Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

SpiderFighter: You mean this? =D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSfOlusgR1s

This is such a blast. I remember Munch-Man and TC too. :)

wackyanne: OMG! That is so beautiful! That link actually made me tear up a little bit. Perhaps it's time to go to bed. Especially before I get mad at my parents for getting me a year-old game for my b-day :P
I collected consoles and games, and even though we had every system up to and including the PSX and N64 (when my kids were younger, those were the next-gen systems), the one they always played with the most was the Atari 2600. :)

They also loved my old 8-track player, for some reason.

Sweet dreams. :)

cpucrust: Nearly 10% done on RCR. Faster than I thought. If I can wait JUST ONE MORE title...
avatar
stan423321: I'm afraid it doesn't work like this. For each title, there are some people that genuinely wanted it and the sale is just a catalyst. Some of these people were watching over the frontpage, some called by others, but they were waiting for that title. These people strike first, and do it fast. In case of System Shock 2 or Neverwinter NIghts, their number got fairly close to number of copies or beyond it, so the game sold instantly.

I have no idea how many of RCR's early sales were "instant". The more, the longer sale will last.
Yeah, I actually do understand how this sale works. But I'm getting tired and was wishfull thinking -
I am still waiting for "Tropico 3".
Might just have to call it a night soon and pick the title up on another future sale.

I did get NWN Diamond and NWN2 today if GOG insomia round 2 - that was most fortunate and those games will keep me busy for a LONG time.
I'm slowly losing hope.

CarHaru: I just discovered Nightcore with while hopped up on redbull.....

Someone pray for me....
avatar
Fictionvision: I just typed Nightcore into Youtube after reading this.

I..... don't know what to think.
I am so sorry..... or you're welcome.... whatever floats yer boat

Lotus69: Retro City is good, made by a guy I used to work with. Give it a shot, especially if you like video game humor :)
avatar
MGShogun: Is it very difficult game? I read quite few reviews that said that it's pretty difficult.
As long as it is not luck based like 'rouge' type games... I name Sword of the Pit the most unfair game ever.
I've been playing that game on easy every day since I bought it.. i got to lvl 25/40 ... then I died to a "spoiler cut".
I was crushed, but I keep trying. I'd hate to think what normal mode would be like, dying on floor 5/40 ? my luck is awful.
I love and hate rogue type games :D.
GOG should reduce the price of the games if they stay up for too long. RCR is looking to be another Don't Starve.

Limblessk9: I'm slowly losing hope.
Tell me about it... If this turns into another Jack Keane 2, then I'm sleeping.
avatar
Qwertyman: The problem that I personally have with a game like Retro City Rampage is that, while I do enjoy some of the throwback type games that indie developers have been making, RCR is just too much of a throwback. If I want to play something that reminds me that much of the 80's, I'd literally rather just play emulated console games that I was fond of from my childhood. One of my favorites was actually another game with the same abbreviation - River City Ransom.

That's just my personal opinion. It might be a decent game but like I said, if I want to go that far back in graphics, then I'd rather just play some of my old favorites.
Ahahaa! For a while I actually assumed Retro City Rampage was the spiritual successor to the amazing River City Ransom, till' I finally looked up on it.

SpiderFighter: I don't think we had the extended BASIC cartridge. That's amazing that you still have your old tapes! I wish I still had mine. I made a text adventure called "Death in Harding House" with original music...the screen would flash red if you died. Plus a few arcadey-type games.

You need to hook that puppy up and go for a spin!
avatar
Deva: If you still had it, you could put "Death in Harding House" here on GOG! ;)

The Extended BASIC cartridge gave you hardware sprites and lots of other goodies. I wrote a bunch of games as well, in between playing Parsec, the coolest game for the TI... Then I learned C in 1983, and started getting a bit more serious... :)
I envy you. All my tapes are long gone. Brings a tear to my eye. I wish I would have stuck with programming. I switched over to TurboPASCAL to create door games for BBSs, but once the Internet came around in '95 I switched to html and Javascript, then kinda lost touch with the times. Now my creations are mostly UGC for other games.

It's Jack Keane 2 all over again, lets complain about it for a few more days and try and force a meme.

Devoidless: Let's take this time to get to know one another and come to terms with our illness. I'll start.

Hi, my name is Devoidless and I'm a GOG sale addict.
I expect your attendance at the annual GOG Xmas sale :P
We can get some sleep finally ! :D
GoG really looks after us with deals like this :$
So, what came after don't starve?
avatar
undeadcow: It's confusing to see games like Don't Starve and Retro City Rampage just sit there... Retro City Rampage is a funny kinetic game full of personality that's fun to play and easily worth more than $3.74. It hardly seems like something that'd totally halt the momentum.
avatar
SpiderFighter: I think the problem is that these games are on other sites, while the truly retro stuff is pretty much limited to GOG...hence, it moves faster,
It's not that alone. Deus Ex GOTY sold through 1200 copies like water flowing from a tap, despite being readily available elsewhere.

Older classics (the stuff that's recognized as really good) has decades of gamers to appeal to, whereas newer indies struggle to hold their word-of-mouth past a few months. It's not that the newer titles aren't good, or aren't popular. It's just... will we still be talking about them in 15 years time? Cos that's the quality of title they're competing against on GOG.

We've already driven it into the ground.

We literally Jack Keane'd Jack Keane.
