Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Hey you said that you will be donating 1000 dollars to the developers
Baldurs Gate was like watching shooting star - it was there, you blink, and it was gone.
Omerta, on the other hand is just... just embarrassing. I hope this will teach some people something...

xizar: All this does is manufacture artificial scarcity, which is something that doesn't exist for *any* of the products they offer for sale.

timppu: I think e.g. those Humble Bundles that won't most probably be repeated (e.g. the Origin HB bundle) are trying to mimic similar artificial scarcity, as in "If you don't buy this bundle now, you might never see them this cheap ever anymore.".

But this is taking it even further, giving you even less time to decide. Even though I am not going to participate in this sale, I must say I got a laugh how GOG itself is making a parody of this whole articial scarcity thing in their opening message. :)

And wow, this many messages in five hours for this one thread? Did I miss some big flamewar? :)
I get what you're saying, but many of the Humblebundle sales are of games now available through other distribution platforms (as opposed to solely through their site as was the case in days of yore). Now there being a humble bundle just means it's likely to be less expensive than if you waited for a Steam sale.

At least Steam has frequent and repeated sales of the same item. (though not for all titles. I've only seen Jade Empire on sale *once* ever.) Also, with both Wolfire and Valve, they offer unlimited quantities and a much longer decision window. Scarcity is time-based, rather than number based. Time cannot be made digitally infinite (except through a straight price-drop) which is not the case with quantity.

Again, I say this is a bad showing by GOG. (Their first in my recollection.)

...if they promise not to make more DLCs? :P

Paul31286: Omerta is on sale every few weeks for 5$. Why would anyone buy this for 8$?
Not on GoG.
It was in a GoG 's bundle sale though. Maybe you mean that.
Thanks to everyone who's taking one for the team and buying Omerta!

Nope because they did such a great job on Omerta

Wargame too took its sweet time.
Why are all the posts bitching and moaning about the sale from Americans?
I can understand the frustration - I feel the same way, to an extent. . It's (in a very strange way) almost a competition when a free game comes up, and ultimately, nobody likes to lose. Still, it's not like anyone is out of pocket, you didn't lose anything & nothing was taken from you. All that happened is that you (and I) simply didn't get something for free. So smile and move on.

On an unrelated note: Reflecting on the popularity of this event and the recent charitable promotion GOG has had - I wonder if it's worth combining the two?

This kind of an event, but with x% of proceeds going to charity?
Just a thought!

jamotide: No, customer oriented means providing good DRM free service. It does not mean not trying to make as many sales as possible.
avatar
roninnogitsune: That's only part of it. There's things like respecting the customer, and this show no respect at all, you're expected to wait for a sale that you want and then you have little to no time to make an informed decision because the deal will end soon. I found this sale more stressful than any sale I've ever done. There's many better options that have respect for customers. I use GoG because I thought they respected me, but this is a bad sign that they don't.
I would argue that this sale is proof that GOG does respect its customers.

jamotide: So respect for you is not offering sales? Then just buy the freakin games for the regular price, what's the problem? Many here enjoy this sort of competition very much
You're doing a False Dichotomy. I'm not saying that all sales are bad, just this crap. They could offer a normal sale like they id in the past or what steam does. You know Sales that don't expect you to keep an eye on the page for hours on end and that you can check from time to time and don't have to worry bout "supplies" running out when they're digital. If they have a limit to the price then go to the pirce, don't force people to have to keep a screen in the corner of their eye and force their hand if they want a deal.

You can have sales and respect your customers, this does not respect the customer.
Omerta sale!

*sound of crickets*

I guess too many bad Black Friday experiences?
