Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Limblessk9: Do you think that the Baldur's Gates, Planescape, and Icewind Dale will go on sale again? I really want them but had stupid work all day.
avatar
Knofbath: All three of those are in the queue, once we beat Eador.
Thanks. I hope I catch them.
Shooting for Space Colony HD and HoMM3 as a maybe.

Though I'm really close to saying screw it I can get it during another sale.
Just an FYI for Win 7/8 users: https://ontopreplica.codeplex.com/

I use this all the time to keep an eye on stuff like soccer games while I'm working in another program. It comes in handy for all sorts of situations, including reading a book and doing other work while keeping an eye on the GOG sale progress. This whole misbegotten event is probably almost over, but OnTopReplica is still a great little tool to know about.

Chocobostew: Eador = Adore

Only anagram I could think of.

And one that is as far from fitting as possible right now.
phonetically, how about "odear" ?

And here I thought Jack Keane was supposed to be the final boss.

Stoltverd: Actually it's a pretty cleaver model!
Temporary sales make you stay looking, getting exposed at many games and deals with huge discounts, making you buy other games you didn't even thought to buy. It makes every person compulsive buyer wake up "Omg such a huge discount! maybe it wont come again! I should buy it now when i have a chance!". And making it such a short timed sale (lol ok only sometimes) it makes sure you don't think too much about it and discover you really don't want it but only being compulsive. just think about the money they have made today and the money they make usually. This model is not absurd IT'S GENIUS!

Supereor: Yeah, it's a model that's good for the them, but not for us. Like always-online DRM or shoehorned DLCs.

I really do feel happy for the people that scored some cheap games, but that's heavily overshadowed by poor souls like Bovrillor to get their desired game, having pain and lack of sleep, as well as questioning their own sanity. This "Insomnia" sale really lives up to its name.

I want to say this is better than a normal sale, I really do. But all the frustration that went into this is too much. Just like how I was almost sure I'd get to play some Nexus for free today, but my hopes were immediately shot down, as always. This worked as a marketing tactic, but this is good for some, bad for others. Whereas I'd say a good old normal sale is good for everyone, but I guess GOG just had to try something new, even if it was at the expense of their customers' joy and well-being.
A well-reasoned post. Kudos, sir.

I appreciate it's good for GoG and I fully support their DRM-Free Revolution. I just hope they rethink this particular sale format as it's pretty demoralising for some of us.

The time hasn't been a total waste I guess. I've played a good chunk of Metro (Which is awesome BTW, horror fans should totally support the poor folks at 4A games who work in what can only be described as a hovel), won some food for the 'Cats Protection League' and chatted with some fellow Terry Pratchett fans....

Captain_Picard: Space, the final graveyard, these are the voyagers of the S.S. Insomnia.
Cpt. Jack Keane
Engineer, LaForge Eador
Weapons, Riker Triad
May luck allow them to live through their journey to save the Federation
Vote for Cpt. Keane sacrifice to giant space spiders
I'm heading off for the night... someone buy me a copy of La Mulana while I sleep.
Aaand i see we have another timeless gem, master of the broken sale.. Deja vu..
Anyone counting the time it takes Eador to sell out?

Jack Keane 2 made a token appearance after his earlier embarassment. The last hurdle is going to be Omerta...

No, he's the really stupidly difficult boss that you get about 15 minutes in that takes hours to defeat and then you realise that the actual game is shorter than that one boss
avatar
Bovrillor: A little micro-management would go a long way though. The GoG staff must be able to see Eador isn't selling. Why not rotate it out halfway
avatar
stylez82: But it is selling. Just slowly. You're essentially asking them to force lost sales of the product, despite the fact they have 99.999999% probability of selling every 'copy' of said product.

To put it in perspective, if someone walks up to you and says "I will give you 500 of this product. I guarantee it will sell, but I cannot guarantee how fast or how slow you will be able to sell it. You will make $10 for each one you sell.", then offers you two choices:
- You only have 30 minutes to do so, after that, you eat the cost of any remaining product.
- You can take as long as you want to sell all 500, but be warned, it could take you 12 hours to do so.

Would you really choose the half hour route?
I never suggested they 'eat the cost' of the remaining product. When I said 'rotate it out', I meant take Eador off-sale for a few hours and put the remaining quantity back up in 12 hours so people on the other side of the world can 'enjoy' the offer.

2 hours, 40 minutes and counting. 450 copies.
