You were talking about this device somehow introducing people (so presumably console gamers) to the "PC variety". What part of that variety is sensibly playable with a controller? Only the genres (if not specific titles) prominent on consoles. No amount of "wah! It's not true" is gonna change that.

I have no idea why you are talking about genres, that was never the topic. The post spoke of PC variety when it comes to games. Now I thought as you were a smart cookie I would not have to explain the volume of releases on PC versus console, which is further divided by platform of choice (that means Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, just in case you're confused again).

I will give you credit for sounding about 900 years old with the 'sensibly playable with a controller?' line and seemingly not understanding the sheer amount of PC only titles that support controller though.

If the reviews come up good, I might actually be interested in this. Using emulators this can perhaps be turned into a single handheld that can play the entire nintendo library of games, which is something I've always wanted. Not sure what pc games I'd want to play on this though apart from platformers. I suppose it will depend on how powerful it is in practice.
But I probably won't get it regardless - can't see the logic in spending money on this instead of saving up for a proper gaming rig. If I somehow had enough money to burn on the other hand...

Main problem this device faces is that Valve doesn't have a good history of supporting hardware.

Steamboxes/SteamPC's were there and gone (I believe that was a licensing thing however the fact remains they didn't last long)

The Steam Controller again was on store shelves for a few months but now is impossible to find.

Even there Linux Client Steam OS most people have forgotten about (there is even another Linux Distro called Gamer OS that many call Steam OS's new successor).


This may end up like there previous projects were only the die hard fanboy's and collectors can get there hands on it, then it's discontinued.

Great volume of games does not in itself constitute "variety". Large number of different genres creates variety. 100 retro inspired platformers is no "variety".

Yes, I know plenty PC games support controllers. I never said or implied otherwise. I only said those are games in the same genres that are already prominent on consoles.

Maybe i'm just old, but you don't remember where we came from... 30lb for a portable system... or even laptops of older times. All things considered 1.5lb isn't that bad.

It's a good looking machine, even better with the docking station. A nice way for people to play PC games without actually having a PC OR a good alternative for playing in your living etc.

Holy crap this is huge for Linux gamers. Full (??!!?) compatibility by launch, and kernel level anti-cheats like BattleYe and EAC working with Proton.

Even if I don't end up buying one, I'll reap the rewards through their work. Hm. If only I didn't dislike Valve so much, I'd give them a big hug.

If Valve can deliver on what this is set out to do, and if the hardware itself (the physical ergonomic, reliability and build quality specifically) is on par with other things in this price range I think we have a winner. It's not quite the same as Sony or MS or a Switch Pro, being that Valve is software first company, but the specs and everything seem great for the device's purpose.

I've been wanting to have a gaming PC for years now, as I'm someone that prefers laptops and MacOS, the only PC gaming I do is in bootcamped windows on my Macbook Pro. The rest of the time I'm on my Switch or Playstation. The Steam Deck is the answer to those like me who never quite believed in a true gaming laptop (I'm not convinced these things are worth the money, ever, or have the reliability and cooling for the stress that gaming puts them through, not to mention build quality never quite meeting my standards), and gave up on building gaming PC's a decade ago. And if the way the GPU hardware shortage continues, I'm pretty convinced I wouldn't be able to even if I did suddenly want to do all that again.

It looks pretty good but it reminds me of the cheap windows tablets about 5 or 6 years ago and the PS Vita both of which could have been put much better use.

The Switch has 2 VR style controllers with touch feedback which bumps the price of the main console up.

I was looking at it but, honestly, is exciting as one month without food.

As someone who has repeatedly stated, "I'd buy a Switch, if only they'd make a sane one that's a box without a screen to hook up and use like a real console.", this is worthless to me. Handheld gaming is an awful experience. (And that's neverminding vile Valve's involvement.)
