Fantasysci5: Star Trek.
Considering so many of the original episodes were lost, some of the best ones... I can't blame them. I'm not a fan of pre-reboot episodes either. What season are they on now?rampancy: I realize this is more a sample size factor, but the vast majority of Doctor Who fans I've encountered in person aren't really Doctor Who fans so much as they are David Tennant fans; it seems as though they hate on principle anything that wasn't done by/with RTD and Tennant.
Fantasysci5: Yeah, I run into a ton of "Doctor Who" fans, but they've never seen any of the original series before the reboot. I try not to judge, I really do, but I feel they're just jumping on the bandwagon. And I could never say this like I want on my Facebook, or my house would be torched. :P vulchor

Star Trek is better in my opinion. I love both, but Star Trek has over 10 great movies, where as Star Wars only has 3. Star Trek has what seems like close to a thousand episodes spanning seven series over multiple decades, all ranging from enjoyable to fucking awesome. Star Wars has Disney cartoons.
Star Wars has better PC Games, but that's about it.
Also, every Enterprise could whoop ass against Star Wars tech.
Star Wars didn't really do anything to change humanity for the better, except for allow nerds to finally feel kind of cool. Star Trek furthered civil rights for woman and non-caucasian races, tried to open people's minds about other political systems like communism, and presented a very idealistic universe where humanity can over come its vast flaws and work together.
Nice, never saw this fan-made video before. Here's the original music video for those that haven't seen it, or weren't alive in the 80s.

I had a friend years ago who swore by Starwars vs Star Trek. How Star wars would win... until I let him see an episode where this teeny ship fires on Enterprise D with lasers (like starwars) and the bridge crew literally laugh and shrug it off. I remember looking at him saying "Cute..." and him storming off. Geeks can be so much fun sometimes . :D

As long as you KNEEL and OBEY the ways of the federation and their might is right ways. They don't even question themselves and believe they've figured out how to do it BEST, they just KNOW it and push it on everyone else "this way or we'll have nothing to do with you!" I think it was very naive in the idealism it presented and never really touched on any sort of reality or complexity of life (the Maquis is about it.) I agree that it is an idealistic show trying to portray an avenue of progression for our current society, but it is very fabricated and ultimately not-so-great (because they neglect addressing how to actually achieve it) and not realistic (which some might argue "it's sci-fi, why be realistic?", but I think they were actually trying to give an idea of "how it could be.") I still love it, don't get me wrong!
Farscape rules all, btw.

Personally, I prefer Trek vs Wars to be more complicated than that. For example: Trek's vessels moving freely throughout the galaxy, and are relatively slow...while Wars would have ships that are restricted to hyperspace charts but travel very quickly. Federation sensors are much more sophisticated, and they have ready access to teleportation technology. Within the Empire, robots are commonplace and capable of combat, diplomatic functions, repair, and a multitude of other uses. There is a potentially epic exercise in asymmetrical warfare, waiting to be told...

I like both but prefer Star Trek because the Trek universe has more content (TV/Movies/Books) into which one can sink their teeth. There is just more going on, although Disney may change that for better or worse--hopefully better...

I saw a few, but they didn't really grab me the way Christopher Eccleston's series grabbed me. Highly possible that there are quite a few older episodes I'd enjoy, but it's such a large body of work that it would be work to find them. I'm sure that just being old would make the episodes less attractive to me (not because of age per-se, but because cinematography was different in the 60's and 70's; I enjoyed that at the time, but less so now). The reason I mention David Tennant is that these series simply nailed what I enjoyed about Doctor Who. I enjoyed much of the rest, but it was more hit and miss, IMO.

I did not read enough Star Trek to comment about it.
As for star wars The first trilogy are quite interesting, but the 20 or so titles after it is just average, recycle concepts of stereotype black and white. Nothing different than other B-rated movie or books
Then come traitor. Suddenly the Dark Side may not be evil after all. It may be just a misconception of the Jedi. Instead of black and white, there are grey area to be challenge upon. The force does not have a side, only humans do.
After a few novels, it comes back to the boring stereotype black and white thingy. If you are not good, you are bad, and have a loose interpretation of good.

Star Wars. Love the combination of mythic elements (The Chosen One, The Old Mentor, etc.) and modern elements (spaceships, aliens, etc).

When it comes to games, SW is the clear winner. So many memorable titles (TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, KOTOR...)
When it comes to TV series, it's of course ST, that strange animated series just doesn't click with me.
When it comes to movies... It's a tie I guess. Both have their share of great (Ep 5, ST 2+6) and abysmal (Ep 1+2, ST 5) titles.

darthspudius: Actually if you keep an eye out through out TNG, DS9 and the movies there is a lot of subtle sub plots etc that hint that the federation aren't all goody goody. Especially with the likes of Odo and the Klingons. Racism and genocide.
DS9 was a bit of a disappointment (less so than Voyager). There were some interesting battles, and a few interesting characters, but the bjorans were dreadful, Odo I found incredibly annoying, and the end few episodes were a joke. Shame as it did have some good bits. As for distant dystopian future, Andromeda was hilarious, so overly camp and cliche'd. Personally I would like to see a dark future of the federation in more Blade Runner style

That depends on what ship we are talking about. I mean a super start destroyer would just swallow enterprise, although in fairness you could just wait for some turbulence and all the computers on enterprise would explode :o) +1 to that. Great series.
All the other mentions are also very good - B5, Andromeda, Crusade , Firefly etc.
Hence why the original question is void. We are spoiled with great SciFi!

Ah yes, the question that never dies. (Personally, I prefer ST, but they're so fundamentally different that there's hardly any merit in comparing the two.) Of course, with JJ Abrams now doing both, they may merge to become one and the same... Which might put this question to rest, at last!
