I crawled out of bed a little while ago and unsurprisingly my first impulse was to reach for the laptop and see what was happening in the land of GOG. (Pavlov and dogs come to mind...)
Its giving me a warm feeling seeing the energy, though slightly diminished, is still here. The humour and help is coming through still. The reminiscing has started and that's a good thing - we don't want to let the last week dwindle just yet, although I personally think it'll take an atom bomb to do that.
Who knows, maybe this thread will morph (good word, like sneezing with a mouth full of food) into the Summer Insomnia Sale, if there is one, and maybe even all the Insomnias after that. Now wouldn't that be something... GOG would have to set up another server just for us and the growing number of warm bodies it would attract.
I've been investigating the games I acquired and somehow, having got them through this process we are continuing to keep alive, they feel that bit more pleasurable than if I had purchased them in the usual way of things.
Now for some breakfast (at 11:40 in the 'morning'). That sale certainly has a lot to answer for...
Fromage d'Viking... Now that sounds pretty damn good.
Although just plain Stinky works just as well ;)

IAmSinistar: Agree heartily with this, and really your whole post. (You sucked too, ya big stinky wedge of fromage d'Viking.)
Hey, IAmSinistar, thanks for the new nickname! Fromage d'Viking... Now that sounds pretty damn good.

donsanderson: We are truly OT now but this thread has a long way to go to catch up to the 36525 posts in the Fall One. (And it's STILL growing) ;)
A true 'walkabout' is about the coolest (grooviest ;) ) thing a hippie could ever do.
After stepping on my 2nd 'pull tab' from the old style beer cans I decided shoes were the way to go, they were American Indian moccasins so were pretty awesome. I hate getting stitches.
I could walk on almost any terrain barefoot and glass wouldn't penetrate the callouses. However getting an ironbark splinter pierce one of those callouses was pretty painful. Since they were so thick, I almost passed out from trying to pull it out. Walking barefoot taught me to watch where I was going, something I am in need of. On another matter, I've gotten a bit disheartened by certain events on the site so am going to have some rest time from it to recover from so little sleep. I was under the assumption that some of the more experienced and knowledgable forum members were sensible about giveaways and instead they support these people by falling for bullshit stories. I can easily find tons of evidence but what is the point of me pointing this out when other long term members just keep supporting them?
So on that "cheery note", I'm off til this settles in my mind and I can focus on the positives I intended to and mentioned earlier in the thread.
txnca: So, in the end, I do not care that the "scammers" got the two games I gave out. I have given more away to people who were more deserving of the gift.
And when that number is hitting the hundreds for some people without giving anything back and others keep supporting them, this feels a little futile for me to keep on ousting them :( I have a means to share the rest of my codes but it will take interest, effort and fun to get them :) No more quick giveaways from me, I hope everyone enjoyed the treats, including the few takers and scammers I unknowingly supported as well. I certainly learned a lot this sale...

My experience of this Insomnia sale was more of an eye opener than the previous one as regards the unfortunately inevitable scammers who came sniffing for profit. There seemed to be more of them at the beginning of the event and after my initial disappointment at having offloaded a game to one of them (although my opinion of the recipient was later downgraded from 'Scammer' to someone who was honest but didn't get involved much) it became a case of trying to suss them using a combination of timing (the 'Oh, damn, I just missed' crowd were an obvious giveaway), how the request was camouflaged/phrased, how often I had seen their name and in what context (how many times they had begged), and what level their Rep was. Once bitten, twice shy was definitely the way I proceeded and I decided to wait to find out who the regular contributors were - and thankfully there were a lot who threw themselves wholeheartedly into the proceedings - before I was prepared to offer anything again, and only then by PM. I feel that perhaps the only way to fully enjoy an event like this is to circle the wagons with the people you know and trust and wait to see if any lesser-knowns who turn up make the effort to get involved and contribute before offering games to them. Being guarded with generosity doesn't feel nice and is counter to the meaning of the impulse, but until sufficient information is gleaned it might be the only way to stop the scammers from making a mockery of someone's kindness. So on that "cheery note", I'm off til this settles in my mind and I can focus on the positives I intended to and mentioned earlier in the thread.

But when those within your circle who you know and trust are shooting you in the foot, it makes it very difficult.

the recipient is irrelevant.

Edit: You saw this in practice in the actions of IamSinistar and Foxworks and some others in their 'contest' to be the first to gift anyone who missed a game. ;)

zillatain: *snip*
I know this post is getting a little long and depressing, but I have one more thing. I was going to track down info about the sale, primarily all of Pidgeot's data he collected and make a list of statistics for the rounds. Times quickest/slowest; average sales per minute, start/end times; money GOG racked in; and many more stats. I'll contact Pidgeot and see if he's okay with that, or if he wanted to do something himself. If okay, I'll probably start a new thread with the data when I finish it and provide a link here. Now if there is someone else anyone knows about who is/will do this, I'll...well I'm still going to do it, but keep it to myself.
I really like this community...almost as much as the only other forum I participate in. They don't talk nearly as much. Ha!
That is a really great idea and I would really like to see all the statistics of this promo, if only to confirm that the Insomnia Promo is the most successful sales format for GOG which would then make a strong case for making this a biannual event. :)I know this post is getting a little long and depressing, but I have one more thing. I certainly want to welcome as many people into the forums as I can and let them know what a great community it is. And everyone gets the benefit of the doubt from me when they arrive. However, I do also support the effort by Tarnicus to out those who are clearly doing nothing but trying to reap the benefit of this communal goodwill without ever giving anything back. And by that I mean by not contributing to the community as a member, rather than just by not giving games themselves. I have a number of friends on here who don't have the kind of disposable income that others do, but they give back by participating in discussions and by making the forums a fun place to be.
I'm a biologist by education and thus understand that every ecosystem has parasites. My goal is to keep this ecosystem healthy by encouraging new growth, supporting established organisms, and making the environment antithetical to parasites. So I treat every member as a new specie and wait to see how it integrates before determining what my own personal response to them will be.
