Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

zlep: Having grown up with random battles in every Western RPG (Wizardry, Ultima, Bard's Tale, Gold Box D&D, etc) it confused me for years why people seemed to think they were a Japanese thing. Then one day I realised that Western RPGs had sort of exported them to Japan with the Wizardry license, never to be seen on Western shores again. I think the reason it took me so long to notice was that I played so many older games.
avatar
IanM: I guess part of it is that random events are expected in pen and PNP RPGs, so maybe it felt natural to have random battles on older cRPGs, but then they just became filler and used too frequently, just getting in the way of story?
Oh, it doesn't surprise me that Western game devs don't use them anymore. It just surprises me that people only associate them with Japanese RPGs, when they started in Western ones (and stayed there for so many years).

I think in general there's a dividing line in people's brains between older cRPGs and the newer (usually action) RPGs of today. Because people don't think of cRPGs at all, they associate the random battles with modern JRPGs, ever though the Japanese just took that part of the formula from Western cRPGs.

It's interesting that we've now taken from the Japanese all the heavy story elements that they added to the mix, but haven't also taken back the random battles, so we've probably got something even further away from pen & paper RPGs than ever. Oh well, it's good that RPGs aren't a stagnant genre, at least.

KMJX: To pass a little time, I'll give a mystery key to the first person to find out which games I actually missed (those I missed for lack of funds don't count).
Should the key belong to something already in his possession, we'll figure out what happens then ^^
Sacred Gold, La Mulana

fpichardom: Has jade empire passed?
Not yet... :D

Faenwulf: Sacred Gold and Nexus.
Never owned Nexus... not until this sale that is.
Come on, now you're even ignoring the hints that had already been figured out.

groze: So, here I was praising Soul Reaver so much, I decided to play the GOG version I just bought and, god!, is it good! Fortunately, the glorious FMVs work flawlessly in this version, something my disk copies had stopped doing quite some time ago (ever since I upgraded to this crappy Vista OS), unless you fiddled about with the game, and whatnot.

Once again, thank you, GOG, for providing me with some of the best games ever, especially these classics that had stopped working or had issues and your versions, so far, worked seamlessly right off the box (except for Interstate '76, I just remembered that one, but unfortunately there's nothing that can easily be done to solve the "wobbly wheels" glitch).

And, well, that's what I've been doing ever since Soul Reaver was on sale the last time: playing Soul Reaver.
The problem is I want to play a lot, but really have to divide my time a bit. Maybe on a next sale I give it a go, if I finished some games I got now.

Sound the gongs! THE LIST has been summoned!

*BWOOOOOOONG!*

keef0723: I think that the devs / pubs of these games would've accepted the possibility of a title being a slow seller, but considering that these games are here, shows that they thought it worth the risk. Plus, at up to 80% off, they're more likely to get more people buying their game, than suffer any long lasting 'bad reputation' for being slow.

I mean, who's going to remember any of this once the xmas sales happen??
avatar
MechaKong: The retailer's ideals about accepting their sales numbers and their game(s) reputation is only a part of the issue. They obviously don't have an outlook that it's acceptable for their games to be thought ill of.

The other part of the issue is the somewhat sloppy execution of the arbitrary quantities, especially in relation to freebies. It's theoretically possible that people are using scripts to manipulate the system and that's unfair to the honest customers who are actually making purchases in this sale. Freebies should be a reward for honest customers and no matter how they are distributed they should be handed out in a more fair and protected manner.
Or they could have quite easily have had no freebies. Loyal customers or scripts, nobody is ENTITLED to a free game....
"The List" was brought forth.

cpucrust: Yes, learning the language was certainly a challenge. But my memories are mostly of the good experiences I had. Plus, most of Bavaria was very beautiful. After having lived there a short time, I look forward to visiting again someday.
avatar
mudd1: The landscape and architecture sure is beautiful (and the architecture in particular is much more intact than that of the northern settlements ... "intact" as in "not built after '45"). The people tend to be a tad conservative for my taste and also I don't usually feel as Prussian as many make me feel. So all in all, while the economy sure is strong down there, I don't see myself working there any time soon. I'd rather come to Canada to be honest ;)
I must confess that making friends at first was difficult in the small, almost rural city we lived in. The people generally appeared cold and aloof (disclaimer: this is strickly my experience - not implying ALL are that way). However, once I managed to grasp the language better and spent more time with my colleagues and neighbours (i.e. they got used to a strange Canuck living in there midst), I made lasting friendships that I still have today.

If you should ever get the chance to come to Canada, it has quite an extreme variation in landscape. I'm partial to the Rocky Mountains - since I live so close to them!

Does anyone else think it's funny how so many of us are willing to wait 8 or more hours for the chance to save 4 to 10 dollars?
(Says the guy who bought all the games he wanted a long time ago).
