Metroidvainia style games are some of my favorites.

I'll plus one Valdis Story, while mentioning that it IS combat heavy. And yes, there are missables but generally speaking the harder path gives the most reward. I also really like that the developers took the time to make each playable character have a unique combat style.

Aquaria is an oldie, but interesting one. All underwater with multiple forms for the main character. Also sound/music based abilities/puzzles. There's a simple hack you can do to make all the environment symbols/text legible which I think actually adds to the atmosphere, though others may disagree. Never finished it, but enjoyed what i did play years ago.

Dex is a cyberpunk style game with metroidvania elements. Kinda. Short and enjoyable with different skill builds that will affect gameplay and, most likely, puzzles.

The Mummy Remastered is funnily enough a decent game. Definitely inspired by the GBA Metroid style of games, though it never quite reaches those lofty heights.

You likely have the remastered Dragon's Trap and Monsterboy games already, but I'll mention them as being two fantastic games overall and well worth any metroidvania fans time.

Axiom Verge, though not found on GOG, is one of my all time favorites. More Super Metroid style gameplay than metroidvania, however.

I have the remastered Dragon's Trap, but it feels less metroidvania-ish to me, as there's just a hub and a bunch of areas you explore in linear area. Wonder Boy in Monster World (Sega Genesis Mini) felt a little more metroidvania-ish to me.

I don't have the monster boy game, but I should point out that it does have both race and insta-fail stealth sections. (I've watched speedruns of this.) Plus, again no playable female character (unlike the Dragon's Trap remake), and monster boy also has some music that uses instruments that give me headaches (the lava area being one offender here).

Ah you also have the Genesis mini, nice! Ever get around to play Monster World IV? Though it is another Hub based, linear exploration style game.

Oh and forgot to mention this earlier, but La-Mulana 2 is fantastic (and has a female main) if you enjoy puzzles and metroidvania gameplay. Traps are everywhere, some insta-kill ,but so are save areas. But be prepared to really think outside of the box!

I've played the remake of the first game, and honestly I'm not really looking for an adventure game with metroidvania elements (which I'd argue is a suitable description of that game).

(Haven't tried Monster World IV yet.)
Unepic, Ghost 2.0, and Sundered are my picks. Really loved Sundered. However, if a male protagonist is a complete deal breaker, then good luck. I don't typically pay attention to the genders of the protagonist unless it matters for the story.

dtgreene: Bloodstained is only worth it if someone can answer my question about that game and WINE, a question I have asked multiple times and not received an answer.
After a litle trouble I manage to launch the game in WINE. The trouble had nothing to do with the game or the process to launch itself but crap, I hate when my stuff doesn't work...
Rambling apart, just copied the instalation folder on my Windows install and launch it through WINE on Linux Mint, worked first time. I didn't install through Wine though but shouldn't present any problem, and didn't play more than a few minutes. The game run flawlessly on maximum settings without a hitch. Did not try a controller as well, only keyboard but there is some ProtonDB review where someone said it work.
I don't know if there is any game breaking bug at the middle of the game.
Will try it on the other computer later, wich has Intel HD graphics. Edit: game run fine on Intel HD 620 on minimum settings at 720p but to get a good experience, edit the config file and teak the 3d resolution. 8BitDo controller worked out-of-the-box.

Dark_art_: Did you played Iconoclasts?
avatar
dtgreene: No, but I have watched it, and I actually do have the game in my account.
Iconoclasts have a Linux build and worked flawlessly. Is one of those games that is on my playlist, some time but from the 2 or 3 hours I've played it was fine. More puzzle oriented though.
Since you already own it, give a try.

Aquaria and Dex both have female protagonists. Dex was kind of meh, didn't finish the game. Aquaria was very interesting, and is on sale at the moment...
Actually, check your chat :D
