yeah i see the point in getting a nintendo, but pc has so many games the need get a nintendo which is mainly for kids is close to 0

i agree i wouldnt buy steam deck ,nor any other handheld , ebook reader + music is perfectly fine for me
probably some who are way too much into gaming have an use for this, at least you dont need to buy new games for it ,if will be a really open system with proper win games integration

oh yeah as this is a bulky object which you transport i bet it will have plenty of defects and hopefully it will be easy to repair, wonder how good those steam manufacturers/designers

it can use up to 15W/h so it can be hot and discharge quickly 2 hours :O

No, because I think a high end gaming laptop is stupid. The concept of it is flawed. You buy a laptop for portability, but if something has this huge power draw and thermals that don't allow for that portability then what's the point? I still think it's a better option than a Steam deck which will have you tethered to a wall just as much as a "gaming" laptop would...

Steam is dog shit now, and this is coming from someone who like many others has a 16 - 17 year service medal on the platform. Nothing anyone can say will change my mind on that. The platform is garbage and the Steam ecosystem is anything but good for PC gamers.

As rtcvb32 stated, they're more portable compared to notebooks and weigh less too. No point in lugging around double the weight of a Macbook Air 2021 (2.8 lbs / 1.3 kg) compared to this being 1.5 lbs / 0.67 kg. Again, waiting around for benchmarks and performance before I can say anything solid about the product.

TomNuke, I heavily disagree with your "idiots" comment. People who buy in early serve a functional purpose in the marketplace even if the first iteration of any product will have tons of glitches and patches, which many can choose to sell off to recapture salvage value. However, slow adapters of any market benefit immensely from early adopters taking risks with investments / purchases for the privilege of being influencers. We wouldn't have digital distribution if Valve didn't take the risk to make it work. We wouldn't have GOG now if gamedevs, publishers, and early consumers in 2008-2010 didn't buy in.

Probably another one of Steam's misfires, they've never had success as a hardware supplier.
The Steam controller pretty much failed as did Steam Machines (I actually forgot about that last one unti now).
It's also not cheap and I don't think it's something they can keep exclusive like console hardware as it just runs Windows or Linux games so every farmshed in China can poop out something similar for cheaper.

I never said you called me anything, I said you can call me stupid if you want... however, general statement or not we do have rules here and I was just reminding you of that as at mod here. Particularly the rule that says:

- Do not intentionally insult or offend others.

And calling people stupid for exercising their right to buy a product is pushing up to that. As far as Valve and their "poor" history of hardware, I well aware of their history. I also believe they have learned a lot from the failures of the Steam Machines and that this device is much better thought out and positioned in the market then they ever were.

A few of them reasons being Valve is making the hardware this time, which gives devs a standard to test on and develop for. Second, proton is making the vast majority of games playable on Linux so devs do not have to create a native port and there will not be a game shortage like there was with Steam Machines. Third there is a much greater market for a portable PC gaming device then there was for a PC console. Unless SteamOS is buggy and Proton fails to deliver good performance for most games, this will likely succeed. Comparing this to Steam Machines is apples to oranges.

Not sure who you are calling a "fanboy" though I got nearly 700 games here, far more then I do on Steam and have been a diehard GOG users for years... Steam is just doing more interesting things in the gaming market and PC space the CDP or GOG is right now. I also don't see GOG ever making a GOG OS or a GOG Deck or any of the devices with their very tiny market share. This is only going to get worse from competition by Epic and the rise of streaming technology and / or always online games like Flight Simulator. I would prefer DRM free games like anyone but I also realize that GOG is in for a tough battle on that front in the years to come and I also am getting older with less time on my hands, going back to re-play old games is the just not very likely for me so buying DRM Free is just less important to me today. I'd rather save the money and just buy less games and only games that I really want to play, which are mostly on Steam (but not always GOG has it's gems).

True. No company is perfect, GOG has done some "bad" or not so good things as-well. But I believe the good outweighs the bad in my opinion for both companies.

People can be so blinded by their hatred of Valve here that they fail to see a good deal. Valve is losing money on this. If you want you could get the device, install a separate OS, and support other companies when buying software. I preordered the 512GB and I plan on buying a 1TB micro sd card.

It was always a rental. Software is licensed not sold, even on GOG. As far as tying them to an account, I'll give you that, but there also came a lot of arguably good benefits if you look at this with an unbiased view point. There is a trade off with everything. Steam made things standard, and before Steam PC gaming with a little bit like the wild west.

I'm always going to give my honest feelings on something when I post here, and sometimes it might seem a little too blunt, harsh, or even fanboyish. Now, I will always try to not directly insult anyone despite it being so hard sometimes here with the tinfoil haters, the winnie the pooh kids, the DRM-free is dead guy, the GOG users being treated like second class citizens because of missing achievements guy, and the other personalities we have we as regulars. But, again, it being 2021 and all, it's hard as hell to not "offend" someone with just about anything you say.

You are free do what you want man. However, just because you believe you can do whatever, doesn't mean you can. The moderator's as well as GOG staff enforce the rules, and keep the forum a good place for everyone and everyone will abide by that if they want to post here. Posting on the forum is a privilege not a right.

Probably a smart choice, you can think whatever you want about the Steam Deck... however, you can do that in a calm rational way. Instead of saying people are idiots you could have said, "in my opinion making this purchase is not a smart choice" get's the point across without inflammatory statements. You're nitpicking to the point of meaninglessness. If I buy a game on GOG and download it, it can't ever be taken away. In that respect I own it. I can't legally transfer it to someone else, but it's not a rental. If I buy a game on Steam, Valve can remove it at any time by their own actions or by ceasing to exist, and then I can't play it. (Yes, aside from DRM-free games, which are a small minority and can't be guaranteed to stay DRM-free, which I'm sure you're quite aware of.)
