Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

snip3rfire: As an Aussie, can I just say this sale really doesn't favour us!

When we go to sleep this sale seems to speed up, and when we wake up this sale seems to come to a halt. Really not in our favour!
avatar
rookie1: i know exactly what you mean.
You know what the problem with your statement is? It's called an 'Insomnia' sale. If you go to sleep.....just sayin'. =D
avatar
snip3rfire: Today for me was mostly Hotline Miami (took ages to get rid of...), and I can't even remember what else because they also dragged on. Lucky if we covered 6 or so games in so many hours.

Tonight for me has been a bit better, but I guess that's because a lot of people in the US have just woken up.
avatar
Suloyapla: Actually, I was awake with you guys for most of it. :-)
#commitment

I'm also not sleeping. It's 1:11AM in Australia now. About the third night in a row I've done this... :P

Faenwulf: People, I am shocked and appaled.
How come that one of the absolute old tiem clasics is keaning on us?
HOW?!

KMetalMind: As many other titles:
1) People who loved it probably already had it.
2) I´m not sure, but the game should have been in other sales, narrowing down the numbers.
3) Then even if there´s people interested which don´t own it, there were rounds 1 or 2.

I seriously think this sale should have stopped after round 2, and that´s said by somebody who has bought a game on 3rd round and gotten a freebie. Unless the game is too new, or too famous, there´s no way to sell so many units in that short amount of time.

For example, I personally got Rayman Origins less than an month ago on another sale. That means one person less on this sale...
I got in on round three... yeah... Didn't get an e-mail from gog until that far in. >_>
How's this for an idea for future promos?

Take 100 games (or more, we like more)

Set a sale volume that you want to hit per game.

Display the games one at a time until either they sell out or 15 minutes has passed. If they haven't sold out then they get added back to the sale at the end of the queue. Mix with freebies and go. To ensure some longevity where popular games are concerned you can still split them into groups so the ones that sell out within 15 minutes get repeated again upto their max quantity (so Neverwinter Nights would still get 3 sales of say 1000 per group for a total of 3000 but wouldn't have any copies added to the back of the queue, unlike Jack Keane 2)

So it's basically the same but without the 4 to 5 hour waits and in theory you should also be able to get whatever game you want in a single sitting. Only downside would be the last day would be 2 or 3 games repeating until the last game is finally gone.

Also, swap out the freebie rules for 10 seconds to click, one registered click per account and randomly assigned to predetermined quantity of people.

HOW?!

BlueLlama: So I take it that particular term has pretty much lost all meaning now? I'd say it's selling at a pretty decent rate for a third run.
It's only Keaning in relation to its average reputation of being one of the best space-sims and therefore should sell much faster. But even some of the best are oversaturated in the third round.
avatar
zlep: Giana Sisters went fast because GOG only put up 200 (?) copies, not 600. GOG is largely determining the speed of individual titles, based on their own whims. We can but guess at the mysterious workings behind the Keaning...
lol I love that keane is a verb now.
what games have been up since Fez?

SpiderFighter: Lol! Now I feel guilty. :)
I realized I couldn't play and keep an eye on the thread, so I'm working on sorting my latest games into the catalog. I have somewhere around 260 now, and I've been lazy about alphabetizing the last few. http://www.gog.com/mix/spiderfighters_collection_with_reviews_updating
avatar
zlep: And you *should* feel guilty! How could you!

Sorting your games catalogue is the gaming equivalent of rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.

You were supposed to be a role model!!!!!

(Ahem, but I do really like that you're adding your impressions of games to your list. Wish more people would do that. So much more interesting than just seeing a list!)
Thanks! (Love the Titanic analogy, btw...very appropriate right now :)
I'm the same way. I'll always give a "Like" to a list where someone took the time to tell me what they thought. It isn't easy sometimes though, to summarize a review into 249 characters! It's taking me a while to do. Many of the games I've already played, but it's been so many years since, that I wanted to play them again so that my reviews aren't shaded by nostalgia.

Also, most of my Mix time is taken up by the GOG Games Without Manuals (& Where To Find Them) list. http://www.gog.com/mix/gog_games_without_manuals_where_to_find_them

Do you (or anyone reading this) have a Mix to share? :)

Alien8n:
Yeah, people have said similar things liek this since round two.
And we all hope Gog will do it like this (or similar) when they do an Insomnia sale again.

I get the insomnia sale bit but during the day you spend the whole day waiting for the next game. Maybe have more limiting numbers and rather have more rounds, that way it could keep the momentum up.
avatar
CorranHorn: Why are some games that only where on disks the size of a CD?
You know, mostly because before DVDs there were CD-ROMs which, not surprisingly, had the size of a CD.
A question to pass time:

What has everyone been eating and drinking to keep them going over these past few days?
avatar
deathmyrk: what games have been up since Fez?
Fez $2.99
Strike Suit Zero $4.99
Chaos Engine FREE
Aquanox $1.49
Wing Commander: Privateer $1.49

:)

Whoops, put a £ sign in there! :P

Now this would have been nice.... it´s very hard to get a freebie when you live too far away...

Which ones are you talking about? Some games had floppy releases and were later rereleased with voice over or other additions.
