I have a little rat problem in my garage so I picked up a Havahart trap. I plan on releasing it in a park nearby. Are there any precautions I should take before, during, and after transport? I'm going to wash my hands afterwards, but is that enough? Is there another type of area I should release it in? I live in the city of Toronto.

It's not that easy is it? A few months back there was a rat in my house and I couldn't even keep up with its speed. Ended up using a sticky trap.

... and on a more serious note, we have a sharp shinned hawk in the neighborhood that takes care of the neighborhood rats for free... well the hawk gets dinner, and we get less rats... win-win

I've seen him with a rat too, just missed the capture...

I've seen him with a rat too, just missed the capture...
My cousin works as an electrician in construction; specifically condos. He told me that the city occasionally releases a bird of prey (can't remember if it was a hawk or a falcon) to take care of pests. I've seen a few around, but more towards downtown Toronto.

I'm not sure they would come this low. I was putting out garbage a minute ago and the rat was hiding under the stairs. It's hard to see, but I heard him scurry out beneath the stairs and I saw him for a moment as he went under the fence. I would've thought I was seeing things if I didn't catch him with his pants down the other day.

I'm glad you got the reference! I'm usually bad with names when it comes to forum titles and I thought the quote was fitting.

from what I read when I first saw it and tentatively identified it as a sharp shinned hawks, they LIKE heavily wooded areas. These guys blow right through maples and white pines in the middle of summer...

jsidhu762: Those are fancy rats. They are bred to be resistant to disease, but that doesn't mean they're invincible when it comes to pathogens though. They are actually harmless. I already have two guinea pigs, so my time and resources are put into those two. If I didn't have them, I would've gotten fancy rats instead. Also, it was hard to find a rattery in my area.

Wild rats are very different. They carry parasites and diseases, and because they live in the wild they're a little more aggresive than their civilized counterparts.
Oh I know, I've killed many wild rats before. Also my sister loves guinea pigs, they are absolute shit machines but they sure are cute.

Kill it. Humanely kill it. Like others have said, if you release it, it is just gonna get into someone else's home and cause damage there. And they do cause lots of damage.
