Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

from a marketing prospective, what GOG needs to do while this sale is on is have streaming adverstiment or at least flash updated ads of their product and upcoming product...they missed out on this one.

northern7: Well, one you ABSOLUTELY have to check out is "the HumbleBundle". Sales for charity, usually with steam keys too. Can often get 5 games for $1 with 2 of them or more being very decent.

jpwiseguy: Yes, and another good one is Groupees.

bundlestars

Briareos262: GoG and steam are it for me. I'm not gonna get into too many distribution places.
GreenManGaming and GamersGate sell games for Steam. All but one or two of the games I've bought from them have been for Steam.

Knofbath: I''m up to 20 games this sale, plus another from the "Mix and Mac", way more than I planned on getting.

The sale format forces you to take a close look at the games than you normally would in list form. Though the artificial scarcity is pretty evil.

RichterSnipes: See, that's the part of this sale that I find really successful. The extra pressure put on individual games makes people examine stuff outside their standard comfort range. It's made me attached to several games I had otherwise only heard of once or twice, that's for sure!
I know that feeling, I would not have gotten U7 if not for this sale. Privateer possibly, since I love open world space games. Seriously if you like that type of genre, look of Evochron Mercenary, only space game I know where the whole universe is seamless, and you can even pilot yourself down to planets, the single guy who makes them even added planet walker mechs in an upgrade at the end of last year.

Schemilix: I dunno, a lot can be said for putting niche, obscure or taboo topics into the mainstream, but frankly I think the people pioneering that to an ignorant audience need to be a member of that group. It's why in the 80s feminist books were written by women. Not because men cant be feminists, but because back then only women really understood the struggle of being a woman. Many more men understand the topic now.

Trans issues? You'd want to get a trans author to tackle that in fiction. Same for anything of that sort. You need someone who really understands to bring it to people who really don't, I think. It's why the portrayal of homosexuals in media can bother me sometimes. In British media it's usually fine, but in American media it's just as often sensationalised and that's as problematic as treating it as taboo; homosexuals, bisexuals, pansexuals etc. - we're just people.

And the same goes to a lesser extent for BDSM. If you're going to tackle such a topic, have a fucking brain. Don't trick thousands of people into thinking their stupid abusive version of BDSM is what normal, safe-sane-consensual people do. Yeesh.

CarrionCrow: That's the problem, though. Why look at reality when the fantasy can be so much gaudier, so much more extreme. Take a person whose life is boring, and they might look for what they consider the most extreme thing possible and build a fantasy around it. It certainly isn't real and they have no connection with the reality of it. And they most assuredly have no interest in the concept of their extreme being normal (normal meaning boring to them, reminding them of their own unhappy, unfulfilled lives).
That explains why it's successful, yup. People do say oh it's just fantasy. For one, people don't know that when they read it. Secondly, fantasy reflects the mind of the author, can creep into the mind of the reader.

Dismissing crappy representations of this or that in the /genre/ fantasy because it's fantastical annoys me. I mean you have dragons and wyverns but you think that you need to oppress the non-whites and the women and so forth because that's 'historically accurate'. What in dicks. 'It's not real, it doesn't matter!' A real person wrote that, get bent. But that's a different topic entirely from what you said.
4 left!

Tropico 3 is great, spent a solid 6 hours on that game today between various things I had to do.

Still wish this was Watcher 2 lol. I'm going off, if anyone sees Watcher 2 and snags it for me I'll trade ya a future humble bundle or something.
