) with Windows 7, and I need my Steam library past 2024. SteamCMD can download and validate my games (I mean, without crack needed) in Windows 7? Or will Valve drop support for this app in Windows 7 too?

Currently, SteamCMD works just fine on Windows 7. Nobody can say what the future will bring, but if I were to guess, I wouldn't expect steam to go out of its way to make this tool not work on Windows 7. In other words, I expect it to continue working on Windows 7 for years to come.
