Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

BoxOfSnoo: And a cruel list of "game deals you missed". Maybe that's upcoming.
But who would tell us? Dr. M. and/or the monks?
Great idea and I'd love to participate but living in the USA I'm at least 6 hours behind Europe and I can't stay up all night and miss work just in case a game I want comes along.
I am sure that many in very different time zones have missed the chance and the fun of participating, perhaps for these people some accomodation such as a weekend sale could be made if this promotion is ever repeated.
Whilst I have no doubt that the games will still sell quickly it does seem unusually unfair of G.O.G. to not consider the disadvantage to those of their supporters in other parts of the world who for various reasons due to time zones will not be able to participate.
However, I know you have sort of covered this by calling it an insomnia promo.

akwater: Indeed, and due to insomnia :P I've been up all night. (6am local time current)
Haven't seen you around for months.
Where have you been?

Telika: A lot of nasty ideas are "working", you know, especially in marketing.

Generally speaking, all impulse-buy marketing devices "work". And stink terribly.

:D I know right? "I don't get all of the choices, SO YOUR EVIL!" it's like a todler throwing a tantrum that out at the resturant they don't have the mango juice he likes that mom gets for him.

ashley2ashes: yeah, sorry, you're right. having a sale on not just two or three, but literally 100+ games in the catalogue, that a *lot* of people won't be able to take part in due to a punishing time window during the school/work day, is totally not crap.

almabrds: Not a good situation for you. But doesn't mean the promo sucks.
This focus on "you" and accusation of "self-entitlement" quite hints at a difference of perspective (and at your own implicit "i"). We're not nagging about ourselves (we're online right now, if we can nag we can grab). If you can't concieve a less self-centered perspective, indeed, you'll miss the more general point a bit.

No no no no no no no no no no no no!! I simply don't have time for this today - making me choose between this and the things I should do is cruel and unusual punishment.. =/

Very nice and creative promo though; I'd think it'll promote GOG more/better than regular sales as the buyers have to be active - or lucky - both of wich (usually) make the buyer appreciate the purchase more.

One thing, though; you're not told if you already have the game on the gamecard page. For someone with such a terrible memory as I have, that may lead to either buying games you already have, or - worse - not buying games you don't have..

Coelocanth: What's on your wishlist? You never know; maybe someone could pick one or two of them up for you.
awe thanks thats sweet, but i dont want free games. i'm just saying its kind of a raw deal to lots of people. i think even giving some advanced warning that this type of sale will be coming up would have been really nice on GoGs part so that we could have maybe even brought our cc's to classes or work etc with us, yknow :\ hopefully they can think of something like that next time. maybe they did and i didnt see it, thats possible also.
Great promotion, thanks!

TurnipSlayerr: While we can't run out of stock in the traditional sense, there are limits to how much a partner may be willing to discount a game as, understandably, they don't wish to devalue their game. However by offering only limited numbers of copies we are able to offer higher discounts than we would be able to otherwise. So the limitation is not completely arbitrary! :)

jazmyselfandi: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!! I really hope you guys do know and see there are a lot of people who aren't bitching but love this sale :3
Always nice to hear! Enjoy! :)

If you already own the game, you get the "This is a gift order" check box with a tick in it and grayed out. ;)

No interest in this promo whatsoever. Given the scarcity, I hope the people who get the discounted or free games are the ones who will play them. Seems a waste that someone would buy one of a limited number of games only to let it sit in his or her backlog...
Well, the 400 copies of Don't Starve are certainly taking longer to disappear than the 500 copies of System Shock 2.

Possibly because everyone's expecting it to pop up in some bundle soon (probably the next numbered Humble Indie Bundle).

Does anyone know whether the GOG version of Sacred Gold is any more compatible to Win8 64-bit than the Steam version, or are they one and the same? The Steam version required me to change compatibility settings to run at all and now it still runs very poorly. Also, do you think the savegames of the Steam version would work with the GOG version?

EDIT: Hm, this thread suggests the GOG version has the same issues, so I think I'll pass. Nvm.

No worries, but if you feel like PMing me a couple game titles you want. I'll keep a look out for them. I can't stay glued to the computer all day, but I'll be in and out of the house for most of the day and able to check fairly regularly.

For what it's worth I can see why people have complaints but it's pretty much inevitable that the games will go on sale again (if not on GOG, then elsewhere). I used to be a bit perturbed with sales like this but I've seen so many games I missed on sale go back on sale again later on that it just doesn't bother me now. (I have such a massive back log of unplayed games that I don't really need to buy more anyway).

Where have you been?
Here and there, mostly been offline though. I've been working 7 days on and 7 off. So my off week has been camping, fishing, and all that good outdoorsy stuff.

How's everything going?
