While Edward James Olmos certainly made BSG for me, he was backed up by an excellent cast of actors; the only rough point for me was Jamie Bamber's Lee/Apollo, but that's more the fault of him just being written as a bit of a pansy (IMO), and even he had some great moments during the show's run.

Between BSG, B5, Farscape, Firefly and some other really awesome shows like Space: Above and Beyond (anyone remember that show?) and Farscape, I realize now what a great period of time the mid-1990's-early-2000's were for space-based sci-fi on TV.

That's true, but mostly because the rest of the cast was just horrendous. Baltar and that fanservice imaginary blonde are the stuff of nightmares, and they're still not as bad as Starbuck. >shivers<

Well I'm split. I like both.

Star Wars has the coolest bad guys and offers three great movies to see. It also offers books that cover both the good guys as well as the bad, so you have plenty of options here.

TNG and Voyager are among my favourite series, they have a good sense of adventure and exploration, I really like the characters as well, however I don't like any of the Star Trek movies. The books are also more limited in scope.

I don't know what you're used to watching or WHAT is going on in your head, but, his acting in BSG is absolutely atrocious, as is everyone else's in that show. It's a clusterfuck of the worst writing being horribly directed into some terrible acting producing some of the worst TV ever. I thought there would be sometihng redeeming in the show with his acting abilities in it, but apparently he was just looking for a paycheck and was completely uninspired by the role. It's SO bad it's painful, and that includes his acting.

The more I watch TNG, the less great it has become. A lot of it just doesn't hold up, it's really disappointing. Sure there are some great episodes and I still love it, but it is far from the greatness that I once thought it was. TOS, however, holds up wonderfully, and DS9 gets better every time.

My opinion is, his acting was great. Not saying yours is wrong. You could think it really is shitty. I don't think it is. It was great drama and awesome acting.

The more I watch of TNG the more I see it help to lay the groundwork for our current politically correct climate. Someone on the show would criticize Tasha Yar's decision at tactical, and Picard would proceed to give a 20 minute lecture on the needs for space equality and the importance of 20th century labor movements. Good show, but it gets preachy and often drowns in the meta concepts of alien interpersonal BS. I'm surprised they didn't end every show with a group hug on Counselor Troi's couch.

Much more PC than the Alpha bro that was Kirk, who phaser phucked every green skinned alien woman in the universe.

They were great characters in their own right, but together they had a wonderful dynamic that made them even better. Also, Voyager has two great accomplishments in the character department- the eye candy character ias actually one of the best acted and most interesting on the show, with by far the best character arc, and they have, in the later seasons, a kid character (Naomi Wildman) who is actually likeable, well acted, and actually enriches the series by interacting with the adults.

Not to mention the children Borg that come along for the ride in the later episodes, I've grown quite fond of Etcheb.

In my opinion Voyager is slightly more efficient, tighter and more advanced Next Generation, if only by a little bit, as much as I love Pickard and Data. The sets are nicer and it's just all round a little bit quicker and even more well put together. Each little hour episode is as fast and involving as the best films, a feat for a television show. I think it's the years and years of experience behind all three previous Star Treks make it a well oiled machine.

For the people in this thread that have not yet tried Star Trek, try Voyager. It's seven seasons of Borg perfection.
