I was just downloding a game through Galaxy just now, and I noticed that the download was maxing out at 3.3 Mb/s. So I came to the site to see if downloading the Backup Installer was any faster. Which it was. I was getting a solid 21 Mb/s.

Why is downloading through so much slower?

First, add Galaxy client to your anti-virus/firewall whitelist, as they might be interfering with the connection. Also, I'd recommend checking if Bandwidth Limit is enabled in your Galaxy settings. (Open Galaxy> GOG Icon on the top left corner> Settings> Downloads Bandwidth limit)

If none of these helps, please contact support, they'll try to help :)
I get 3.5 Mb/s max speed even without Galaxy. Tested my bandwidth and 16 Mb/s should be possible. Well, I´ll write to support tomorrow.

Thanks. None of the stuff that you suggested worked, I'm still getting 3.3 Mb/s, but now it's also spiking to around 6.4 Mb/s.

I'll contact support when I have the time. Thanks again.

I'm downloading my first GOG game (Witcher 3, using the GOG 2.0 client) and the speed is only 0.7 MB/s, with rare spikes around 3.0MB/s. Is this typical in the US (Nevada)? If so, I may have to seriously reconsider my Cyberpunk preorder

My ISP speed is 50 Mb/s (about 6.25 MB/s). I've tried opening up my firewall in both windows 10 defender and my router. I get max speed from other clients like Steam and Uplay.

You might want to consider downloading directly from your web browser, rather than via galaxy (the gog client), and compare rates. I get speeds upwards of 25MB/s (my ISP speed is 250-300Mb/s) through the browser (I am in NC, USA). I don't use galaxy, so I can't comment on it.

I looked into that. The only option I saw on the site was to download via GOG client.

Also, an update: after about 3 hours of downloading, and 1 hour after changing firewall settings, the speed increased to fluctuating between 3.0 MB/s to 5.0 MB/s

There should be a menu option under the Galaxy download offline back up game installers and that is where those are.

On your collection page for the game in question, look for a almost hidden button obfusely named offline backup installers. Click on that and you will see a list of game files on the left and other optional files such as manual on the right. Download fully all the files on the left (you only need the patches if you downloaded an earlier version).

See Nightcraw1er's suggestion right above my post.

The way they design this site for non-Galaxy users you could almost call Defective by Design.

Yup GOG Galaxy is clearly force throttling downloads.

I get over 100 MB/s download speed avg in Steam, but barely 25 MB/s on GOG Galaxy
