Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

CarrionCrow: Suggestion - if you haven't played these games before, read the manuals beforehand. Things like character creation, classes, combat and spells will make a lot more sense.

trustymutsi: Heh... I figured out the manuals are essential after trying to play Masters of Orion last night :)

I forgot how important manuals were back in the day. Tutorials have spoiled us! :)
Having read an hour or so before before attempting to play. Ah, the good old days :)

FudoMyo: If time is money, and I've been sitting here for three days trying to nab NWN1 for 2 bucks, then I'm a complete idiot and should just pay full price for it and go to bed.

What psychological trickery compels us to sit here and do this!?
Well....the decreasing number meter, for one. It's a staple of video games, and so the audience will latch onto it and its ever decreasing number pattern. Video game - hit an enemy, watch its meter decrease, see the numbers, continue until it's gone, gets replaced with a new meter and new numbers.
Two - basic and obvious. People are suckers for deals, even when they have to go to ridiculous lengths to get them. Also, the longer you have to wait to achieve success, the more you feel bound to do so, even when the ratio of productivity loss versus monetary gain becomes skewed against you. Another video game mechanic as well - the "I can't quit now, I've already pissed away 85 hours on Nonsensical Crap Quest 2015! I have to see it through!"
Three - deals on a timer. People are also suckers for anything that says "HURRY HURRY HURRY YOU'VE ONLY GOT 2.6 SECONDS TO CAPITALIZE ON THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME DEAL! DON'T GET LEFT BEHIND!"
Four - the idea of freebies. People are yet again suckers for getting crap they're willing to pay for for free. Even if you know in your heart of hearts that you have a better chance of winning the lottery while surfing on the back of a great white shark, you'll still automatically go for it. (I've been doing that and consequently feel like an idiot EVERY SINGLE TIME.)
Five - basic human desire. Deciding based on thoughts, memories, connotations and all that good crap that object x is just something you cannot live without having right this nanosecond. Mix five with three and you get the tempering factor that you COULD buy it full time, but you'll feel stupid if you do that when instead, if you just wait long enough.....
That's what I can think of off the top of my head. No accounting for x factors like guilt, duty, desire to do something nice for another person.

wanderlust76: Oh #$%^ I had to go for like 7 hours I missed BG and IWD1? Argh I haven't seen my BG discs in years I wanted them both for the digital copy. Not to mention I never had the expansions to either one of them.
Same here (as for why I bought them). I know exactly where my cds are, I just don't trust them to still work :/

At least I still have all the manuals here :)

BillyMaysFan59: Looks like Postal 2 is the next Don't Starve/Miami Hotline now...just got out of the shower and it's still up
avatar
Devoidless: This is moving quite well compared to those titles.
Yeah, Hotline Miami (Miami Hotline, whatever it's called) took almost forever, at least this game got in the orange zone sooner.

I remember when, after buying a game at a mall, the entire car ride back I would spend reading instruction manuals and poring over maps. These days, thoe little anemic pamphlet they give you only take 5 minutes to totally digest.

141 left! the horror!

(but if theme hospital is next i shall forgive all)
I just made the "mistake" of watching a Witcher 2 review... Now I'm not just tempted by it, I want it! D;

clcaztx: Anyone interested in a Neverwinter Nights 2 trade? I have System Shock, Master of Orion, or Icewind Dale
I´ve been looking for MOO all day... :-) what would you like to trade it for?

ALH: Postal 2 sold pretty steady up until it crashed at around 300.
Don't Starve sold its first 500+ copies quite well too.

foxworks: Are we getting bored waiting for Postal to pass?

wanderlust76: I agree NWN1 OC was underrated - everyone said it wasn't any good just because that's what all the magazines and Gamespot said. It maybe wasn't the best but definitely not as bad as people made it out to be.
avatar
MysterD: I thought the Ancient Race part of the campaign either should've been cut-out entirely or fleshed-out much better.

Also, one of the best quests - it's a Side Quest and has to do w/ a deciding on a Trial. I think it was in Chapter 3, IIRC.

Also, when compared to BG series - NWN series didn't really give players enough party members (ONLY ONE!) to take w/ you at once and/or even much control over your party even. And sometimes, your party members' AI wouldn't really follow your orders. At least in BG and DAO, you can turn the AI off and micro-manage them and get your way in combat - and at least you can blame yourself, if you get pounced in combat in those games. Also, you didn't even much control over your party's inventory and equipment - sorta of like in DA2.

Not until Hordes did gameplay get much better in a SP NWN game, IMHO.
So true. Dynamics between party members can do a lot to make them seem more alive, and the larger party also allows for a much more strategical approach to combat.

NWN2 did this really well. In early reviews, some people were complaining that party members were always bickering and that it annoyed them. I found that aspect of the game actually added to the characters' depth. OF COURSE the good and evil or lawful and chaotic characters are going to disagree about the way you should tackle a problem. If you want to have a team that operates smoothly, you should have to consider personalities when you choose your party members, not just their stats.

That's long gone, so it's not going to be valid.

Velgor: I know, right? I've thought about this as well, yet here I sit...ignoring work that's piling up, etc. All just to save a few dollars. It's like driving 40 miles round trip to save 5 cents on gas.
That is an excellent analogy. And yet I'm still sitting here. But...

A) I've had a great time.
B) I never realized how great the GOG community was until I ghosted this forum for hours. I even bought a few gift keys to join in the fun.
C) I impulse bought some great games I have no regrets about. I'd never heard of Anvil of Dawn or Age of Wonders until this sale, and both have proven to be fantastic.

On the minus side, I think my wife is ready to leave me with the kids. On the upside of that, I probably won't even notice, and it'll leave me some free time to play all these great games I've just bought.
