May the 4th come to GOG.com!

Star Wars Day™ is near, a time when the world comes together to celebrate the long, long history of a galaxy far, far away. And so it is, once again we combine forces with Lucasfilm and Disney to join in on upcoming May the 4th celebrations the way we know best: with new releases, a classic Digital Premiere, and peecha chakka no wookie boonowa tweepi Saleo. Ho, ho, ho, hooo.

What do we have in store this week?

-- Star Wars: Rebel Assault I & II - a new digital premiere. The famous live-action, FMV rail shooter returns - blast through the ranks of the Galactic Empire, revisit familiar movie locations, and experience the rebel assault. Both of the classic titles come in one DRM-free package for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux!

-- Collector's CD-ROM editions of: Star Wars™ X-Wing and Star Wars™ TIE-Fighter. The space-flight simulators finally become complete exclusively on GOG.com. The Collectors Edition, often considered the absolute re-release, combines upgraded graphics with the classic MUSE sound system, and a refined flight engine. It's a free upgrade to all of you that own it, and comes with every new purchase as well.

-- Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast and Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy now on GOG.com. Are these the best lightsaber swingin', force-pushin' simulators ever made? Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

-- Two big bundles, with every remaining Star Wars™ game on GOG.com:
Blaster Bundle - with 7 titles including the upgraded Star Wars X-Wing & TIE-Fighter series, and more Lucasfilm games brought back into the digital world from old CDs and dusty floppy disks.
Saber Bundle - with 10 games at a flat 77% off, including Star Wars Battlefront II, Knights of the Old Republic I & II, the two Dark Forces games, and our two new completely new releases: Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast & Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.

Grab your blaster, wield your saber, and celebrate the days counting down to May the 4th with us! The entire shebang will last until Thursday, May 7, 6:59 AM GMT.

Khalaq: Better prices than Steam sale? Check.
Not necessarily; Steam has a Star Wars Collection 2015 bundle for more or less the same price than the Saber bundle, and it includes all of the Saber bundle games plus the two Forced Unleashed games that aren't on GOG yet and The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, so you get more games in general and also including more recent games for the same price.

The advantage the GOG bundle has over the Steam one is DRM-free installers and guaranteed Win Vista/7/8 compatibility for all games though.
avatar
BrandeX: GOG aren't stupid, those packs are specfically divided."Saber Bundle" is the "can buy cheaper elsewhere bundled and frequent sales, if you really wanted to" pack.

"Blaster Bundle" is the "Fairly recent GOG digital exclusive games you can't get anywhere else legally even if you tried" pack.

You can see then why Blaster has less of a discount % than Saber.
avatar
Matruchus: Not quite true. Only Rebellion, Roque Sguadron and Galactic Battlegrounds are gog exclusives in the Blaster bundle. Tie and X-Wing games are available on Steam since Star Wars day.
The X-wing series was added to Steam's store after my post.
avatar
mothwentbad: Wow, that's really dumb and meaningless. You can't get anything 50% off a la carte. It's either X% individually, or 37% of the whole. There is no 50% off any individual item in any meaningful sense. It's the dumbest marketing I've seen in a while.
avatar
Konrad: Sorry about the confusion. We wrote "up to 50%" because several of the games are 50% off when you get the whole bundle. We picked the highest discount, since there is no flat %-off across the whole bundle for us to list. Your discount might not be 37% if you already own some of the games, or it might even be 50% if you own everything but select titles. It's kind of a tough nut to communicate.

Anyway, we got rid of the percentages on the front page, and the Newspost won't mention the weird discount either. That should be a lot less misleading, and the promo page will speak for itself. ;)
Oh, that actually makes sense. I'm so used to deals where you get X% off if you buy everything you don't already have. I didn't think about the case where you have some items but not others but the discount isn't across-the-board.

EDIT: Sorry if I was a little over the top. I was totally confused. Maybe just a little annoyed, but not actually mad, but that probably didn't come through either.

EDIT 2: I think what really threw me off was an earlier sale, like a year or two ago, where buying or already owning X games gets you the next across-the-board discount tier. 10% off one game, 20% off two, etc. I automatically interpreted "up to 50% off" in this way.

Hello GOG, I love that you are doing this for May 4th. I mean the last two Jedi Knight games, the Collector's CD versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, Rebel Assault 1 and 2 and two bundles of Star Wars games (The Saber bundle & Blaster bundle) is just incredible. However, I've just gotta ask, on behalf of Star Wars fans everywhere... Where's Shadows of the Empire?

In case you don't know, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was a multimedia event that explored the events before Return of the Jedi. It mainly consisted of a book, a comic, and a video game for Nintendo 64 and PC. All told the same story (A plot to assassinate Luke Skywalker), but from different perspectives: The book revolved around the characters we all know and love, The comic told the plot from the perspective of Iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett, and the game told it from the perspective of Dash Rendar, a new character who was a minor character in the book and had him try to stop the assassination plot. The event proved to be a huge success and spawned two later followup events: Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. On top of that, Shadows also garnered a Soundtrack composed by Joel McNeely (I don't know if I spelled his name right or not) and several toys by Kenner.

