Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

Schemilix: Haha, if I knew, I'd do it myself.

Buenro-games: It must be horrible to like video games a lot and having so much problems with the way both males and females are depicted in them. I mean, you are upset at the way males are depicted also, right? You just don't bring up that issue because it slips your mind, no? Even if you are not a female yourself.

Surely not all male gamers fit the huge muscle bound types or the suave james bond type, which make the bulk of gaming heroes in the games. Strangely, most male gamers (as well as female gamers) don't squabble much about that. I know I don't. I wonder why?
It's not so much that the women are attractive, that's fine by me. I do find it ridiculous when they are wearing next to nothing in a snowy area where all the men are in full armor and furs. It's the clothes, not the beauty that bother me in all cases. I'm sure a guy in a banana hammock in the far north dancing at a crossroads would really bother anyone.

MGShogun: Thank you guys for the wonderful memories.

I will not forget this one for sure. :)

Kaitu: No doubt! We need to see if we can get even more posts during the NEXT sale! :-)
The bar was certainly set really high with this one! As I believe was mentioned in the thread, not even the last two big sales (the summer sale earlier this year and last year's Christmas sale) came close.

The catch is this one was a flash sale (which caused everyone to stay glued to the screen); without this mechanic I doubt this thread would have had even a quarter of its posts.

So, that means GOG needs to make the Christmas sale another flash sale to come close to replicating this.

Come on GOG - you know you want to do it this way again as well! :-D

PanzerAzelSaturn: All gamers play what they like. A lot of women play games. Just like men, they play what they like. What they like is determined by the same things, exposure, interests, skill level, perception, etc.

I'm a woman and I have been gaming for over 30 years. I own over 1000 games as I'm also a collector. You won't find any casual games or sims titles in my collection. I don't like those kinds of games. Maybe if I had never been exposed to or played the genres I prefer I might have tried and enjoys such titles.

I play console and PC equally and always have. My favorite games include: Betrayal at Krondor, Skies of Arcadia, PSO, Soul Calibur, Timestalkers, all Fire Emblem games, PSIV, Shining series, especially Holy Ark and Force III. Harvest Moon 64, Ogre Battle 64, Age of Wonders series, Arcanum, Civ II, Fallout, Impressions city builder series, Morrowind, Tropico series, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Shadow Hearts, DDS, SMT series in general, Dragon Force, PDS, Dark Wizard, FFV, Lufia series, etc.

In addition to my very favorite genres of strategy, RPG, and strategy RPG, I also like 1 on 1 fighters and racing games as well as arcade style beat em ups and shmups.

I like these things because of who I am and the opportunities I was presented with in life, not due to my sex or gender. You play what you like, I play what I like and we can all be happy. Let's refrain from stereotypes and fighting and all have fun playing.
avatar
Schemilix: I fuckin' love PSO! I'm intending to play Ogre Battle 64. I got into TO and now need to play the whole Saga. By DDS do you mean Digital Devil Saga?

I think Sims is more of an age thing. I played it a lot as a kid. I don't know many adults who play it more than 'the odd time to destress'. Then again, I don't know any kids and the adults I know were teens and kids like me when the games came out...
Yes, digital devil saga

piszczel: This survey is very questionable though.

What counts as a game? The survey states that Smartphones count as gaming devices. Therefore mobile games are taken into account. Is Farmville included? Bejeweled? I'm willing to bet money on the fact that they've included girls and women who just casually play games on facebook and on their smartphones. By that definition, my girlfriend is a gamer, however she's not played a "real" game since Sonic on the Sega Genesis. She just plays Candy Crush on her phone.

Now considering this, of course the demographic would be split fairly evenly between the genders, since everyone nowadays owns a smartphone. Everyone plays mobile games once in a while.

There is still social stigma attached to playing games, especially for girls, and they simply don't play as much as guys.

This is just anecdotal, but I've never met a female who would seriously play games in my life. I've never heard of one.
This survey needs to reevaluate it's definition of what a game is in order to be of any us.

Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't bother me if half of gamers we women, I just think that statistic is plain wrong.
I take it if you are an office worker and have opened up Mine Sweeper at the office even by mistake, you are probably in the gamer category. :D

Gaming has become so ubiquitous that it probably falls in the category of TV watcher. Everyone is exposed to watching TV somewhere (even walking downtown) yet some people actually consider themselves TV viewers while others don't. I don't own a TV but watch shows like Daily Show now and then on the internet, unless I forget for a week or something, so what category does that put me? Same happens for someone who plays let's say poker on the computer, is that gaming? Are they gamers? Too much uncertainty on a lot of stuff regarding defining 'gamers'.
While we're listening favourite games:

Final Fantasy Tactics, TacticsOgre are my dual 'can't pick' favourites, Digital Devil Saga, DDS2, Persona 3, Lucifer's Call (Nocturne), Drakengard, Abe's Exoddus, FFIX, FFXII, FTL, Crimson Shroud, Oblivion, Dawn of War, Crusader Kings II, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Vagrant Story, PSO, The World Ends With You, FFTA2 for gameplay if not plot, Golden Sun, KH1/CoM/BBS but the rest suck, Luminous Arc, Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland, LocoRoco 2 and Pokémon Sapphire I'd say.

I also confess to loving the fuck out of Theatrhythm. I used to love Fable but replaying it made it lose its charm.

I would have to think long and hard to compile a "favorites" list... but i see a few on here that could make it.

If you like Golden Sun you should play the rest of Camelots games. Shining Force series, especially 3, and Shining the Holy Ark are my favs by them. Golden sun is super fun, but not up to the console releases by the dev.

Well sure, I find the big, muscle bound men kinda trite and ridiculous. But this self-centred male gamer mentality is pretty myopic.

Look up the difference between a power fantasy and a sex fantasy. Those big huge ugly muscle bound men? Why, they dominate the whole place, the story, the settings. The women? Oh poor me, my big boobs are swaying as the big muscular hero comes to save me, oh woe is me! It's degrading. I actually do not mind women being sexualised, like I said, as long as the women are characterised well. They don't even need to kick ass! Not every woman has to kick ass to be a worthwhile human being, after all. It's practicality. Is she up a mountain with her arse out? Why! Is she in a tropical rainforest with minimal clothing? Well suddenly that makes sense.

I don't like the huge bulging muscular man wearing heavy armour in a fucking desert either, it breaks immersion. I love the Amazon out of Dragon's Crown. I think she's sexy as all Hell, and she kicks ass, and her lack of dress makes sense because she's a Barbarian and barbarians never wear clothes in fantasy games.

You wonder why? Maybe because men aren't historically oppressed and commodified for entertainment and profiteering. Hmmmmm... That's a coincidence. Try not to make your arguments with sarcasm, it weakens them.

Conan the Barbarian never had an issue with it, and I am sure females never complained about the way Arnold S. looked in that role. It was models like him which are the hallmark of what we now consider the way both males and females dressed in fantasy settings. You just need to know a bit about history of where things we now consider as stereotypes comes from.

I mean here is a set of images of Conan, you see, unless you are aware of were this stuff comes from, then you just don't know why things are the way things are.

The demographics for WoW are about 35-45% female - that's a huge amount female gamers right there. I personally have Borderlands, Dishonered and Fallout: New Vegas on my recently played Steam list - I haven't got my gender on display so how would people know that I'm female?

Conan doesn't have breasts. I don't think you have breasts. I don't think you understand that if you're going to be doing backflips across a mountain and swinging an axe and kicking people in the head you need those things tied down or they're going to hurt like a motherfucker and impede you.

My friend's a DD, she can't run without a sports bra! Conan's not being sexualised anyway, it's to show off his AWESOME RIPPLING MUSCLES. Now if his butt was on show and constantly in the camera and he has constant crotch shots and nipple shots, I'm sure most people would be sort of uncomfortable with that too.

Plus if we don't line Conan we can go watch something else. Women with their boobs hanging out of their armour are everywhere, hard to avoid.

Well... conan was a barbarian, I envision him with crude armor if any and a large weapon to wreak havoc with.
