Also, if the lack of space is the only issue and actually caused by the ZIP, look up zip bomb. In a somewhat happy scenario, may just be a case of a file designed to fill up the disk and nothing else.

Or if the program being used to extract the file has a security vulnerablility.

Incidentally, apparently Norton/Symantec antivirus products recently had a vulnerability of this sort, which is exacerbated by the fact that, on Windows, the extraction is done in kernel mode. If you are using such a product, make sure to keep it updated, as an antivirus program with a severe vulnerability like that (remote code execution) is worse than none at all.

In the future, you can check questionable files before opening them by dumping them to virustotal.com

That was my thought too. It sure sounds like the same issue.

Look in your Galaxy folder for a multi-GB log file and delete it.

If you are using IDM then check %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\IDM\DwnlData\

There is a folder where IDM stores temporary files.
Due to some kind of bug sometimes it makes .log files too large (around GBs).
Delete if there is any such files in IDM temporary download folder.

Not sure how well that works on installers and archives, considering the file size limit.

And since there was talk of antivirus products, I'm using Emsisoft Anti-Malware paired with Comodo Firewall. After over 10 years of BitDefender but stuck on 2011 since 2012+ were unusable for me with how much they took away user's ability to monitor and control, so for firewall Comodo was the clear choice, installed it and never looked at others, then spent last year testing 10 antivirus products and settled on this one. There were stronger contenders in pretty much each category, but also had dealbreakers, so Emsisoft came out on top overall, and using BitDefender's definitions is an added guarantee for file scans, since at least they are good at that.

+1 To this and if files are too large you can still check if the .url is safe or not, but as a general rule the best antivirus is the computer user itself, so if you thought the site was questionable to begin with it should have set off your alarmbells in the first place and be avoided.

Also remember that the free edition of Malwarebytes only checks for virusses when you manually scan for it.
