May the 4th come to GOG.com!

Star Wars Day™ is near, a time when the world comes together to celebrate the long, long history of a galaxy far, far away. And so it is, once again we combine forces with Lucasfilm and Disney to join in on upcoming May the 4th celebrations the way we know best: with new releases, a classic Digital Premiere, and peecha chakka no wookie boonowa tweepi Saleo. Ho, ho, ho, hooo.

What do we have in store this week?

-- Star Wars: Rebel Assault I & II - a new digital premiere. The famous live-action, FMV rail shooter returns - blast through the ranks of the Galactic Empire, revisit familiar movie locations, and experience the rebel assault. Both of the classic titles come in one DRM-free package for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux!

-- Collector's CD-ROM editions of: Star Wars™ X-Wing and Star Wars™ TIE-Fighter. The space-flight simulators finally become complete exclusively on GOG.com. The Collectors Edition, often considered the absolute re-release, combines upgraded graphics with the classic MUSE sound system, and a refined flight engine. It's a free upgrade to all of you that own it, and comes with every new purchase as well.

-- Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast and Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy now on GOG.com. Are these the best lightsaber swingin', force-pushin' simulators ever made? Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

-- Two big bundles, with every remaining Star Wars™ game on GOG.com:
Blaster Bundle - with 7 titles including the upgraded Star Wars X-Wing & TIE-Fighter series, and more Lucasfilm games brought back into the digital world from old CDs and dusty floppy disks.
Saber Bundle - with 10 games at a flat 77% off, including Star Wars Battlefront II, Knights of the Old Republic I & II, the two Dark Forces games, and our two new completely new releases: Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast & Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.

Eumismo: I recommend you to watch the movies in chronological order, beginning with Episode I and finishing with VI. I really love how the story is told along the six: it's just one story separated in six chapters. This is also how George Lucas intended them to be viewed. I think most of the hatred for the prequels is driven by nostalgia, because a lot of people watched the originals as a kid. But all people I know who watched the whole saga for the first time in chronological order really love them all and can't understand why people hate so much the new ones. I even like them more than the originals because I find them much more complex and with a more interesting plot overall.

Wathever the order of viewing you choose, you shouldn't skip Episode I because it has many interesting plot points. Some of them are not obvious the first time you watch it, but when you watch it again after knowing all the story you will probably notice them (and the same thing happens with episode II). I think you souldn't watch the saga in this order: IV-V-VI-I-II-III, because the whole story will seem anticlimathic. That machete order some people recommend (IV-V-I-II-III-VI) is better than that, but the best one for a newcomer, as I already told you, is I-II-III-IV-V-VI. Whatever one you choose, I wish you enjoy them :).

jalister: 1,2,3 just are not good. Actually some of what bothers me about 1, 2, and 3 can be seen in 6. From the ridiculous deaths of Boba Fett and Darth Maul to the silliness of the Ewoks and Jar Jar. I know Boba Fett and Darth Maul are not actually dead according to Lucas, but that was not the intended outcome when we originally saw the movies. I also felt several of the characters were miscast in 1,2,3. I did not feel like anyone was miscast in 4,5,6. I just recently finished watching all 6 seasons of The Clones Wars. I found those to be quite good, so I wouldn't say my dislike for 1,2,3 were nostalgia for 4,5,6.
2 is painful to watch. When watching it as a family, I try to get through it by mimicking the love story lines from Anakin to my wife and amusing the kids. The lines are so bad that's almost impossible to not laugh at them, especially when repeated aloud.

Today is a Good day indeed!

Thanks Disney and GOG!

Fesin: That shouldn't be too difficult.
If you do, it would be awesome if you could try out the "Machete order": Episode IV -> Episode V -> Episode II -> Episode III -> Episode VI
That's supposedly the best way to watch the series, and I always want to know what people who never saw Star Wars think about it.

Zeeaire: It's harder than you would expect^^
Why is it called like that? Thanks for the tip, always wondered about the right order to begin with. First thing you read when searching for it is something like IV, V, VI, I, II, III.
Never stumbled upon such a confusing way to look a movie series before :o
Maybe I can give a feedback when the long awaited time has come^^
I suggest a simplification.

Watch IV, V and VI. That's all. And whenever they mention the past, just imagine it based on what they say. Not only the prequels are godawful, but they don't even fit the story anyway.

Erm, nope. Not at all. Tech and special effect-wise the prequel trilogy is great; everything else about it is complete garbage.

I actually did rewatch all of them very recently: the original trilogy after the first batch of SW games came to GOG and the prequels after that. The latter of which I did to satisfy my curiosity mainly because I hadn't watched those since they were originally released in theaters.

