Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

Draggon: There's a small gaming community at The Motley Fool that I've frequented for years. I wrote a little memorial recap of this sale in that forum to try to convey some of what happened here over the last few days. It's totally inadequate, but If interested, you can find it here:

jackster79: Good read and post! Thanks for sharing it!
You're welcome - glad you enjoyed it!

MGShogun: Thank you guys for the wonderful memories.

I will not forget this one for sure. :)
No doubt! We need to see if we can get even more posts during the NEXT sale! :-)

Schemilix: The other person had sources so I'm inclined to take their view on it. Do you have a source for that?

F2P is still gaming. Silly mentality. Just used to invalidate people. Oh you're a woman? Oh well your game's not a real game. Don't be silly. "RPGs are the feminine games right?" Go play CoD." "CoD isn't a real game, go play an RPG!"

Lotus69: I work in the industry, currently in the Free-2-play social sector. We're about 65% female gamers, most of those over 35, they tend to have more disposable income as well.

I'm also not saying that free-2-play means that you're not a gamer it just points to why traditional deveopers are still marketing AAA games for men (teens) as that's still the target market for those products. I'd love to se a genre breakdown by the sex to see how those numbers fall

Look at how most of the free-2-play games are marketed? Cute and cuddly rules the day here for the most part. Zynga owes it's success to the female gamer.

Personally I like that women are getting into gaming, it breaks down those barriers/stigmas and creates more female gamers and game developers.

Also it should be pointed out that with consoles, some are registered (Xbox live/PSN) to women (mothers) who then managed their children's online gaming. Though I'm not sure what percentage this would be.
I still think there are more gamers of the traditionally male-orientated genres than people expect. On TF2 there's always a woman on voice chat for example.
I have not for many, many years enjoyed a forum as much as this one. People really do make a difference. The only one I can recall that even compares was way back in the day , a BBS out of Texas, USA , about the first private BBS to have 32 lines. That group on it was also just great, but this forum I really think even beats it. Thanks to all of you :)
i just woke up and it's over, was a really fun (games, GOG community) and stressful (THE KEANE) sale, SEE YA GUYS, I WILL REMEMBER THIS FOR THE KEANING (ETERNITY)!!!!!!!! XD

RighteousNixon: I have the exact opposite scenario as I am literally surrounded by female gamers (my family is like 80% female, going back like 3 generations) and most of them are gamers. On top of that, my wife is as big of a gamer as I have ever been. Its uncanny how similar our beginning years were in regards to gaming. Like me, she owned an Intellivsion and not an Atari 2600. She also had the same computers I did (Commodore 64, Commodore 128, Amiga 500 Etc.). It really is uncanny just how similar a path we took in regards to gaming.

I think you would be shocked by the numbers coming out of the gaming industry. According to ESA's 2013 demographic study, 55% of gamers are male and 45% are female. That's means female gamers are just 5% away from being an even split in the gaming market.

Here are some other interesting tidbits based on ESA's 2011 demographic study.

* 58% of all Americans play Videogames

* There are an average of 2 gamers in each game playing US household.

* The average U.S. household owns at least one game dedicated console, PC or Smartphone.

* 51% of U.S. households own a dedicated game console, and those that do own an average of two.

* The average age of game players is 30 years.

* Women 18 and older represent a significantly greater portion of the game playing population (31%) than boys age 17 and younger (19%).

* Average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35.

* Of the most frequent game purchasers, 54% are male and 46% are female.

* 43% of gamers believe that video games give them the most value for their money, compared with DVD's, Music, or going to the movies.

* Gamers who are playing more video games today than they did 3 years ago are spending, on average, 49% less time watching TV, 44% less time watching movies at home, and 47% less time going to the movies.

* Gamers who own a dedicated game console use them for other entertainment media, in addition to playing games, 42% use them to watch movies, 22% use them to listen to music, 19% use them to watch TV shows, and 5% use them to watch live content.

* 62% of gamers play games with others, either in person or online.

* 32% of gamers play social games.

* Average number of years gamers have been playing games - 13 years.

