I like spellcasting mechs, particularly since so often worlds with technology and magic don't allow robot spellcasters, so it's nice when they do. (To count, they must be decent at spellcasting; giving a robot a spellbook in the original SaGa 2 doesn't count.)

(Side note: In the SaGa 2 remake, mechs can use spells decently; you just need to find a special magical circuit board and equip (at least) one to give it a non-zero magic power stat.)

Also, I like ones that are simultaneously wearing multiple suits of armor, or are armed to the teeth with tons of cat claws.

Uhm, spellcasting?? I imagine you're talking about actual robots casting spells in jrpg type games, as opposed to a pilot in a mech casting a spell, in which case its just a person casting a spell who happens to be in a mech?

I don't really associate magic with mechs at all, but that's probably just because of my limited exposure to jrpg type games. Then again, I'm nuts about 40K, and in 40K there is something called a machine spirit

Well I'll agree that it's perhaps too much, but I wont agree that that is a bad thing :)

Tabletop BattleTech is for stat nerds. If you like really crunchy stats and really simple tactics, it's great fun. But you need to like to spend half your playtime preparing to play, because between loading out your 'Mechs and tallying all the damage during fights, you spend a whole lot of time not rolling dice or maneuvering your "armies."

I think pretty much all 'Mechs are cool, if they're part of an internally-consistent lore. Ripley's power loader? Fit perfectly in the tech of the movie, looked badass, got the job done. Warhammer 40k and BattleTech (especially post-3055)? Over the top and crazy, but also awesome; and they work really well for miniatures and board game settings since they're easily distinguished. Star Wars robots, like AT-*Ts and speeder bikes and starships? Obviously great stuff, iconic. Star Trek robots and ships? Almost always good fits in the story universe. Even the giant Pacific Rim Jaegers were just exactly right to counterbalance the various Kaijus.

Basically, any big robot can be just fine in a setting as long as the setting is good. The fundamental flaws in making bog robots do big robot stuff are pretty nearly consistent in every iteration, so suspension of disbelief is very easy. Just accept that there's enough power - which there could never be - to run the thing, and that it's made of materials - which cannot exist - that will endure the shear stresses of movement and combat and the impulses of getting hit by high-energy weapons. Easy peasy. Disbelief suspended, now let mortal combat begin.

If you like Blue Gender you should check out Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Its by the same guy, and has similar-ish style mechs. Heavy Gear was inspired by VOTOMS.

If it's more exoskeleton, I prefer the more organic Japanese style. If we're talking 100m high killer machines, the more clunky, the better.

I'm definitely much more of a fan of the the western big and stompy variety that actually looks like a war machine versus the japanese's standard big anthropomorphic robot (often complimented with ridiculous weapons such as giant swords and other nonsense).
