Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

amok: Gog had this sale for 2 days, with 102 games on various discounts (80%-50%). For the sake of the customer - what would have been the difference in having all those sales in the 'normal' type of sale?

Doing as they have done has been very successful for gog, it brought a lot PR and they flogged a lot of games. Fine for them, but it has taken in use of some tactics which I do not like, and which are not in the best interest for the buyer. They neither get a deeper discount than they do in a normal sale (80% - 50% is normal for sales now), nor the option to brows and shop the games at their leisure. Do it was a good move for gog, but I really do not like those types of pressuring sales tactics. (You may not think so, but the counter on the front page do make it so)

(not to mention they may have been able to flog some more copies of less popular games this way, than they would have in a normal sale... I don't know... maybe the digital warehouse needed some Christmas cleaning?)

GabiMoro: I find the discounts to be higher than usual. GOG usualy have 50, 60, 66 and 70% discounts. Rarely they have 75% discounts and very, very rarely 80%.

For ex. I've never seen Heroes of MIght and Magic 3 discounted by 75%.
There are other DD stores out there Gog are competing with. Not that unusual with those kind of discounts,
Divine Divinity for $1.50? Don't mind if I do.

nijuu: holyshit. is this getting close to Eador and JK2 status?
Its only been 3 hours
Off to work now. Dreading what I am going to miss, but eh, that is all part of the game. Good luck fellow GOGers - will check back in when I get home, in say 12 hours.

jackster79: Not sure if this is just nostalgia or just me having become too cynical, but NES and SNES games, when you got a good one, each was like a Christmas present. It was hard to go wrong with many of them, especially those made in-house at Nintendo. Nowadays, I just feel like "Eh... another system, another game" and it just does not get me as excited as it used to.

I remember getting Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (really 4 and 6 respectively) for different birthdays, and my reactions to them. 2 was along the lines of "What's this?" while 3 was "WHAT"S THIS!?!? OMG - DID YOU GUYS READ MY MIND!?!" Have yet to experience a repeat of 3's reaction for any game since.
We are getting old, have all seen, all experienced, all things played.

Briareos262: heh, had to take a quicke nap, my whole body is still tired of waiting for the good sales....mostly just Don't Starve ATM.

Anywho yeah my first system was Atari, it was great at the time. However the NES just blew it out of the water after it came out I remember after the Atari video game crash age. I too had sadly sold my NES a few years later after it was bought. Luckily I rebought again right before there were gonna move on to SNES. OMG SNES was like a renaissance again for the videogame era. great times great times =)

Oh yeah the Neo Geo that was insane I remember drooling over that console wanting to get it in my younger days, however the home console and the carts were uber expansive. System was like $500-600 and carts ranged from $150-200+ at the time. !t was way too rich for me and still never gotten around to getting one. Even the Neo Geo Pocket I missed too =( which I recall was alot cheaper and games too.

yeah I'm right there too. it's too easy to be skeptical and cynical after many years of gaming. However there are some really good gems out there once in awhile that make me remember the excitement of some of the great games of my youth ^_^

Yes, I know, but do you agree with me that this time the discounts were bigger compared with previous GOG discounts?
Ha, this makes me so happy - I was even longer out of the loop than I planned because I missed a bus, yet I didn't miss a thing here. Thank you, Thunderscape, for holding the line!! :D

Those who've been watching Thunderscape for the last hours have my sympathies, I feel for you guys!

Thanks. Don't forget holiday sales around the corner so ya still got a chance if you missed something on this sale.

I too brought up the discussion that the sales were very comparable if not better than the holiday sales. It's been a good win win situation for them I think and brought tons of new people over in the process too ^_^

I only joined GOG this summer, so I've never seen a holiday sale. Can you tell me what types of discounts have they offered in the past years?

No, gog have had 80% off on games before also.

And it may not have had 80% on exactly the same games, but that changes from sale to sale anyway. Some sales are more discounts in on sale, some on others, and there is always a first time a game gets a highest discount. This sale is no different than others in that regard. I also do believe that it was in this sale SS 2 had it's highest discount for the first time? does not change my point at all.

Anyway, discussion whether it was a high or low discount really have nothing to do about what I was complaining about. It was a good sale in terms of discounts, yes, but a bad sale in terms of execution. I was talking about how the sale was done, not about the % discount of the sale. I was objecting to the pressuring tactics and the white lies on the front page. that do not change whether it was 5% or 95% discount.
Hey guys what's your opinion about the game 'Don't' Starve' ?
I don't know if I should get it or not

I think it was 50% percent off on almost entire catalog druing winter holiday sale. Also some 1 day bundles of nice discounts of 66 or 75% off selection of games.
This is insane, I bought 11 games between insomnia and weekend promos. The last I add Nox and Stronghold HD (with weekend promo). And now I'm waiting 2 more (Thief 1 & 2). At least I gain 3 free games.
