I have not played Fallout 3 in a long, long, LONG time. But I remember some aspects. I remember how much it sucked as a shooter that's for sure. Shooting guns just felt bad. And I found the enviornments to be rather unmemorable.

And my recent playing of Fallout 1 and 2 showed how bad Fallout 3 was in narrative and Role Playing aspects.

So back to New Vegas which I have never played at all. Like KOTOR 2 before it does it have the Obsidian touch? Better story, characters, RPG mechanics?

Is it more open world like then Fallout 3? I am going to try it on PC so how is the port? Is this game buggy?
It has all the Obsidian hallmarks, good writing and fun characters.
And tons of bugs.
It's definitely my favorite though.
Mechanically it's not that different from FO3 though, at least not that I remember.

I have it for the 360 but its 10x better then Fallout 3. It's brighter so its less moody and depressing, huge enviroments, better story.
I loved Fallout 3, just wandering the map and finding little places tucked away.
New Vegas felt more constricted to me. People say that the characters and writing is better but I never noticed.
Also the Strip itself sucks big time. I think it was held back by the game being made for X360 and PS3.

Oh yeah, it is buggy as hell.

That I agree with it was too small but there are tons of places that make up for it IMO.

Maybe my opinion doesn't count since I actually enjoyed Fallout 3, but Fallout New Vegas is a better game in every way.

Here's the answer to your points.
- Fallout New Vegas WAS buggy, but after six years and a combination of both official and fan-made patches, it's pretty stable (the pcgamingwiki page will definitely help).
- It does have the Obsidian touch, but thankfully, it's not as bad as KOTOR2 (except for a DLC where it got more annoying). It's the right balance between the exploration factor of Fallout 3 and the role-playing aspect of Fallout 1 and 2.
- In theory, it's open-world like Fallout 3, but the beginning railroads you a bit (by putting strong monsters where you're not supposed to), but once you get pass the first 10 levels, you'll have no problem going off the beaten path.

In other worlds, I highly recommend New Vegas. It brought back what Fallout 3 lacked while keeping it's good parts (yeah, I actually liked exploring cities in ruins and as much as I like the first two Fallouts, I thought they were a bit lacking in the exploration department (the time limit doesn't help).

That's funny then, because I have the PS3 version... and it is as buggy as hell. Access problems with large save files, characters clipping through walls and tons of graphics glitches. But I did notice no self-propelled Deathclaws like the ones from the PC version of Fallout 3, the ones that would blast off into outer space when you shot them. No, the PS3 version has all the bad bugs, not the funny ones.
Just to reassure everyone out there: New Vegas was as buggy as everyone says, but not any more.
I have played it last year on my Windows 7 PC, the game is perfectly playable with no real hassles and the bugs are very few and almost not noticeable (just two crashes in tens and tens of hours and one "looping" mission in the whole game)... except one: if you wear a faction -no matter which- armor, it may happen that somehow that same faction will suddenly turn hostile to you without reason, destroying all your hard work in a hearthbeat (it happened to me with an NCR ranger suit. Only once, sure, but that was already too much). So... don't wear them on principle. They are not needed and they are pretty weak, anyway.

EDIT: The comment above mine just made me remember this: I'm talking about the PC version. On the consoles, it is still a terrible mess; a friend of mine has never been able to play it decently on his PS3.

The map for NV is larger than the one for 3, but I think the constricted feeling comes from the rather large mountain range can't cross.

I enjoyed FO3, but the writing in many areas was pretty bad. The whole world felt fake. You had seemingly infinite numbers of raiders whose sole purpose in life is to torture, rob and murder people. It just didn't make any sense. The equivalent to the raiders in NV at least has some purpose.

No it's just held back by the engine itself, that version of the Gamebryo engine is slightly better than the one used in FO3 but it still has huge memory issues.

And yes the PC version is perfectly playable, but not every bug causes the game to crash.
I don't think they ever really fixed that one ant hill bug for example.
And there are several more I encountered using the latest patch.
New Vegas has a dash more colour that brings out the beauty of the Majave desert. It was developed by members of the team that created Fallout 1 & 2, and as such is tied to those games through its characters and factions. Its theme is one of rebuilding society and the various factions have very different ideas on how to go about that. More than ever it gives off a frontier vibe, prompting me to don a Wild West outfit and become a techno cowboy. Aw yeah.

For some reason I keep getting told this has good characters and a better story. But all I remember is endless glitches, bad dialogue, boring quests and so much sand! The whole thing lacked the personality of Fallout 3. Improved the gun play but that is about it.

Playable it is, but it nothing more than another add to Fallout 3. A badly made one.

For many young snowflakes Obsidian might as well be their mother. They're video game brothers raised by different mothers. I don't WTF that means.
