Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

TheEnigmaticT: Whew!

We'll post some facts here in this thread and on social media as well in a bit, but I wanted to say thanks for staying up with us in our Insomnia Sale. Get some sleep, y'all. :)

Johnmourby: It's been fun Mr Enigmatic :) I know you guys have never done this before, but would you consider doing a community post or a vlog to tell us what this sale and reading the longest thread on this site ever was like for you?
It would be awesome :3
This.

I for one would definitely be interested in what went through the minds of various blues as they read the all manner of topics that were posted during the sale (though only what you feel is safe to share, of course).

JohnnyDollar: Oh boy, I wonder how many Keane related threads are going to pop up now, and how long.

I feel a disturbance in the Keane, as if millions of gamers cried out. :P
I sense it also. A faint ripple in the Keane, but a ripple nonetheless.

Oldster: I wonder how many people died from dehydration during this sale? It was the most exhausting autumn sale I have ever seen. NEVER MORE!!!
avatar
JohnnyDollar: It was like Woodstock. We had one child birth. One guy walked around naked throughout the whole sale. Unfortunately we did have a casualty.

This is the best thing that's happened to me in my life.

:P
You mean The sale or Woodstock? :D

I had an uncle that went there (or at least I think he said he went there). From everyone I ever talked to about that, it has been described as something that was never experienced before and never will be matched or exceeded for all those that were there.

But yes, I would say that for those of us that stuck through this sale over the course of 6 days this would be a digital gamer's version of Woodstock.
got to admit despite being late to the party(missed the first round entirely and most of the second round) I managed to get quite a few games that have been sitting on my wishlist for sometime for cheap.
I think that GOG should warn us next year. I will take a week free from work.

CalicoPup: I think I heard something about that and only vaguely remember reading about it but I didn't join the kickstarter because I am, at best, a casual gamer. I really don't have that much time for games. The ones I bought at this sale when combined with the ones I bought at two previous sales will probably keep me for the next year or so.
avatar
wackyanne: I gave up computer gaming a couple of years ago, really, but there are few classics I want to play a bit here and there. This sale has set me up for most of them, leaving only the Sierra Quests left. Plus, my older son is seven, and I'd like him to know that there is more depth to gaming than Angry Birds ;)
I had a thought a long time ago about raising my children and every couple of years getting them a new system and a bunch of games. Starting them on the Atari 2600 like I was when they're 4 or 5, and from there the Nintendo, SNES/Genesis, and so on, until they hit about 13.

Then I decided not to have kids because it would cut in to my gaming time. And because I'm irresponsible. And a bit of a Sociopath.

So I met a person that loves to travel and rather than having kids, we travel a lot and enrich the lives of friends' children.

I don't know if I should congratulate you or report you. :D

wackyanne: I love HQ2 best of all, but that was one of the few Sierra games we actually didn't "own" but had copied. So we had to make do with a hand-drawn map of our own. I'm hoping that the GOG version will relieve me of guilt and of map-making ;)
avatar
lugum: There are plenty of maps. ;)

I believe the remake made the map part also a bit easier, but haven't tried it.

Thanks for these! It's funny, I got nostalgic for the game when I wanted to roll up a character for D&D (getting back into that after playing it once or twice as a kid). The net was non-existent way back then, and it didn't occur to me to look up maps and manuals. LOL

I did find some wonderful screenshots and other art, though. Oh, my goodness, have computer graphics improved since the first King's Quest! But those Sierra Games are still gold-standards in gaming, as far as I'm concerned....
There's a small gaming community at The Motley Fool that I've frequented for years. I wrote a little memorial recap of this sale in that forum to try to convey some of what happened here over the last few days. It's totally inadequate, but If interested, you can find it here:

The biggest memory I will have of this sale has to do with the amazing amount of beggars that are around the GOG forums. At some moment in time it felt like you were walking around the church plaza on a Sunday. Some of those accounts had just been created during the sale. Hmmm...

That's one of the funniest things I've read on this thread. Probably because I can relate! :)

(but I have 2 kids - youngest is almost 18 though, so I think I've nearly made it!)
It was one of these (rare!) sales when watching sale-connected threads over the various places in internet were at least equally fun as buying games itself.

And what happened around Jack Keane - or to be more specific: what gamers done around it - were so beautifully, extraordinarily funny, absurd and ludicrous that I think this part of the sale alone will make it something that will be mentioned for the years to come. :)

It was tremendously fun to be part of it. Very good job GOG, and I hope we'll something similar in the future!

Hey, we've all got to find our own way through life. If we can find a fellow traveler, that makes it all the better.

And this http://www.sierragamers.com/aspx/m/629854 , has all the hintbooks from the sierra games, but also manuals, and those quest for glory maps. It is all official.
