Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

La-Maluna is better than I thought so far. Brings me back to the good old days of NES/SNES. At least I can say that the Insomnia sale has very outstanding games....

mantarrochen: Hmmm, convince me to buy Tropico 3 Gold. I am totally new to this franchise.
I can't convince you for Tropic 3 but having spent a bunch of hours with Tropico 4. It's like Civilization or Sim City but with a whacked out sense of humor.

You basically play the bad guy, (A Castro like Dictator) and build up your country.

Anyone else have anything to add?
Not really my genre, but Tropico actually looks pretty fun. Either way, looks like the sale is going to linger on at least 2 more hours at this rate, so I think I'm out. Got most of the games I was interested in, during the last few days.

Have fun and good luck everyone! May the Keane be with you. :D

I don't think it's anything like Civilization. Sim City, yes.

Huh. I'm sold. We'll see if I regret it in the morning.

northern7: yup...and I bet at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the sales have been from people who came and originally had no intention on buying this...this sale is made for manufacturing impulse buys.
avatar
skeletonbow: All sales anywhere will have impulse buys as there are always impulsive people out there. I'm not really an impulsive person myself however I've bought a number of things impulsively this year from GOG and the various bundle sites primarily due to the prices being so hot for the perceived value. ;) Mind you, despite the number of buys I don't really spend money impulsively or frivolously on anything else, don't have cable TV or satellite or any other recurring entertainment expenses so my gaming budget is pretty cheap compared to the average person for the most part, and a great deal no matter how one slices it hehe.

Let us not forget though that the idea of promotions - is to promote, both the games themselves as well as GOG, and I've noted a large number of newbies to the forum posting in this and other threads so I think the sale is drawing all kinds of new customers to GOG (impulsively or otherwise) that they never had before and getting some good word of mouth. I have a good feeling that this is going to translate to GOG sales increasing and their "buying power" so to speak allowing them to do more to bring on more publishers and titles in the future. It's kind of cool to be a part of the whole GOG community and watch this business grow from the ground up grass roots. I read somewhere that GOG is allegedly the 2nd largest online digital distributor lately. I don't know if that is factual or not but it surprised me in a good way (if it is true), and would suggest we've all got some good things in store for us from them in the future. :)

Just wait for the holiday sales to start if you really really want to see impulsive buying on promotions. :) I know I'm probably going to go crazy again this year clearing off some items from my wishlist. :)

Take care.
Amen :)
Now I just need Thief 2... then I can finally goto sleep.
Been playing Defender's Quest while I wait for games to go by.

edit: also looking to get Expeditions: Conquistador...

Tropico 3 has you managing a small Caribbean island as a despot. You build up the islands production and resources while trying to keep the people happy or quelling revolts. You can play it as a benevolent patriarch or ruthless dictator kept in power by force. They generally give you a set of goals and a time period of office. You'll have to balance relations with the foreign powers of the US and USSR, the time period is generally the 50s to 70s, so expect retro music and events from that time period.

The soundtrack is pretty good as well. Listening to it right now :D

tim-tom: When the sale started I was only planning on buying 3 or 4 games. I ended up with 29 and still waiting for brutal legend.
Don't worry, after another 2 or 3 mega blowout sales you'll have about 200 games and future sales you'll only want to pick up 2 or 3 of the better priced ones. :)
Yeah Tropico 3 is like Sim City except you are a Dictator on an island and the buildings aren't as modern. Game has great sound and atmosphere.

Also Tropico has always been the more intimate series getting you down on the citizen level. Each citizen walks around as they would in a game like Sims (you watch them go to work, eat, vacation, etc). Lots of individual needs you need to satisfy and if you don't they will attempt a coup on your dictatorship so you might have to execute them or send your military to put them down. Things like that.

Fun city building series (though admittedly the difficulty went way down for the 3rd and 4th edition. Citizens were way too easy to keep happy for my tastes. In that sense I prefer the original Tropico.)

How would you rank the 3 games, assuming you've played them?
