Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Anyone tracking how many haven't been up twice already (not counting for free)? Or have any showed up a third time by now (again, not counting for free)?

YellowAries: and the fact people are essentially cheating to obtain them.
You're assuming this. One of the blues actually said this isn't happening, but I guess no amount of explanations is going to change peoples' minds once they're determined to believe the games are all scooped up by cheaters.

Anyway, I'm done arguing this.

I hope GOG removes freebies from their next promotion. It is causing so much frustration for some people here, and it it takes away from the discussion about the games that are actually on sale.
Many complaints about the Free games. Yes it´s not fair and could be exploited by bots/scripts. But it´s not easy making it fair, one way to do it could be to randomly chose among those who clicked the buy button during the "time window".

ahctlucabbus: I understand people that are pissed off. This sale is very exploitative.

To each their own. No need to go bash someone for giving their opinion. You don't need to defend GOG. They can take care of themselves.
Exploitative in what way? Aren't you using your brain to judge? Isn't everyone? Shouldn't everyone? In what why did they exploit you to make you buy? The only possible way a company can exploit you is either forcing you to buy, trick you into buying (as in stealth bundling or something), or being an idiot and allowing a company to convince you to buy what you wouldn't buy otherwise. But if it's the third one, whose fault was it?

Maybe you don't like the games on sale, maybe you don't like the discount, maybe you don't like the counter, maybe you don't like the green button. Ok, so decide for yourself. No one forced you into anything. If this turns into a flop, you were clearly onto something. If not, well, why should you care? Why should anyone?

Fictionvision: Roughly 4 hours and 40-50 minutes. It ended around 2:20AM EST

Then came back as a freebie to haunt us half an hour later.

spindown: How long did the free copies last?
Instant gone.

Hope the bots enjoy the 5 out of 5 star experience that is Jack Keane.

YellowAries: Just for the fact how GOG handled giving away these free games I vow to NEVER buy another game from GOG ever again... seriously pissed off about this

And I purchased over 70 games from GOG
avatar
gscotti: I'm quite pissed, too, and I got 115 games from GOG. I think I gave this company enough of my money, I think I know where I'll get the other ones for free.
Grow up kiddo. Grown folks is talkin'. Do you guys seriously, in hindsight expect Gog to somehow rig the contest in favor of people who bought more games? Because I would have you and your friend beat by a lot.
high rated
So, it seems like the freebie issue can be summed up as "How dare GoG give away free games that I didn't get! How dare they!" Seriously people, this sale is ABSURD, stop complaining about the freebies and just buy some 80% off games!

StarBoundZA: If you joined GoG for free games then there is something wrong with you. I joined GoG for the DRM free stuff, so that when and if Steam fails I can still play a handful of great games. So far I got a few freebies, nothing from this sale, but honestly I couldn't care less. Atleast they trying something new, something different. I don't think it will be repeated in future seasonal sales but if they choose to do something like this now and then it is really awesome.
I joined GOG on opening month and bought my favorite games in their catalog through the years. I got zero free games that aren't permanents, mostly because of little advertisement for those temp freebies or that I was late to the dance. So yeah, it's been a one-sided relationship so far. But I couldn't be any happier. Nobody in this world has made me feel defeated and victorious all at once.

The true victory will come when I can slay Atlas bear and be one of the few who can say "I have got this commercially sold game for FREE!"

Judgement101: And what principal is that? It seems that your principal in all of this is just "I bought 70 games and didn't get a freebie". Newsflash: There are people with over 100 games from GoG, myself included, who didn't get a freebie.
avatar
YellowAries: No moron, the principal is how GOG executed the freebies for this event.. and the fact people are essentially cheating to obtain them.

* I give up trying to explain this shit*
I feel ya. It's like playing monkey in the middle-the guy in the middle gets upset after awhile. It's just dangling them in front of us saying hey-some people are getting them for free-wanna try? OH sorry-website problems, try again sucker! It just feels like a slap in the face instead of a generous promo, despite how it was intended.
Jack KEane becoming a Meme. "A heavily discounted game that noone wants" :D

It's not the free games that's the issue in itself. Sure in part it keeps the gambling mentality going, but it's also the linearity of the sale with the "what's next?" which in effect forces people to waste way too many hours. How can you not see that as exploitative? It even has 'insomnia' in its title.

Granted, I've had my share of "fun", but a very large part in that, is the "just one more turn" psychology which GOG are very much aware of.
I lost all the freebies that have come up. So what? I still made three great purchases, all DRM-free, with great sub-forum communities and costumer centered support by the GOG team, and that's what really matters. Also, none of the freebies interested me so far, and I'd rather have someone who actually wants those games getting them.

trebor8273: agree they are some who are cheating but a lot of people who haven't manged to get s clicking something. will say it again thousands of people are clicking so you have one chance in a thousand or more to get it
It is still very unfair, since there are many factors involved. Ping/Latency/browser refresh rate after a previous game sells out/etc.
Now if everyone had an equal chance, you wouldn't see any complaining, did anyone complain during the fallout1 or tourchlight when they was free?
If GOG takes away the freebies, i can see people still complaining: "AAAAHH! I was waiting for Plansecape Torment and Neverwinter Nights 2, they came up on sale and they lasted less than a minute! GOG! There must be scripts and bots snapping away the good deals!" :)
