Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Schemilix: And each time someone points out that GOG has no reason to do that because they sell anyway and that's nonsense.
avatar
nijuu: It could also be argued that the time taken for one game sold to clear ie RCR 7 hour marathon, also means potential buyers of other games might just not wait or come back (and go away with negative thoughts about how sale is handled)
...Well no because the games still get sold eventually. The same number of units are sold no matter what.

That is to say...don't anthropomorphise needlessly.
I would love to see the faces of our bleary eyed, hardened Insomnia Sale veteran GoGlodytes reading that quote... :)

Buenro-games: I think the blame on that one falls on Dont Starve, Rott, Hotline Miami. I think those are the main culprits.

CarrionCrow: Can't forget Fez. That one took several hours to finally piss off.
Retro City Rampage took around 8 hours. Best sleep I have had this weekend.

Boredom? Loneliness? The need for inhuman companionship?

Or maybe you stay for the abuse? Oh, wait... That's me.
Darn it, I just don't have any more in me....Must sleep. I guess I will get Expeditions Conqustidors at Humble Weekly and just add Jade Empires to my wish list for a later sale...(unless this is still going on in the morning.

Good Luck to all who are waiting for something specific, I hope you are successful!!

jpwiseguy: I'm glad someone else agrees, I caught hell for saying that last night from several different people. They were clearly idiots though, so I didn't bother arguing with them.
I don't see why you have to call people idiots.

Someone did mention the PR thing, but as a rule I think most people agree this sale was a great idea and have had great fun, so hey. I'm sure the team will take some ideas on board; it's always good for PR to listen to customer feedback and they've had a presence in this thread.

howardc007: It was a great movie! Many quotable lines.
I agree, there are a few good movies like that. I can't think of them right now because of this wonderful sale going on that has disrupted my sleeping pattern for the past few days ^_^

Briareos262: hey question. would a 500gig external drive be enough to back up most gog games. My store has one for $40, im on the fence about it......
GOG games vary in size from a couple of megabytes to 20 or more Gigabytes each, and there are 650+ games in the catalogue. Someone might own one game, or all of them. How big a hard disk you'd need to back them all up would depend on how many games you have, and how big each one of them adds up to total including any bonus extras you might have downloaded, so there's no generic way to answer your question as yes or no really. ;) The only real answer is "yes, if the games you own on GOG total up to a size smaller than 500GB" but that kind of goes without saying really. LOL

I've got 210 GOG games currently, and have downloaded all of them including their extras. I believe all of my games are current versions barring any silent updates that might have occurred in the last 10 days or so. My entire collection totals to: "277 GB (298,317,279,232 bytes)" using the 'size on disk' metric reported in Windows which is something that can be used as a guide for estimation. If you've got a lesser amount of games then you're probably fine, but even then if you have a smaller number of games but the games you own tend to be larger than what I have you might use more space.

The only way to know is to download all of them and total up the sizes, or to scrape the GOG website for size info or access it using their undocumented API the downloader uses (someone reverse engineered it and there's a PDF online somewhere).

Hope this helps.

Update: I have only downloaded the English Windows installers, no other languages and no Mac bits. If one downloads that stuff too they'll have to increase the size accordingly to accomodate.

My laptop's resting on a second-year Developmental Biology textbook. I could quote from that about how mice turn inside out if you want, that'd confuse anyone.
Wow, they really saved a lot of awesome games for the end. NWN, IHNMAIMS, HoMM 3, Brütal Legend, Jade Empire, King of Dragon Pass, Thief 1, 2, 3, Tomb Raider 1+2+3, Witcher 2, etc, etc. Should be fun times for the end.

Likely. Possibly. And that's why I have a cat.
