Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

northern7: 1. Expeditions: Conquistador $4.99
2. Psychonauts $2.49
3. Spellforce Platinum $2.49
4. Thief 2: Metal Age $1.99
Wow. The List is so short now...

Alien8n: Not really, harder to implement if you're going for a first click scenario, much easier if you go for a pot. The pot scenario also ensures that the freebie button is displayed to everyone whereas the current way of doing it means a lot of people don't even see the free games.

Thinking back to something something mentioned elsewhere as well. If the people claiming multiple copies are lying and the majority of people actually got only 1 or maybe a few lucky 2 free games then all the claims of 3-15 games that are out there put GoG in a difficult position. Unless they can prove that these people are lying the rest of us carry on believing the system is broken, And if the system is broken there's no incentive to participate and we go away with a negative experience.

UncleOvid: Ish. I don't want to start getting mean, but I think complaining about it just displays a bad attitude. I mean, no one is actually LOSING anything. The freebies are just a sweetener, a game, a fun (I think, anyway) chance for an unlooked for extra in an already astoundingly fun sale. It's hardly a broken system.

That said, I find speculating on improvements to be an interesting diversion as well, as least while waiting for The Pit to wind down. And now that I think about it, I think you're right: tracking EVERYBODY'S purchases AND previous wins AND doing it all on the fly in the instant a zillion people push the button would be a little complicated. That pool thing makes sense.
Not actually complaining as such, but if you have a system where the majority have zero chance of actually participating wouldn't you consider that broken? My comments are more geared to working out why it's broken and suggest ways to fix it. Same with the Keane sales lag issue. In some respects it's good that a game "Keanes" so we can go "okay, this looks like it'll take a couple of hours, I'll set my alarm and take a break". I certainly know I did and here I am at the end of the sale having bought all the games I wanted and a few extras for the family. But I can also see ways that I believe would be an improvement on the system which I've mentioned earlier.

End of the day the biggest success for me has been this form though. On the whole everyone's been a great bunch and I've seen a lot of guys helping other guys out, there's been some light hearted banter (some at Gog's expense), and in all it's certainly made the weekend a memorable and enjoyable one :)

skeletonbow: That would only be shocking if every person who could possibly be a GOG customer and would ever become a GOG customer was a member of GOG at the time the giveaway occurred and GOG never expanded their business afterward by acquiring new customers after the giveaway who had never heard of GOG or the giveaway, and also that all customers who were GOG members, pay attention to GOG closely enough to even know that there was a giveaway and didn't have something else happening that day - and that anyone who didn't found out shortly after and everyone got free codes from others who had spares, and that every person now has it and there is no more market to sell the game or even give it away. ;o)

When presented like that, it's not really shocking at all. There's more people that don't have any of the games GOG has given away for free than there are who have gotten them. ;) Heck, this week alone there are hundreds of people showing up in the forums for the first time who have never even heard of GOG before this promotional sale. :)

stevieknix: I have never received any free games like that. Closest I got was the deal where you got a free copy of The Witcher when you bought another game of some minimum price.

I joined the site three years ago and subsequently forgot all about it. It wasn't until this Summer that someone in another forum I frequent informed me of gog's Summer Sale, so I popped over, saw a few games I wanted, and decided to register. Imagine my surprise when I learned I already had an account.
There's a newsletter you can sign up for, if you're into that sort of thing.

I was kind of the same way. I got an account in January because I wanted Hotline Miami. So I got it, and a couple months later I got FTL and that was that. And then I wandered back by here a few months ago thinking about wishlisting some stuff, and lo and behold, they were offering Torchlight for free. And then there was the Witcher promo, and System Shock 2 was on sale for like, two bucks, and suddenly I'm running by here to check the front page every day....

On second thought, don't get that newsletter. That way GOGness lies...

Derwisch: I finished FF VII on PSX two times... Japanese Version , US Version.... but a HD Remake .... I dont know
Most Remakes never really get it a 100% ... Even if they only upgrade the Graphics ... something is always different, not feeling right ... Yeah I would really wish for a 100% perfect adaption in a new engine .... but will be lost in the Transition ? Can i life with that .... or is it the Soul of the Game , that is missing in the End ?
I don't know. I think the GC remake of the original Resident Evil was amazing. It was an actually scary game, and they messed up with the minds of veterans of the game in a rewarding way instead of a punishing one. Plus, they added a genuinely creepy new villain with a horrifying story.

Also, a couple of old NES/SNES Final Fantasy games have had some very good remakes for the Nintendo DS. It really depends on who does the work.
So I'm prepared for when it comes up, what is Expeditions: Conquistador like?
I know little about it beyond the game page, but would be great for somebody who loves games like Civ and games with some interesting decision-making?

keef0723: I lol'd.

Thank you Holder of the List, Survivor of Keane
07 (=salute )
Yeah I know.. the time of the good Square Games ( Chrono Cross, Bushido Blade, Tobal 2, FF VII, Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhänder, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics ) was the PS One ( and of course the Games on SNES )
everything after that was Soulless in my opinion !

Kennethor: Don't starve is very fun but VERY timeconsuming.
Got it for my son, but it looks interesting. I'll bump it to the top of my list.
whatever happened to Liv Tyler, btw????

ALH: Anyone ever play Nightmare Creatures on the PC?I played the first game back in the day on the Playstation, thought it was awesome. They even made a sequel, wonder if GOG has ever considered distributing NC1&2.
Now that's a good idea! I'd love to see NC 1+2 here at GOG, had lots of fun playing those games on the PS1.
avatar
Alien8n: Want to win back some old gamers? Remake FFVII with modern graphics but the same storyline/gameplay.

Seriously, how awesome would Bahamut be in full 3D HD :)
avatar
Knofbath: I'm tired of remakes, I played the hell out of FFVII already. Give us some new games with familiar battle systems. Eye candy is nice, but rehashing old storylines is boring.
Usually yes, but I think FFVII is old enough now they could probably get away with it. Failing that take the battle system from FFVII and do a proper sequel. I played the PSP prequel and they used so much of the playing style from the later games that for me it didn't seem connected to VII
