Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Briareos262: hey question. would a 500gig external drive be enough to back up most gog games. My store has one for $40, im on the fence about it......
avatar
skeletonbow: GOG games vary in size from a couple of megabytes to 20 or more Gigabytes each, and there are 650+ games in the catalogue. Someone might own one game, or all of them. How big a hard disk you'd need to back them all up would depend on how many games you have, and how big each one of them adds up to total including any bonus extras you might have downloaded, so there's no generic way to answer your question as yes or no really. ;) The only real answer is "yes, if the games you own on GOG total up to a size smaller than 500GB" but that kind of goes without saying really. LOL

I've got 210 GOG games currently, and have downloaded all of them including their extras. I believe all of my games are current versions barring any silent updates that might have occurred in the last 10 days or so. My entire collection totals to: "277 GB (298,317,279,232 bytes)" using the 'size on disk' metric reported in Windows which is something that can be used as a guide for estimation. If you've got a lesser amount of games then you're probably fine, but even then if you have a smaller number of games but the games you own tend to be larger than what I have you might use more space.

The only way to know is to download all of them and total up the sizes, or to scrape the GOG website for size info or access it using their undocumented API the downloader uses (someone reverse engineered it and there's a PDF online somewhere).

Hope this helps.
It does. I'm gonna go with at least 1TB drive if I can. Thanks.

nijuu: It could also be argued that the time taken for one game sold to clear ie RCR 7 hour marathon, also means potential buyers of other games might just not wait or come back (and go away with negative thoughts about how sale is handled)

Buenro-games: Or maybe sleep. :)

I'll be honest, I don't think I am the only one here who is grateful for some of the slow burners that allowed to take a break. I only wish that by now they would really speed it up, since it's getting really really long.
All the slow ones were up when i was awake :/

SpiderFighter: I used to back them up, but then it became a pain to try and keep up with the patches and updates as new OSes were introduced. There's really no need to back them up; GOG keeps all your games, including ones they've removed from the site (they even patch games they no longer sell).

justanoldgamer: And if they go our of business? They seems to be a healthy company but I've seen lots of seemingly successful company close suddenly. That's the major reason why I don't like DRM, if the business close than you can't play your game or music or movie...
True, but I feel good about these guys doing the right thing if that were to happen. When Betrayal at Antara was broken for over a year, and people were complaining on the forum, I looked up the CEO's email and wrote him about it. He immediately got back to me and the patch was released two days later, with frequent updates by staff on the forum asking people to make sure it worked.

These guys are solid.

gamingrn: Airplane's got its share of great quotations. Another classic 80's comedy.

Schemilix: Leon's getting laaaaaaaarger.
Oh god. Stephen Stucker was the best in that series.

RandomJC: Likely. Possibly. And that's why I have a cat.

BHTrellis: And with a cat you get all that WITH the abuse. I need a cat, but my income doesn't allow it for the extra rent.
Cats are wonderful things. Don't need walks, clean themselves, and more than willing to eat your corpse if they get hungry.

Sounds familiar.

Briareos262: I agree, there are a few good movies like that. I can't think of them right now because of this wonderful sale going on that has disrupted my sleeping pattern for the past few days ^_^

No love for the Aussies from GOG. :(

Well at least I hope you get a good exchange rate. :)

GhostwriterDoF: I would love to see the faces of our bleary eyed, hardened Insomnia Sale veteran GoGlodytes reading that quote... :)

Schemilix: My laptop's resting on a second-year Developmental Biology textbook. I could quote from that about how mice turn inside out if you want, that'd confuse anyone.
Is clicking on the Buy button an exercise of a higher, or lower mental faculty, if the outcome is a freebie won?

RandomJC: Well, I do force everyone here have to deal with me, so maybe it's some sado-masochistic glee I get from this.

kecskeszarv: The best kind of glee ;)
I feel the need to run around going "Wee." I think my need to sleep switch has been turned on.

I remember that one. Haven't seen the movie in ages. It was indeed funny.

RandomJC: So the question now is, why am I still around now that I've gotten everything I wanted?

kecskeszarv: Masochism and community?
The question is what happens when the final game is sold? Bang or whimper?
Couldn't resist and got Theme Hospital eventually. Must be a morning thing - itching for action :)
