Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

RighteousNixon: I have the exact opposite scenario as I am literally surrounded by female gamers (my family is like 80% female, going back like 3 generations) and most of them are gamers. On top of that, my wife is as big of a gamer as I have ever been. Its uncanny how similar our beginning years were in regards to gaming. Like me, she owned an Intellivsion and not an Atari 2600. She also had the same computers I did (Commodore 64, Commodore 128, Amiga 500 Etc.). It really is uncanny just how similar a path we took in regards to gaming.

I think you would be shocked by the numbers coming out of the gaming industry. According to ESA's 2013 demographic study, 55% of gamers are male and 45% are female. That's means female gamers are just 5% away from being an even split in the gaming market.

Here are some other interesting tidbits based on ESA's 2011 demographic study.

* 58% of all Americans play Videogames

* There are an average of 2 gamers in each game playing US household.

* The average U.S. household owns at least one game dedicated console, PC or Smartphone.

* 51% of U.S. households own a dedicated game console, and those that do own an average of two.

* The average age of game players is 30 years.

* Women 18 and older represent a significantly greater portion of the game playing population (31%) than boys age 17 and younger (19%).

* Average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35.

* Of the most frequent game purchasers, 54% are male and 46% are female.

* 43% of gamers believe that video games give them the most value for their money, compared with DVD's, Music, or going to the movies.

* Gamers who are playing more video games today than they did 3 years ago are spending, on average, 49% less time watching TV, 44% less time watching movies at home, and 47% less time going to the movies.

* Gamers who own a dedicated game console use them for other entertainment media, in addition to playing games, 42% use them to watch movies, 22% use them to listen to music, 19% use them to watch TV shows, and 5% use them to watch live content.

* 62% of gamers play games with others, either in person or online.

* 32% of gamers play social games.

* Average number of years gamers have been playing games - 13 years.

* Average number of years adult gamers have been playing games - 15 years (males average 17, females 13)

Here is the full report in case anyone is interested in reading it. There is a lot of interesting info in there.

Schemilix: Tell that to the game designers who won't do anything in case they offend the delicate sensibilities of their male gamers. I mean what, do those devs think a guy's gonna keel over if the female character wears some decent armour for once? Honestly. Pandering to male entitlement is offensive to everybody.
The problem with those numbers is that they don't reflect the types of games that women are playing. The vast majority are playing free-2-play mobile and Facebook games. If you look at the core gaming numbers the stats for women tend to drop off.

The other person had sources so I'm inclined to take their view on it. Do you have a source for that?

F2P is still gaming. Silly mentality. Just used to invalidate people. Oh you're a woman? Oh well your game's not a real game. Don't be silly. "RPGs are the feminine games right?" Go play CoD." "CoD isn't a real game, go play an RPG!"

Schemilix: Does anyone have a 3DS and the Bravely Default demo? I swear, that game does the classic 'go out and kill monsters for loot' in the most adorable and perfect way.

This is my favourite, though all four have charming personalities and appearances (tough but elegant knight lady, gentle magical duchess type, flamboyant charmer and the sweet young man). Look at her. Look!

don2712: I have been wondering how many female participants there were in this promo, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of games written to interest female players, they seem to be almost exclusively written by men for men.

I've tried to get my wife interested in video games without any success, she can't understand why I play them or what I see in them. Her fovourite comment is "Why do you always have to be killing things?" which is not strictly true as I have many games with no fighting at all plus, I have explained that when the Zombie apocalypse comes I'll be well trained and ready but, that doesn't seem to help.

Perhaps, with us guys trying to get our partners interested is just an effort to get our hobby accepted as a valid pastime and not a silly waste of time and money when there are always more important things to do and buy, our ladies do not seem to appreciate that at least it keeps us off the streets.

If there are any ladies on this blog I would be interested to hear their views.
I've been watching the promo since my husband told me about it shortly after we woke up the day it started -- Don't Starve was the game on sale then. There were a whole lot of interesting games for me (and him!).

My husband wasn't the one to get me into gaming, though. My dad was. He firmly believed that computers were the future and so my brother and I always had one at our disposal, and usually it was pretty up to date. We did, however, have Macs, so I've missed out on a lot of the classics. My brother and I had edutainment titles to start with, and it was pretty easy to move from there to real games. I think our first one was Myst. It was amazing. I was only in early elementary school at the time, and the three of us played it together--my dad often staying up late to figure out the puzzles. From there we moved pretty handily into adventure games--particularly the LEC titles. Our first was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

So basically my whole life computer games were totally normal. It never even occurred to me that there might be games that girls wouldn't be into because they were girls. Why would that be?

