Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

I''m up to 20 games this sale, plus another from the "Mix and Mac", way more than I planned on getting.

The sale format forces you to take a close look at the games than you normally would in list form. Though the artificial scarcity is pretty evil.

GhostwriterDoF: It's not the kind of thing that belongs in the mainstream either, since the majority of people would not be drawn into it in the first place, and most would never understand it....

Devoidless: The stuff they portray in 50 Shades isn't even mainstream in the BDSM 'community', for lack of a better word. If it was better authored, it would be fine. BDSM in of itself is isn't dangerous, vile, cruel or abusive. There are different level, of course, but the stuff in those trash novels is more akin to what happens to sex slaves bought off the black market. It's just not cool.
It would be like introducing someone to the concept of puppies, and only showing the footage puppies shitting on carpets, eating shoes and puking on cats.
From what I've heard there's a distinct lack of aftercare in them. Like the equally shitty novel it was originally a fanfic of, it's full of co-dependence and borderline rape fantasies of the author, it's really... not good.

northern7: I'd say you are wrong...i'd be willing to bet that sales were actually much stronger - many many more impulse buys with people spending on things they had no intention to to begin with - this sale is a cash cow for them and other online distributors will imitate. It has already been mentioned by the guys at gamefly or getgames that they are interested in perhaps doing the same thing.
avatar
tim-tom: When the sale started I was only planning on buying 3 or 4 games. I ended up with 29 and still waiting for brutal legend.
Wow..I had two i wanted and ended up with 20 LOL...^5 for impulse buyers!! :)

northern7: greenman gaming and gamersgate are two other good online distribuiton sale companies too. Good prices to be had everywhere if you are willing to look.

Briareos262: GoG and steam are it for me. I'm not gonna get into too many distribution places.
Greenman and Gamersgate are really just 3rd party distributors of other platforms' keys. The few games I've bought from both places were just Steam keys.

GhostwriterDoF: I'm only waiting for Jade Empire after being sold on it listening to all the good praise of the game in this thread... :/
avatar
MGShogun: I wish that they wouldn't hype Jade Empire so much in this thread. Too tempting as hella.
To me it's all about the setting. After spending countless hours in a typical Medieval/Fantasy setting, it was amazing when Bioware decided to provide gamers with the opportunity to be in an oriental type setting. And since Bioware is a quality company, it was a must buy regardless of its imperfections or possible shortcomings.

I still remember stumbling upon the RTS Shogun: Total War and realizing how awesome it was to be departing from the traditional weaponry and style of European combat and or Fantasy genre, and having an oriental style melee stuff. Really awesome stuff.

It's a welcomed change of pace. Wish I had Total War again.

kcrabb: I got one freebie, aquanox 2, i had no desire for the game, but I was lucky enough to get it. I managed to click on it very late at night. I figured everyone was sleeping. but yeah i've been clicking every 3-4 games like clockwork and nothing!
Since it's an international site, I'm not sure the time of day makes much of a difference. Seems like there's always lots of folks on here.

Anyhow, I know the freebies are limited and wasn't really expecting to get one, but the way they are going about them in this sale pretty much gives people on high-speed connections a better chance, and those with slow ones, or in some remote country just get frustrated. I hope they can come up with a better solution next time.
Get your clicking fingers ready, folks.

I'd say smart money's on NWN : Diamond coming up next

northern7: Well, one you ABSOLUTELY have to check out is "the HumbleBundle". Sales for charity, usually with steam keys too. Can often get 5 games for $1 with 2 of them or more being very decent.
Yes, and another good one is Groupees.

See, that's the part of this sale that I find really successful. The extra pressure put on individual games makes people examine stuff outside their standard comfort range. It's made me attached to several games I had otherwise only heard of once or twice, that's for sure!

NO! DON'T JYNX IT!
Jade Empire, please be next. I beg you.

JohnnyDollar: *looks at registration date* Do you remember when they played that joke and said GOG was shutting down, then they dressed as monks an apologized?
avatar
Khalaq: Oh, yes, I remember it well. By that time, GOG had already been "up" and running for quite a while, and the community was already solidly established. The fallout from that was tremendous.
Tbh it irritated me a little bit. Another customer here and I were in contact about it and getting ready to trade inventory, at least the ones that we had downloaded and archived already.

Schemilix: I dunno, a lot can be said for putting niche, obscure or taboo topics into the mainstream, but frankly I think the people pioneering that to an ignorant audience need to be a member of that group. It's why in the 80s feminist books were written by women. Not because men cant be feminists, but because back then only women really understood the struggle of being a woman. Many more men understand the topic now.

Trans issues? You'd want to get a trans author to tackle that in fiction. Same for anything of that sort. You need someone who really understands to bring it to people who really don't, I think. It's why the portrayal of homosexuals in media can bother me sometimes. In British media it's usually fine, but in American media it's just as often sensationalised and that's as problematic as treating it as taboo; homosexuals, bisexuals, pansexuals etc. - we're just people.

And the same goes to a lesser extent for BDSM. If you're going to tackle such a topic, have a fucking brain. Don't trick thousands of people into thinking their stupid abusive version of BDSM is what normal, safe-sane-consensual people do. Yeesh.
That's the problem, though. Why look at reality when the fantasy can be so much gaudier, so much more extreme. Take a person whose life is boring, and they might look for what they consider the most extreme thing possible and build a fantasy around it. It certainly isn't real and they have no connection with the reality of it. And they most assuredly have no interest in the concept of their extreme being normal (normal meaning boring to them, reminding them of their own unhappy, unfulfilled lives).

sdanesh: About Jade Empire. I'm currently forcing myself to finish it. It's a really good game, but if you've played like every other Bioware game, it's just like those. If you have, say, KOTOR fresh on your mind, Empire might feel too familiar. The difference is the combat system is more like the one in those Batman: Arkham Asylum games. Others have said to play it on a harder difficulty level and I think I agree with that. If you can't get the game now, relax. You'll play it later. It'll wait up for you.
I agree, in fact some of the level design feels oddly familiar with KOTOR, heck even Dragon Age. But for me that was about the only negative aspect. Here's hoping Bioware revisits this world again, it has a really great fiction.

Ive bought from everywhere but im trying to cut back and go GOG only. Pretty much all the other places (and the includes Humble one now -DRM free my ass - they are a shadow of what they used to be - drm free/cross platform - hell they regional price now too ) sell Steam keys or use Other DRM to lock the games.