While it would definitely be a major stretch to include the toys, (that was a joke, you can't distribute toys on a digital distribution platform.) It would be awesome if you re-released the PC version of Shadows of the Empire, as the game itself is regarded as one of the best Star Wars games ever, and, since all three tell the same tale why don't you throw in digital versions of the book and the comics as extras that come with the game? And maybe throw in the soundtrack by Joel McNeely too while your at it?

Believe me, I'm not an insane fanboy, all I'm saying is that this is an important piece of Star Wars history and that it would be perfect if you put it on GOG.com so that more fans can experience it and, in turn, allowing newcomers to discover a legendary expanded universe tale that has successfully earned its reputation.
Thanks for reading.

NOTE: This was written by Ben Bell, Tim Bell's son, someone who loves Star Wars and the second user of this account. Don't worry, I only use it for installing games, as My father purchases the games and sometimes installs and plays the games themselves.

hurvl: But I already got all the Star Wars games from The Star Wars Humble Bundle, although I haven't tried any of them yet. So you see, your little sale is no match for the power of the Backlog!

Still, it has plenty of nice deals for other people.

Darth Vader: If you only knew the power of the GoG sale.
The Emperor: And now, young Skywallet, you will die!
avatar
JudasIscariot: You don't have the Collector's Editions CD-ROMs for X-Wing and TIE Fighter in the Humble versions though :P
No, but I don't care about those games. I only like the FPS/RPG games and together with my old retail versions and the Humble Bundle, I now have all Star Wars games I'm interested in (well, except for Battlefront 1, because no one in the known universe wants to sell that).

Good. Use your aggressive feelings. Let the hate flow through you.

The humor is a tad twisted at times and might not be for everyone. But the reviews themselves are pretty good.

Haven't seen these yet, thanks. Funny stuff.

avatar
opticq: Well graphics and gameplay, some of the reviews say the game play is outdated.
avatar
IwubCheeze: Considering the games are FPSs and the genre hasn't really changed much (eg. Shooting your way to the end of linear levels), wonder where the "outdated" part comes in. Call of Duty doesn't get called outdated for being corridor shooters.
Granted, I haven't played many FPS for a while and what I say is anecdotal, but I think a big part of it is a lot of the older ones had you roaming around a lot. Looking for a key, looking for a door, maybe even going back to the beginning of the stage to find the elevator that didn't work until you pulled a lever somewhere. Whereas, today, you're constantly moving forward. Rarely backwards.

Having said that, it could just be the reviewers find it pixelated and not "realistic" enough. Therefore bad.

Finally decided to buy Dark Forces 2 cause its at an affordable price. Damn the game is really good. Totally forgot the adrenaline rush you get from the blaster fire. Empire at War though will wait till it gets down to a normal singular game discount price.

Leroux: The advantage the GOG bundle has over the Steam one is DRM-free installers and guaranteed Win Vista/7/8 compatibility for all games though.
Yeah. I *almost* bought the Steam Bundle but then read the comments in their community section and everyone is saying that KOTOR and the other games are crashing because Steam didn't upgrade them to work for Windows 7 and 8. Good thing I did a minute of looking into the Steam deals before wasting my money.
Although not an official GoG streamer, I will also be streaming in the spirit of Star Wars Day and the awesome bundles. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (that's right, all the way retro), scheduled for tonight at 7 pm CST / 0000 GMT, so as not to interfere with GoG's scheduled Star Wars streams. Come out and see the sequal to Dark Forces and the start of the Jedi Knight saga. twitch.tv/lofweir

waluigi: By the way - I would like to ask about X-Wing/Tie Fighter series. Don't have any joystick (and probably won't have), I've tried in the past some of the flying simulators, but they were too complicated for me. Is there any sense to buy any of these games? They look quite nice, but if they're too complicated, I think that I should rather stick to games like Rogue Squadron or Starfighter.
I think you would classify them as hard. I never played sims though, but they are definately not arcade.
I suspect that Shadows Of The Empire will be in the next bloc of GOG Star Wars releases, along with Pod Racer.
After that you are into the less highly regarded SW games.(Force Commander, the Phantom Menace, etc).I suspect that every Star Wars PC game will be available (except for maybe the ill fated Star Wars"Galaxies) and maybe a few ports.

I would be gobsmacked if Shadows of the Empire is not in the next batch of Star Wars games.

So, I bought the blaster bundle no problem, since I wanted everything in it, but looking at the saber bundle, if I un-select a couple of the games I don't want, the price more than doubles. I guess I shouldn't be complaining that I get more games OR ELSE, since that doesn't really hurt me, but it seems kind of weird.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it should be possible to buy the bundle as a gift to yourself and then redeem only the games you want, so that you can give the others away or trade them in for something else? (Too late for you now though. EDIT: Or not?)

You are correct in what you are saying about how bundles work, but why is it too late for him? He bought the Blaster bundle, because he wanted everything in it and now he's pondering about the Saber bundle. I don't see any indication that he definitely bought it.
