phaolo: Bandcamp needs ratings.. how the hell can one find the best artists among thousands of them?

(it would also need classics, but that's another impossible wish..)
Bandcamp isn't about finding the most popular stuff. It's about finding new stuff and giving bands the chance to promote themselves and sell their records without a label (or just present their music to the public). A rating would be a very bad idea in my eyes, becuase in the end only the already well-known / mainstream bands would stay visible.

If you absolutely need something like that, you can choose a tag and see the best-selling albums in that category.

And to get back on topic: Church of Mental Enlightment is an awesome blues-rock / proto-metal band from my town. :)

Seems nice, I liked Crooked Dreams among the preview songs.

Oh, I didn't see your reply.

I don't understand very much such reasoning:
- who doesn't already believe in ratings or likes trying new things.. will simply ignore the votes in any case.
- normal users, instead.. will just feel lost and give up. At best, they'll search for known\popular names!
I don't see a great advantage..

The Night in the Woods OST is finally there. And Alec Holowka wasn't joking when he said it will have more than 100 tracks. o_O

80's Synth and (prog-psy-) Trance are usually my favorites, but I find the eclectic music by AJ Hickling to be... well, I have no words, honestly... He's traveling the world to sample sounds and music styles, and then mixes them together.

Take a look at this two:

2017 was another stellar year for Bandcamp, with double digit growth in every aspect of the business.

Digital album sales were up 16%, tracks 33%, and merch 36%. Growth in physical sales was led by vinyl (up 54%), CDs (up 18%), and cassettes (up 41%). Revenue from the 3,500 independent labels on Bandcamp grew 73%, and more than 600,000 artists have now sold something through the site.

Our publication, Bandcamp Daily, grew its audience by 84%, and all-time payments to artists through Bandcamp reached $270 million. We launched a new app for artists and labels, added gift cards, improved fan collections, held successful fundraisers for the ACLU and TLC, and we’ll soon mark six straight years as a profitable company that only makes money when artists make a lot more money.

[...]

[...]NPR Music’s Andrew Flanagan wrote:

“Bandcamp serves as an honest-to-goodness, proof-in-the-pudding bulwark against the creep of artistic monoculture fueled by the consolidation of digital life into the hands of a few companies. Maybe the future isn’t a dumpster fire after all.”

This made us laugh of course, but it also accurately captured what drives us to keep building and growing Bandcamp after all these years (we’ll celebrate our 10th anniversary this September, more on that to come).

We want a music platform to exist where the playing field is level, where artists are compensated fairly and transparently, and where fans can both stream and own their music collections. The fact that this simple concept continues to resonate with so many talented artists and hard core fans inspires us every single day, and in 2018 we’ll be working hard to bring it to an even bigger audience. Thank you for another great year!

Love bandcamp but silly question --- how many times can you listen to tracks via the website for a given track before you (apparently) have to pay ?

Not logged in. Trying to play various tracks. After a few goes, comes up with that screen that has breaking heart symbol. Choose no i dont want to pay and it wont let me play same track again (99% of the time). Its not consistent across various tracks though. A few i can repeat play more than a few times...
Bandcamp has the option for the composer to set, whether they want to limit how many "listens" a person gets before asking them to purchase music or not. It's fairly recent, I don't remember the option being there last time I uploaded tracks.

So um... I suppose this is appropriate to post here. Keep in mind I haven't published anything in some time, and I have little interest in doing so again until I get permanent housing (No, an apartment with paper thin walls is NOT permanent housing)

It's been there for (at least) the last 2-3 years or so.

A way around it, though I'd certainly recommend buying the artist's album/track if you're playing it SO much that you're hitting Bandcamp's own gentle coaxing to do so, you can clear out your browser's cookies specific to Bandcamp and it should allow you to play the track(s) until you hit the "just buy it already" notice again.

I haven't been serious about uploading tracks to bandcamp since 2014, so that makes sense.
