Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

UncleOvid: Ish. I don't want to start getting mean, but I think complaining about it just displays a bad attitude. I mean, no one is actually LOSING anything. The freebies are just a sweetener, a game, a fun (I think, anyway) chance for an unlooked for extra in an already astoundingly fun sale. It's hardly a broken system.

That said, I find speculating on improvements to be an interesting diversion as well, as least while waiting for The Pit to wind down. And now that I think about it, I think you're right: tracking EVERYBODY'S purchases AND previous wins AND doing it all on the fly in the instant a zillion people push the button would be a little complicated. That pool thing makes sense.

Alien8n: Not actually complaining as such, but if you have a system where the majority have zero chance of actually participating wouldn't you consider that broken? My comments are more geared to working out why it's broken and suggest ways to fix it. Same with the Keane sales lag issue. In some respects it's good that a game "Keanes" so we can go "okay, this looks like it'll take a couple of hours, I'll set my alarm and take a break". I certainly know I did and here I am at the end of the sale having bought all the games I wanted and a few extras for the family. But I can also see ways that I believe would be an improvement on the system which I've mentioned earlier.

End of the day the biggest success for me has been this form though. On the whole everyone's been a great bunch and I've seen a lot of guys helping other guys out, there's been some light hearted banter (some at Gog's expense), and in all it's certainly made the weekend a memorable and enjoyable one :)
Yeah, but I don't think anyone has an actual ZERO chance of getting something (I assume that's what you mean. Everyone here can participate.) Small, yes. Some smaller than others, which I think does lead to valid calls for improvement.

I actually appreciate the Keanes (Which should be real term by now. Someone go make an entry at Urban Dictionary.). While they're annoying for all of us sitting in the forum, knowing we don't want it, I imagine they're a pretty nice feature for the casual passerby who sees Heroes of Might & Magic for three bucks and ONLY 129 COPIES LEFT! (which is, yes, a little trickery on the part of GOG) and picks it up. You'll notice even the slowest games are moving. I do hope GOG's keeping a record of the length of time things sell out in and how many copies are optimal, and use that to tweak the offerings next time around (and I do hope there is a next time; this was superfun).

xckx: Icewind Dale and Sacred. You?
None, so far at least. Waiting on Thief 2, maybe Psychonauts.

KMJX: Okay peoples.
I have one spare copy

Neverwinter Nights : Diamond Edition

to give out. There is a problem though:

- I don't want to put it up for ninja grabs
- My imagination right now is suffering from tiredness, so I have no idea what to do about the giveaway
- it has to be in this thread, it Keane't be any other way.

Any ideas?
I've got some very tricky questions you may want to ask ;)

1. What is the name of the level on which you want to unsuccessfully genocide nurses while being naked?

2. Now find relevant article in english wikipedia. What is the smallest number of moves to solve an example shown there?

3. What is your favourite color?

Disclaimer: I will not take part in this contest ;)

booyabojangles: I don't know if the GOG version suffers the same way, but apparently the Steam "special edition" of Jade Empire is haywire: http://steamcommunity.com/app/7110
I have it on steam and it works fine win 7 64bit

(I will check again now to see if I have a problem starting it)

Craig234: I haven't played it very long, a couple hours. Most people seem to enjoy it more than I did.

I think what it's like is basically, you pick a party with certain skills, each of which helps with various random events that happen while they travel a map.

You can buy a few things - weapons, supplies - and then move around the map on quests, with those events that deplete your supplies. As you run out, you can't win a battle, you can't feed your group, they revolt and leave.

It has a Heroes of Might and Magic type feel in ways, especially the battles.

I found it a bit hard, and just not that much fun, you know when there's a game design that says 'hey people love this and that in Heroes, so they'll love it here'. So I'd say it's worth a try, especially on this sale price, but not great.

keef0723: Thanks for that. Will skip.
Sore, and that might be the right choice for you.

I should mention a couple things I noticed to like - you might like things like pretty extensive character backgrounds and traits that affect inter-party reactions (think Baldur's Gate II) and gameplay (such as players who are against violence against locals - which hurts you in one situation and helps you in another). Also it has a nice 'Spanish guitar music' soundtrack as I recall.

I did find it a bit frustrating running out of things, and some gameplay non-intuitive.

Spare 10 keys with 9 fakes, or even more. Should give everyone a chance to try.

I'm so tired I can't remember what I missed.
