For those of you who don't already know, Steam just announced a new handheld called the Steam Deck.

Personally I don't buy many games on Steam (I only have around 40-50) but I might actually considering getting this thing. What makes it so intriguing is that you can still run your GOG games from the device! Any thoughts?

Seems to be pretty good value against laptops in the price range.
Yeah, the possibility of putting some GOG games on one is what caught my eye. Some good old low-end games probably wouldn't drain the battery all that much. Heroes 3 on the go? Sign me up.

The baseline model has a pretty tiny amount of memory for your typical Steam AAA game. I have no idea how fast / slow SD cards are.

I've toyed with the idea of grabbing a switch (I travel a LOT for work) but the ridiculous prices for all of the games has been a turn off. This would circumvent that, even if the initial cost is higher.

I'm not interested in getting one, but I like that they are using SteamOS on it. It will give Valve further motivation to improve Proton (which will be folded back into Wine) and if the device is a success, it could help to boost native Linux adoption by more game developers.

Retail stores tend to have the worst pricing. Digital prices tend to be better, but you always seem to get the best deal on amazon.
I definintely wouldn't be interested in getting one. If I were in the market for a device like that I would just get a Switch, which would provide me something unique to what I already have with my PC / Laptop.

I really don't feel the need to have a gaming device in my possession at all times either. This is just my opinion, and no offense to anyone who's that hardcore with it, but gaming on the go (outside of your mobile) with devices like these I feel is a little obsessive. I firmly believe that you need breaks from even your favorite hobbies.

I can sort of see it if you're a passenger everyday on a long commute. I'm not in that position, but if I was I'd still rather just use my mobile. If I'm going on a trip or something, and I might want a device for some games I got a laptop, or again, the mobile.

Anyways, I think this'll be another hardware flop from Valve. I'm sure the die-hard Valve fanboys will eat it up, but I'd suspect most people will be saying to themselves "what's the point?".
Not gonna lie, the name is not very flattering.
It costs around the same as a switch; USD400 but runs more powerful hardware and more open software. Seems like a winner. Main concerns for me would be playing MP over wifi and gouging / availability issues.
Game hardware doesn't tend to be very profitable so I assume this is just a way for Steam to try and get some of that console audience to make a Steam account.

This seems like a pretty good deal, considering I can't find a new GPU to upgrade to anywhere. Plus the fact that it's like a PC means I can run GOG games off of this, so it's looking like a winner in my book

I don't like handhelds

wonder how easy to repair the controls as they are built into the handheld, and surely they will break

at least the screen is getting to acceptable size, not an everyday device looks too big for that
more like a device you would bring to your travel

yeah probably
I see nothing bad with that, most console games are on pc anyway

Shadowstalker16: gouging / availability issues.
pre-orders will apparently be limited by valid (with spending) steam accounts in good standing.

its linux and proton is a big selling point on this, so yes

Edit: though you should be able to install windows if you prefer (not sure how well that will go with the inbuilt hardware)
