Icinix: Honest question for anyone who has this - the early looks had the lead character as the most unlikable arrogant jerk ever seen in a video game. Like, spectacularly bad, actually did not want to play the game because of it.

Is that still the same, or has the main character actually become someone you don't want to punch through the monitor?
I remember indev when I tried it, I was on some mission and got attacked by pirates or something, I was dogfighting and when I was taking care of the last one I got a message that I was outside some mission area and I need to go back, I had 30 seconds, I had no idea which way to go and the time ran out, I died on the spot and last save was quite far back, that is the day where I quit the game and deleted it from my drive....

I really hope they have improved some of these things in the release, but I am in no hurry to get it and find out.I would hazard a guess that the main character is still a bag of crap though.

chew-ie: Version 1.0 - congrats! But does that mean we finally get capital ships back in the game? Did I miss that announcement somehow?

Or is this still yet another dogfight simulator?
From the v1.0 changelog:
ADDED: Player owned capital ships mechanics

That's just disappointing.
Capital ship adherents are going to ruin SGP3..

Why oh why can't we just get a Freelancer style game for once!

Thanks! Do you happen to have any footage (images/video?) about that? One would think that something so substantial would be advertised a bit more openly o,O

It happens all the time - see Rebel Galaxy II.

I did enjoy Freelancer myself - but in an advanced multiplayer which added capital ships. Which basically was where SG1 took over.

The Starpoint Gemini series is about steering capital ships - to ignore that is a bad way to sell your product. If they'd introduced that as a spinoff (e.g. Starpoint Gemini: Dogfight) it would've been a better way (as in: more transparent). Marking it "3" suggests more of the same - more so as SG2 _did_ improve the core gameplay of SG1.

Can't find anything so far.
While I enjoy Warlords in general, I think combat is very boring. Positioning isn't as important as how good and how many guns you have.

How is SPG3 in this aspect? Does combat gets deeper?

I didn't like the 2D plane broadside combat part of Rebel Galaxy, so I've never played it.
I also can't find a reference to a direct sequel, unless you mean Outlaw?
If so, I assumed it would be similar.
On that part I agree with you, in that sequels shouldn't deviate too much from previous games.
It just adds to the confusion.

I just want ONE game that even tries to approach Freelancer. A game released almost 20(!) years ago.
A STACS's game. A 3D dog-fighting game with quests/mission, trade, upgrades, playable from a third person dynamic chase cam.
I'll keep an eye on this a bit, it could surprise me, but if it has capitals, a lot of stuff has to change in order to accommodate them, which detracts from the whole dog-fighting aspect.

At least there's still Everspace 2..

Like right though? I find myself going back and playing Freelancer more than the newer variations on the 'han solo' sim. genre.

Blows my mind that Freelancer got so much more right than the next two decades worth of attempts which, whilst fun, have often failed in areas easy to reproduce such as the control scheme.

Yep - you're not wrong - the lead character you play is 100% still a bag of crap. The game could be amazing in all other aspects, but just watching others play makes me still want to punch him.

I don't fall into hyperbole much, but in this instance, the lead in the game actually makes the game literally unplayable for me.

ModaL: IIRC, the best strategy is boarding other ships. Once you are able to do that properly it's way easier to get money and to progress in general. That and getting them to stations with a tractor beam and selling them (not sure about this one though - played ages ago)
avatar
toxicTom: That's correct. It's the best way to get better ships and money.
Yeah, tried boarding them to take over ships to do that. maybe the other ships with like 50 crew would be enough to do it with. Just seems like the level difficulty takes a spike.

Then the skills you activate with like a 20 second duration that your class is doesn't seem to really do much. I don't know. I really don't. Needs to be rebalanced a bit. Or i'm just terrible at the game.

I just watched a fellow discord server member stream Everspace 2.
We have our wish come true!

I'm buying that at full price on release here.
GOG, make it so! ,)
I've been testing the In-Dev version during its progress... I can't say _anything_ of the finished game yet...
Except I've just downloaded it and am excited to try it when I have a 5+ hours to sink later today :)
The controls were really good... Having played Freelancer, Starpoint Gemini Warlords, Frontier (Elite 2) etc. I can say this game is unique in the crowd... And there is relaxed, silly humour there... Ah I'm so happy!

Anyway, I'm a space nut so you can make of it what you will :)

The difficulty is all over the place, especially in the beginning. Once you made it past that, it's more smooth sailing.

Get crew members that strenghten your troops and transport capabilites. Also get the best transporter upgrades for your ship.
Then I'd recommend to pick easy fights, with enemy ships about the same size - or one larger, kill all but one of them, shoot it up a little (reduces crew, with luck) and then attempt board. If it works, either keep the ship if it's better/bigger than yours (and you can afford the repairs), or sell it. Do this a few times and you should be able to proceed "normally" with the game. It really gets easier.

Sure. A bit slow this week, but there you go:

First thing comes to mind after a few hours of the full game...
The beginning is very linear, and it takes a good few missions to get out of the whole tutorial feelings...
The game has a bunch of "modes", like the missions where you control an AI-driven robot, so I kinda understand these all need to be introduced thoroughly.
The game certainly has this "you must do this and like it" - the ship for instance will explode if you leave the mission area during the tutorial...
I wasn't a big fan of the robot mission type - but luckily there has only been that one so far - and also it may be partly because I've done that same exact one so many times already when the game was in-dev :D
Perhaps in game proper, the other robot missions will prove more interesting, there is certainly potential.

I haven't explored the other campaign modes, as you can play as a outlaw pirate for instance in a whole different campaign as well, for example, or as Earth Empire hireling or some such... My experience is all about the normal story campaign.
The game has some really silly, low-brow humour at the start, and the first dialogue really gives very little to the player, aside those jokes, while the plot is... well there is almost zero plot at the start.
But after giving the game a chance, the plot does start building slowly...
The main character in the story campaign is a rather selfish youth, no care in the world, no thought for anybody else, and likes to steal things without any remorse...
So yeah, one needs to have a rather fair amount of patience, before the plot actually starts to build around the character and then a bit of depth and some seriousness will enter into the picture.

The gameplay itself, especially the space fights, and flying around... no complaints there... Pretty spot on controls, easy to learn the basics. Not super hardcore tactical. But it gets more tactical when you start making money, and have to choose how to spend it on the ship upgrades. And there seems to be quite a lot of stuff.
I especially enjoyed the variety of missiles and comparing various types of missiles. There are dumbfire/guided and also ranges, damage types etc. Also decent amount of gun stats.
One thing that I'm a tad bit disappointed is the RPG system of the character, at least in the beginning. It seems a bit too simple. But maybe it will open up later on.
The game seems to allow a ton of customization for the ship, you can even combine any part with any other it seems, to allow even more variety for different strategic approaches... But the level-up screen has basically given a point or two to distribute into a few combat related skills (like increase chances for critical hits, or damage of some gun type, or better shields...)
Starpoint Gemini Warlords had a lot more variety for the skills...
But if you don't mind the simple RPG system, the game is quite relaxing, and it is maybe the most immersive space flight experience in modern games I've ever had. It really feels like proper combat in big open space now. Also the battles are not easy. I can certainly appreciate that... You can't just blast your way through them without any concentration... I really had to constantly plan my attacks, switch to different guns and missiles, do evasive manouvers, barrel rolls and quick attacks...
So overall so far I'd give it 9/10... Maybe if the plot gets into epic proportions, I could forgive the RPG liteness even more and push it up to 9.5/10 :)
But anyway, this is not a complete review - just my impressions so far.