And guess what! They're still ass. Sure, I see how fucking cheesy some of that stuff in the original trilogy was, and I do get some of the hate for the Ewoks, but, honestly, they provide for some good comic relief so it ain't all bad. The prequels, on the other hand, are still as bad as they ever were thanks to a really dumb script, character progression, and some of the most wooden acting this side of Plan 9 From Outer Space. Nostalgia has no effect on this whole thing as bad movies will always remain bad. Hell those Star Trek reboots were in all rights better flicks than the prequels.

Which leads me to the new movie, whose quality already looks miles above the prequels even from only those few snippets that have been revealed thus far. JJ Abrams may have been a curious choice as the director, but it doesn't take much to beat the crap Lucas has come up with.

I still can't forgive him for replacing David Prowse with that emotionless Hayden Christensen in the dvd 'special editions' simply because it also doesn't make any fucking sense to have done that. You see Yoda and Obi-Wan appear at the age they died, yet suddenly Anakin shows up now as his younger self. I mean, what the fuck Lucas? I'm seriously glad he sold all his rights so he can't fuck with the movies anymore.

If you want to stay competitive with Steam or HumbleBundle I'm afraid you'll have to do a lot better. Up to 37% off, if you buy the whole 7 games, out of which some are over 10 years old, barely qualifies as an offer. No DRM is awesome but seeing prices consistently more expensive, for games considerably older, kind of negates the benefit. Right now Steam has a 70% discount for some of their (unbundled) StarWars games (but fewer titles).

For this kind of nearly "abandonware" bundles, either do dirt cheap prices (just check the Heroes bundles on HB right now) or at least unbundle the games with a 50% individual discount (which would still be worse than on Steam).

I'm not interested in any of these games except Rebellion and maybe Battlegrounds (which I both already have, stashed somewhere in an old box), even though I'll probably never play them again. But I might still get them for a good price. :)

You missed it in my post, I know he is not dead. I've read the novels, which is not canon. However, I also saw Lucas stated that Boba Fett is not dead.

I was originally going to say something similar. I've already told my son that there are only 3 Star Wars movies.

Steam's discounts and GOG's are quite comparable. GOG also has a 77% off bundle, like but not identical to Steam's. GOG's 37% off bundle is like but not identical to Steam's X-Wing Bundle, which is 32% off. Neither store has complete access to the same games that the other does, so, yeah, the bundles will vary. All told, though, it's very similar.

Over time when both stores have access to the same exact titles, it would not surprise me if sales were identical between the two stores.

Truth is gog very rarely gives a good discount (at most 50% if that) for games outside of bundles. So if you are not a games collector then you are definitely better served on Steam price wise for separate games which have the same discount in bundles and as separate games on Steam. Gog unfortunately has specialized itself on bundle sales only.

When you think about it, both of Steam's big Star Wars deals are bundles as well, and unlike GOG, Steam does not give you credit for games you already own. The Steam deals are great, but more-so only under specific circumstances.
There aren't enough highfives in the world.

Yeah but the problem is if I wan't to buy Star Wars: Empire at War which I wanted to buy I have to pay 9.49€ separate but bundled it costs 4.79€. On Steam it costs always the same (the same discount) be it in a bundle or separate which is 5.99€. Unfortunately im not a collector so I have to always pay higher price on gog which means I always pass this kind of sale. Will probably have to wait a couple of years till I can get Empire at War here at a for me affordable price.

Sounds suspiciously like saying his dad is dead, and brushing off questions years afterwards with some "well, i meant it symbolically".

I'm sorry, No I didn't miss it but I am weary of Disney and I thought that is what you might be implying, that because of Disney he is going to actually be dead. My bad on that one. :D
We've made front page on Slickdeals. Yeah!

Someone asked if the Jedi Knight games still playable online?

That's not 100% accurate. Yes, it is cheaper separately, but it's not the same price as if you bought it in a bundle. Steam just isn't showing you the price each item is when bundled. They're showing you a list of the individual prices then at the bottom telling you what the price would be if you bought them in the bundle. The price individually for each game is 70% off, but the price all bundled together is 84% off of the regular retail prices of each game combined. Eliminating the bundle actually changes the price of Empire At War (in dollars) from around $3.20 to $5.99.

GOG provides you a lot more information about your purchase, which can both help them and hurt them. However, they give you credit for the games you already own and calculate your total discount on the fly. Steam just tells you: Buy the whole thing and if you already own some, well, sorry, sucks to be you.

Steam's bundle is a little sketchy too though. They've listed the Mysteries of the Sith expansion for JK: DF2 as a separate game in the bundle and are charging extra for it, while it comes with the base game on GOG at no extra cost. They've also placed Clone Wars: Republic Heroes in the bundle which, well, sucks, bad... Want the bundle price, well, you've got to pay for one of the worst SW games ever.
