Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

JohnnyDollar: So, does anyone regret buying any of the ones on special so far?

I regret getting Two Worlds II. I ignored the mediocre to average reviews that I saw everywhere and bought it on impulse. I could tell within a few minutes that it has low production value. Good thing it was cheap. :P

Kaitu: Only ones I have tried are Don't Starve & RCR. Feel as though I already got my money's worth out of both of them.
Agree with this. I got both those games in this promo, and I've already spent more time looking at the box art for them than any other games I can remember buying. Ever. Even the 80s cRPGs with the really *great* (but barely related to game) box art. I think by now they may be more firmly branded into my brain than the Mona Lisa. That's value right there.

So far nothing from this sale. But I'de prob. have to go with ToEE (I cant blame GOG for that). I dont normally mind Turn-Based RPGs but with ToEE combat just feels *SO* slow.

I will give the game a point that I think even today the gfx aint that bad. For some reason I can also look past that it doesnt really have a story either.

None of these games in the promo were on my wish list. I got a few games that I have a mild interest in just because the price was so low. That's what a good promo does though. It makes a buyer out of someone who wouldn't likely buy the game otherwise.

Khalaq: Be patient with Two Worlds II. It's actually not bad once you give it some time to grow on you.
It seems like I've read several posts from others saying the same. I'll give it more of a chance sometime later.
*yawn* I'm back lads and lassies. That was some good sleep.

Anybody got an updated list? Is Witcher 2 and/or Aquanox 1 yet to come?
And what happened after Don't Starve starved the sale?

gamefood: that brings me to an idea for a challenge: who has the most hours of sleep during whole insomnia sale UNLESS passing a game??? (without free games)

>>> 4 and a half :D
I think around 12-15 hours of sleep. I missed the 1st round when it started and only caught the tail end of that. i guess I was lucky to get a decent good uninterrupted blocks of sleep in the beginning.

Since then however sleeping was erratic till my last most wanted game which was Don't Starve. I'm still gonna stick around because there is still 1 or 2 good cheapy games I can get that I don't have till this thing is over ^_^

People keep asking that.

It's just been Don't Starve, Shadow Man, and now Retro City Rampage.

Yes, incredible but true. Be grateful you slept through it.

Oh that is really interesting, so it was a good decision to get some sleep after getting Don't starve... so lets see if there will be anything interesting to spend my last gaming funds for this month on.

Don't Starve $4.99
Shadow Man $2.39
AquaNox 2: Revelation FREE
Retro City Rampage $3.74

Kaitu: Here's my proposal for the next sale:

~120 games
~Four rounds
~Each round is 18 hours (period, no exceptions)
~Each game goes up and has 9 minutes to sell the allotment
~If a game sells quicker then the extra time is carried over to the next game and so on.
~If a game runs out of time then the surplus copies are added to the next round.
~Freebies fill in small slots
~Freebie shows up for 5 seconds, no exception
~Once the time has passed, winners of the freebies are notified
~Anyone who entered and didn't get picked gets another entry in the next one they enter
~Once you win one, your entries are reset

So, here's what would happen. Sale starts, first game is NWN2, 1000 copies. Sells out in 4 minutes. Next is SS2, 900 copies. has 13 minutes (original 9+NWN2's extra 4). IT sells out in 6 minutes. JK2 is next, 5 copies. Timer is only for 15 minutes and, when only a single copy sells, the other four are added to round two's allotment and the next game is back to the original 9 minute window.

As for freebies, RCR shows up, 50 copies, the 5 second timer ticks down. 200 people click on it. 50 people are chosen at random and get a "Congratulations" e-mail, other 150 each will get an extra "entry" in the next freebie. Next freebie is Divinity, 40 copies. The same 200 people from before enter. Now the ones who didn't win before are twice as likely as those that did to win.

What do you guys think?

P.S. Only reason I think the extra copies should be carried over is to make sure the title not selling out wasn't some fluke and to make sure people can get what they want.
While I applaud your ideas, I think it would be a mistake to change the parameters too much. The dynamics at work in this sale are pretty good.

--Not knowing the next sale builds anticipation.
--Having a countdown (copies remaining) also builds anticipation.
--Having a shrinking bar lends momentum, and also increases the pressure to buy when it is moving quickly.
--Having a limited number of copies greatly enhances excitement for a title and spurs impulse buying.
--Slow-moving titles give time for rest and community interaction (forum posting, gift giving, et cetera).

I think it would be best to keep all of those things in place. One tweak that might be a good idea, however, is the max limit on how long any one title is for sale. You want it to be long enough for people to take a break, but not so long that it kills the progress of the sale. Four hours might be a good maximum. And, to spur excitement after the lull, you might throw in a countdown timer just before it turns over. Three to five minutes might be good for the timer.

Yes, I picked the right time to go to sleep! :D

But I'm really sorry for you poor schmucks. But at least I won my bet that Shadowman (aka Jack Keane 5) will kill the sale completely. How many copies did they sell this time around?
And how long has Keane City Rampage been up?

Okay.. I have to throw in the towel for tonight.

Dear GOG staff, please wait until after 10am Pacific Time to put Planescape up. It's the only one I'm still waiting for :P

To all of my fellow GOG'ers.. have a good morning/day/night. See you on the flipside :)

nijuu: Nice ideas. One problem. GOG has a global audience. Promo has to cater to it. Aside from that i like the ideas you put up :)
That's why there would be an 18 hour time frame. allows everything to "cycle" fairly evenly across the globe.

The impression that I've got is that ToEE is appreciated most by those D&D fans that believe that its combat is the best execution of the rule set out of all of the D&D games, but that's about all it has going for it.
Man, this thread got empty...time to open up one of the new games I got from this sale.

System Shock 2 or Planescape Torment. Any votes?