As a result, I've always been a bit befuddled by the notion of needing to market specifically to female gamers (or female non-gamers?). I always got all my game recommendations from guys, and I never thought twice about it. Almost all marketing that I saw was in print form, and that never struck me as particularly gendered one way or the other. I thought Lara Croft was a bit ridiculous, but that didn't stop me from reeeaaalllllyy wanting Tomb Raider 2 for my 13th birthday (and I got it!). I mostly just like good games. I do have genres that appeal to me more than others, but since I've known plenty of guys with the same sorts of preferences (including my husband), I'm going to guess that the fact that I really like RPGs and adventure titles has little in common with my gender. (Though it never ceases to amuse my husband when I get into the mood to play a game where I get to kill things. I think it's because I used to play Havok for stress relief--something about shooting things is relaxing--man, I really miss that game.)

There are games that don't appeal to me -- especially really bloody or scary ones, but I think that has less to do with the fact that I'm of the female persuasion and more to do with the fact that I'm really squeamish (I closed my eyes for whole chunks of House episodes, too) and have never seen the appeal in horror because I'm too easily disturbed. I agonized for ages over Dragon Age -- on the one hand, it was Bioware; on the other hand, it got an M for blood and stuff. Haha. (I love the option to turn the blood on or off in a game--I always use it).

But yeah, my mom always wants to know, too, why there's so much killing, but it's never really bothered me. I always told her that they were the ones trying to kill me first!

A good game is a good game is a good game. I've never felt marginalized by the industry or like they need to make more games that suit me. I've never felt a shortage of interesting games. I'm content.

lol thanks for sharing
Well, Speaking of the K word, I have made a promise to myself and all here are duly authorized to nag me until I get it done.

I have promised myself that after the Holidays and when I get my game budget replenished I will buy , even at full retail price, Jack Keane 2 , I plan to keep it new, not downloaded in my GOG inventory for ever, ( on until I decide I just must try it which ever comes first).

In part as a way to appreciate the Game's Dev's that came into the forum and showed a lot of class in joking with us that night/day (depending) I thought that was real class, thankfully , they were not the usual corporate type mentality.

And 2nd I just know that every time I see it in my inventory I will get a good laugh recalling all the fun had over it.

A good laugh , sometimes, worth far more than the price of the game.

You won't be disappointed if the info so far appeals to you. It lives up to what it promised. Solid, turn based adventuring with a nice twist on the combat to keep it interesting. Demo has no story to speak of, since they're saving it for the full release, but the soundtrack's great, the menus and sound effects ooze polish and the environments are good.

I can't not quote exactly, But it was along the lines of .. They knew we needed at least 4 hours sleep to remain in good health and they were doing their part to see that we got it. I thought that was too cool of them.
I wonder when the blue sales summary post is coming... Hmm... I bet they're having a Scrooge McDuck pool party first.

TheEnigmaticT: Whew!

We'll post some facts here in this thread and on social media as well in a bit, but I wanted to say thanks for staying up with us in our Insomnia Sale. Get some sleep, y'all. :)
I would LOVE to know how many times "Keane" or a reference to Keane or "Keaning" showed up in this thread. :-)

I work in the industry, currently in the Free-2-play social sector. We're about 65% female gamers, most of those over 35, they tend to have more disposable income as well.

I'm also not saying that free-2-play means that you're not a gamer it just points to why traditional deveopers are still marketing AAA games for men (teens) as that's still the target market for those products. I'd love to se a genre breakdown by the sex to see how those numbers fall

Look at how most of the free-2-play games are marketed? Cute and cuddly rules the day here for the most part. Zynga owes it's success to the female gamer.

Personally I like that women are getting into gaming, it breaks down those barriers/stigmas and creates more female gamers and game developers.

Also it should be pointed out that with consoles, some are registered (Xbox live/PSN) to women (mothers) who then managed their children's online gaming. Though I'm not sure what percentage this would be.
The best thing in this sale was this thread.
Thanks to all the people here.

I bought 11 games.
9 in the first round 1 in the second, which was the last I was interested in and an extra 1 in the third round.

I have already missed this thread.
Thanks GoG.com and everyone here.
Thank you guys for the wonderful memories.

I will not forget this one for sure. :)

ThomNG: As on Jack Keane 2: Great to see that one of our products published on GOG.com, is now the most famous title here. You have to understand that it is important for us to get our customers some hours of sleep - 4 hours of sleep per day is the absolute minimum. We are taking care of our fans! Hope you took that chance! :-)

Have a great day
