Kamamura: Ad Zork - here you go, friend:

eiii: Thank you! After trying out these zorks I'll see if I still can stand text only games and buy the pack with the other 3 on the next sale or not. Reminds me on the old Wumpus.
Here is the Plotkin's archive:

Try especially Spider and the Web, it's actually stunning, cleverly narrated espionage story, I remember being amazed by it ten years ago.

Ixamyakxim: So, how we all doing? How are things moving along / everyone getting their wants of choice?
avatar
Stilton: Nice of you to ask, my friend. The simple and pleasing answer is yes! I have everything I wanted. A good feeling. I'm just loitering now and enjoying the company of fellow game-heads. How about yourself?
Pretty much doing the same. Popping in and out now that things have started to slow down a bit but yes I have to admit just loitering about chatting about who likes which games and such is a lot of the fun of this!
avatar
IAmSinistar: Have you ever had Kunafa? I had it made by an Egyptian family and, oh man, heaven!
avatar
ahmedshaltout: Lol I never thought I'll randomly see our culture discussed in a video game forum
We are a broad and complex community, prone to discussing just about anything. :)

lol yeah I've been here for days now, if this had been a normal sale I'd have totally ignored it :)

Yeshu: That's the point of the game. It's like a cold winter dream. It's not about crazy, whimsical adventures ala Monkey Island. It's a journey of a person following his/hers dream no matter how ridiculous it might be. At times it's really surreal but still comprehensible.

If you can't slow down, you wont enjoy the game.

Also, i detect allot of negativity towards the female protagonist. Her being "cute" was never a selling point of the game.

Kamamura: I don't require my adventures to be whimsical and crazy. Blackwell is neither whimsical nor crazy, nor is Dreamweb and Gemini Rue.

However, I need the plot to be strong and interesting on its own, and in that regard, Syberia fails utterly. My suspicion is that the author, being some kind of painter, depended on visuals too much.

As to the protagonist, my negativity is not aimed against her (she is not a real person, after all), but at a clever and somewhat cynical tactics of the game designers who realized, after stunning success of Lara Croft, that a typical gamer of the time is a somewhat lonely geek, so offering him a sort of surrogate relation with the protagonist works very well (the player guides and cares for the protagonist, hence a sort of relationship develops). I don't care for that.

Blackwell series have female protagonists too, but do not depend on this cheap trick.
Sorry, but by your logic ANY female character is only female to get lonely male nerds attention.
Also you come to allot of conclusions without any actual evidence. It's borderline conspiration theory territory.

The plot is simple, but it is not meant to be complex or confusing. You learn about an old mans dream and go on a journey to make that dream come true.

Again, it's not a game for everybody and you don't have to make up some bs theory's about the developers trying to draw in horny gamers with a female character to justify you not liking it.
It's not in your taste, that's it.
Dang. Just slept for 4 hours and didn't miss a title. I was figuring I'd miss at least two or three.
Have to run out to the store before the rains start here. Both of the people I was doing game watches for are here, so they should be covered. I had passive watches on for Long Live The Queen and the QFG games, but those aren't critical if I miss them. Just ones I was going to add to the "gift later" pile. :)

See you all in a bit!
Phew, finally up to date with the thread, thats harder than keeping up with the sale you chatty bunch.

Which ones are you waiting for?

Heh. I just woke up to the one after the one I was looking for after waiting for 2 days.

For long stretches of time, the thread IS more interesting than the sale! :-)

Oh my ... lots of games :), if I wouldn't have already enough of them in my backlog.
We urgently need a shop which also sells the time to play the games. :P

Phlegm: Did anyone get any free games during this promo?
I havent seen any so far.
avatar
omegaunit: I got Wasteland free, pretty much everyone seemed to get Dragon Commander free
I tried for Dragon Commander but didn't get it. I've had three free games - Carmageddon 2, Bard's Tale and Trine 2. The last two I already owned, so I have pressies to give away after the sale is over. :-)

Kamamura: Moreover, if you are into the interactive fiction (text-based), know that the genre is alive till today, that much improved version of the original zcode language called Inform still exists, and there is even an annual competition. Onwards to the archives:

http://ifarchive.org/

I especially recommend games from Andrew Plotkin, like:

Tangle in the Web
So Far
Hunter in the Dark
Change in the Weather

or others - Photophobia, Galatea

Be warned that they are not the usual puzzle drags, but true, modern and deep interactive stories. The parser is also very advanced.

Finally, if you feel creative, you can try to use Inform to write your own, the IDE is free to use, but it's not an easy task.
Thanks K interesting stuff beside the usual gaming dish,
especially when someone likes storys, reading books...
For the people out there:
the things with storys and no graphics, works also without
need of electricity, made of wood...;-)
