dtgreene: I like spellcasting mechs, particularly since so often worlds with technology and magic don't allow robot spellcasters, so it's nice when they do. (To count, they must be decent at spellcasting; giving a robot a spellbook in the original SaGa 2 doesn't count.)

(Side note: In the SaGa 2 remake, mechs can use spells decently; you just need to find a special magical circuit board and equip (at least) one to give it a non-zero magic power stat.)

Also, I like ones that are simultaneously wearing multiple suits of armor, or are armed to the teeth with tons of cat claws.

Matewis: Uhm, spellcasting?? I imagine you're talking about actual robots casting spells in jrpg type games, as opposed to a pilot in a mech casting a spell, in which case its just a person casting a spell who happens to be in a mech?

I don't really associate magic with mechs at all, but that's probably just because of my limited exposure to jrpg type games. Then again, I'm nuts about 40K, and in 40K there is something called a machine spirit
Yes, I am referring to the robot casting a spell.

Alternatively, enchanted mechs could work.
Yeah baby!

I got that game during a sale. From what I understand, the story is currently unfinished. Im sort of waiting for the whole campaign to be complete before playing the game.

Around a month ago the game has received a huge update and now it's more smooth in terms of gameplay and also has a better UI and visual design but.. yes... it needs more work and be completed. I've purchased the game early past November on discount for 2 reasons: believe and support an early access mech videogame (Guundamu!) and to use for the first time the new paying method in Argentina (our local currency was added on November 2017)

Matewis: Like most battletech fans I'd imagine I'm also a bigger fan of the 90-100 ton range, but while taking a strong likeing to a few of the smaller ones. In my case, the 55 ton bushwacker

I prefer the 65 to 75 ton range personally though I also like some smaller ones.
My favorite would probably be dieselpunk mechs. These tend to be more like tanks than you typical mechs. Some good examples are Paolo Parente's Dust, or the PS2 game Ring of Red. Ring of Red has one of my favorite intro scenes ever. They took footage from WWII, and added mechs into it.
Piloted by robots for extra bizarroness.

Actually, I'm with Breja here (wouldn't have expected that :P), not really a fan.
Like the ones in the Command & Conquer Tiberium sub-series, Battlefield 2142, and MechWarrior.

Matewis: By the way, for anyone with some anime knowledge, are there any animes based around mechs(/mecha?) that don't follow the, what I perceive as usual nimble and athletic style? The only one I know about is Blue Gender, and even though later on in the series the mecha become quite athletic for a skilled pilot, it's not at the expensive of a clear sense of weight and momentum.
What about Sakura Wars? I can't say that I am very familiar with franchise, but I saw a couple of OVAs and mechs there are quite bluky.

Also, did you know that many mechs in Battletech have their design sto... I mean based on mechs from Robotech?
BattleTech style for me. I have always liked bulky "chicken-walker" designs like the Marauder, Timber Wolf, Dire Wolf and their respective variants.

Matewis: Massive a la pacific rim style, nimble and athletic a la 'typical' anime style, slow and lumbering a la battletech style,
something else or inbetween?
If I think how I played Mechwarrior 2, it depended on the mission. IF I could choose only one type, then a faster nimbler one so that I can more easily dodge enemy shots, and equipped with some kind of energy weapons so that I have unlimited ammo.

While a slower and stronger mech was preferable in many missions, on some missions speed was of essence when you were e.g. trying to catch incoming enemies from different directions when they were hunting the cargo ships or whatever that you were supposed to be protecting.

EDIT: If this question was more about "Do you prefer Japanese mechs which are apparently made out of thin paper as they can do piruettes and somersaults in the air and move without inertia, or western mechs which are more like tanks on two legs?", then I prefer the western mechs, like in the Mechwarrior games.

Put me in the UC Gundam and Patlabor camp. I usually don't particularly like bulky mecha, aside from the Big O.
Hmm. The more I consider it, I think I prefer the western walking types, but there comes a sensible cutoff. Staggeringly tall mechs like the Atlas are just a bit silly, as are the various behemoth walkers of Star Wars.
