It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

TerriblePurpose: Yeah, I'm betting you'll be bombarded with ads. Annoying, unskippable ads similar to youtube.
I forget the name, but there is a browser extension for chrome or chrome offshoots/etc that blocks said ads.

StingingVelvet: The vast majority of people just don't care much about "privacy" when it comes to tracking their spending habits or social media likes or whatever else. People aren't ignorant about Google and Amazon doing this stuff, they just don't care. I've mentioned it to my wife several times and she just shrugs and goes back to Facebook. They're already sharing their entire lives on these apps, it makes sense they wouldn't give a crap about that stuff. Hell, even I don't really care much.

People care about privacy when it's about the nude photos on their phone, not when it's about how long they surfed Amazon looking for a new crock pot. The percentage of people who care about Google knowing what they play and when is infinitesimally small. Also they already gave all this power to Valve, Sony and Microsoft anyway.
All good points.

Yeah, but as I wrote above, by streaming they get a lot more than that. They see HOW you play, what you stop to look at, your movement pattern. They can possibly see if you're agitated, sleepy, drunk... From your spending time in certain areas of the game they can infer your tastes. It's not like Steam who can track not much more than when you started and stopped playing. Streaming servers can track the whole game. It's like someone is looking over your shoulder all the time.

Yes but my point stands, the vast majority don't care. I get that this baffles you guys, just like it baffles me that people prefer to subscribe instead of own, but the evidence is all around us about how people feel. Pissing against the wind only ends up making you wet. We're all screwed.

Yes, but what can they DO with that beyond sell you stuff?

Unless they are running some sort of cooperative data sharing thing with the powers that be to control or change you somehow, that is....*tinfoil hat mode activated*

In the hands of developers, the non-evil people who are actually trying to make good games, being able to get this kind of feedback could be an amazing way to improve future games.

But no, it'll just go to the accountants who can scrutinise it for the best place to put product placement, or which bits would be most likely to sell as DLC if they cut them from the main game, or... actually I'm going to stop giving them ideas now.

That doesn't sound at all like a fun way to play games... unless one has an exhibitionist personality, in which case it may well make playing games even more fun for them.

TerriblePurpose: I just checked it out after reading your post. Looking at the 'About Stadia' tab, it shows they currently only have the Stadia Pro subscription available currently for (in Canada) $11.99 a month. Pro includes resolution up to 4K, 60FPS, and 5.1 Surround Sound. You do have to buy games, but there are also free games 'released regularly', and you get Pro-exclusive discounts on 'select game purchases'

Coming next year is Stadia Base which is free and gives you resolution up to 1080p, 60 FPS, and Stereo sound. You must buy games, but don't get access to the free games and no discounts.

A tad ironic that the 'free' games are only available if you're paying for a subscription. Not so free after all...
Neither the Pro sub nor the free Base are actually available to get standalone right now. Currently the only way to use Stadia is to buy the Premium edition which includes 3 months Pro sub, the controller and a Chromecast Ultra (to connect to a TV).

On the chromecast you can only play with the controller right now I think but on PC you can use most common controllers or mouse/keyboard, assuming the game supports it.

Thanks. In noted that Base is due out next year. I wasn't sure about Pro, but looking again, I see it says it's 'Part of Premium', so I missed that aspect.

Setting aside the fact that I'm in no way interested in streaming game clients at all, the more info I get about Stadia, the less impressed I am with their pricing and business model.

AB2012: Gamers are a staggeringly naive bunch if they think it's going to stop at being just "like Netflix for games".
It's actually worse... You pay for the service, then pay full price for the games (some of which have been heavily discounted elsewhere). I could get behind a gamefly like service but this is definitely not that.

ChrisGamer300: My thoughts ? what's there to think about ? Just kill, avoid, nuke the damn thing already before it becomes the end of everything as we know them.
This. Every fucking day, this.

I don't like Skynet, and sure as hell isn't going to allow it into my home.

Yet people lap up this shit like it's free pancakes. People are dumb. I honestly can't make any other conclusion. Not after everything we know about surveillance and awful business practices from both Google and plenty of others.

If you think this is as bad as a possible skynet all I can say is: wot?

toxicTom: The scary part

Knowing that "big brother Google" is watching how you play - would you really play the same way? Sometimes trying sick and crazy stuff? Visiting the Passiflora more often than required for quests?

Thoughts?
Here is newsflash for you. Everything you described already exists and used extensively in online games, especially mobile. In fact the whole pitch for Unity Analitics is that it allowes you to build into your game any checks about the player actions.
This is the direction all of the console makers are heading. To those who follow along, I bid you adieu.

Didn't know it was that bad...
But with locally installed games you do at least have the chance to block them from "phoning home".

Stay off the internet and you have no worries. This has been going on for years and a certain country is trying to invade all your thoughts and then have control over everything you do. You are years behind with this sort of stuff and maybe you should play less and keep a watch on current affairs, while you build a bunker.
