Anyone know what happened to those? They were a pretty big addition to the site some time back, but it seems the releases dried up late 2015. Certainly there's more indie films out there that can be scored... So, whatever happened to the movies tab?

It's still there.

It's still around, cleverly hidden under that "movies" word at the top of the page. They just stopped adding to it after the realization that most filmmakers aren't exactly gung-ho on the whole DRM-free thing.

I think a film was added to some game a while ago (I forget which), but it comes with the game itself as a bonus and isn't listed under the movies tab.

A shame, too. If GOG had managed to expand into "Good Old Movies" (like old swashbuckler or martial arts movies, or westerns), I would be all over that part of the store. But I imagine those would be very hard to get

Videogame documentaries and geeky amateur webmovies have less appeal to me (although I bought a few of them that I enjoyed on youtube and wanted to pay for)

Got hidden by Barefoot Essentials, that's what happened (in my browser). :) Joking aside, I tend to think of it as an experiment gone wrong; It certainly had potential, but I guess things didn't go as well as planned.

See, that's what I was thinking? The old Clint Eastwood westerns would have been perfect fit. Hell, even some awesome indie films like Dead Snow, would have been good.

No. I think GOG introduced movies because of the potential of expanding into MaGOG (Movies and Good Old Games). Note that for this to work the movies can neither be good nor old.

Hence they'll always reject any movies except for those indie ones. Subconciously they know that if they take the good old ones, all they'd be able to change to is something like GOGaM, which is nowhere near as cool.

Maybe they could change it to GOGaSM (Good Old Games and Sexy Movies).

The movies could be old and hated though, in which case it'd become an expression as in "Oh, MaGOG, there you go again, adding stuff no one asked for..." Well, perhaps if they added porn, then GOG's VHS could finally win over Steam's Betamax?

Also, the game didn't come here until 2011, four years after it was originally released (2007) and three years after GOG opened for the public (2008).

I don't know... I don't see them in the movies section.

Also I think most people know about gog thanks to the witcher release... still there are many old classics on gog even without the witcher... while there are no classics in the movies section.

I have 13 of them on my shelf.

A bunch came for free, and several I had to buy as part of a bundle some time ago in order to get the max discount on a game I wanted.

I've never watched a one.

For GOG to release a new movie/series, it'd have to either be made by a company in the CDProjekt Group, or be at least partially funded by them so that they get partial distribution rights, and I doubt that's going to happen. I mostly mentioned the existing works as a joke, but I don't know if the company that made those have exclusive rights to make cinematic works off of the Witcher franchise, or if it's open to whomever has the money to get a license, I also obviously don't know if they're interested in striking a deal to distribute it here, or even if GOG's interested in that thing.