* Average number of years adult gamers have been playing games - 15 years (males average 17, females 13)

Here is the full report in case anyone is interested in reading it. There is a lot of interesting info in there.

Schemilix: Tell that to the game designers who won't do anything in case they offend the delicate sensibilities of their male gamers. I mean what, do those devs think a guy's gonna keel over if the female character wears some decent armour for once? Honestly. Pandering to male entitlement is offensive to everybody.
Sure thing, just give me the email addresses and I will happily forward on such sentiments.

To Draggon, Thanks to Jackster79 I followed the link to your article on the sale, very good read, enjoyed it.
Thank you, cjc - glad I could play a little part in this weird journey. :)

I do too, MTV had a series that followed a pro clan consisting of only girls, can´t remember their clan name.

I think it was this one, not sure though http://www.sk-gaming.com/video/5568-PMS_Clans_PMS_Delicate_owning_Fnatic_Zr0

If you never played Quake 3/Quake Live, it´s one of the fastest FPS games ever made.

Haha, if I knew, I'd do it myself.

All gamers play what they like. A lot of women play games. Just like men, they play what they like. What they like is determined by the same things, exposure, interests, skill level, perception, etc.

I'm a woman and I have been gaming for over 30 years. I own over 1000 games as I'm also a collector. You won't find any casual games or sims titles in my collection. I don't like those kinds of games. Maybe if I had never been exposed to or played the genres I prefer I might have tried and enjoys such titles.

I play console and PC equally and always have. My favorite games include: Betrayal at Krondor, Skies of Arcadia, PSO, Soul Calibur, Timestalkers, all Fire Emblem games, PSIV, Shining series, especially Holy Ark and Force III. Harvest Moon 64, Ogre Battle 64, Age of Wonders series, Arcanum, Civ II, Fallout, Impressions city builder series, Morrowind, Tropico series, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Shadow Hearts, DDS, SMT series in general, Dragon Force, PDS, Dark Wizard, FFV, Lufia series, etc.

In addition to my very favorite genres of strategy, RPG, and strategy RPG, I also like 1 on 1 fighters and racing games as well as arcade style beat em ups and shmups.

I like these things because of who I am and the opportunities I was presented with in life, not due to my sex or gender. You play what you like, I play what I like and we can all be happy. Let's refrain from stereotypes and fighting and all have fun playing.

It must be horrible to like video games a lot and having so much problems with the way both males and females are depicted in them. I mean, you are upset at the way males are depicted also, right? You just don't bring up that issue because it slips your mind, no? Even if you are not a female yourself.

Surely not all male gamers fit the huge muscle bound types or the suave james bond type, which make the bulk of gaming heroes in the games. Strangely, most male gamers (as well as female gamers) don't squabble much about that. I know I don't. I wonder why?
This survey is very questionable though.

What counts as a game? The survey states that Smartphones count as gaming devices. Therefore mobile games are taken into account. Is Farmville included? Bejeweled? I'm willing to bet money on the fact that they've included girls and women who just casually play games on facebook and on their smartphones. By that definition, my girlfriend is a gamer, however she's not played a "real" game since Sonic on the Sega Genesis. She just plays Candy Crush on her phone.

Now considering this, of course the demographic would be split fairly evenly between the genders, since everyone nowadays owns a smartphone. Everyone plays mobile games once in a while.

There is still social stigma attached to playing games, especially for girls, and they simply don't play as much as guys.

This is just anecdotal, but I've never met a female who would seriously play games in my life. I've never heard of one.
This survey needs to reevaluate it's definition of what a game is in order to be of any us.

Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't bother me if half of gamers we women, I just think that statistic is plain wrong.

+1 for SMT and PSO...If you would have added Parasite Eve an additional +5 internets would have been awarded.

I fuckin' love PSO! I'm intending to play Ogre Battle 64. I got into TO and now need to play the whole Saga. By DDS do you mean Digital Devil Saga?

I think Sims is more of an age thing. I played it a lot as a kid. I don't know many adults who play it more than 'the odd time to destress'. Then again, I don't know any kids and the adults I know were teens and kids like me when the games came out...
